Appleby House in Epsom, Surrey, is an 'Outstanding'-rated (April 2019), award-winning care home offering an innovative approach to older people's care, including dementia care.

Residents are supported to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life, with opportunities to enjoy hobbies and discover new interests. Art sessions have transformed the home and led to inspirational outcomes for residents – Appleby House even has its own art gallery and studio now.

The team strives to enhance the home in every way for residents. The traditional hair salon now has a nail bar and barber area, and an ice cream parlour was added to improve residents’ nutrition. Residents are encouraged to express their views and wishes, and individuality is celebrated.

Appleby is excellent in every way possible. The care given to residents is outstanding, with every aspect of their care having been considered and catered for.
The staff are professional, approachable, friendly and supportive with both residents and their wider families. Everyone is treated with kindness
and compassion. You can see how effectively the staff work as a team, and how supportive they are of each other and of the ethos that makes Appleby a very well-managed and joyful environment.
The entertainment team are creative, imaginative, fun and full of energy. They frequently run activities that involve the local community and the families of residents, and this makes very happy new experiences and memories for all involved, which is so important.

I am amazed at how quickly my father has settled into this residential home. I can see the wonderful support and care he is given. He feels safe in his environment with the staff and that is very heart-warming and comforting for me to see.
What has amazed me the most are the fantastic activities he
has been taking part in that are so well thought out and planned. He is doing more now then he has ever done!

I had been looking after my wife for five years and after a period in hospital, I realised that this was no longer possible and I had a mental breakdown. Then, the Surrey County Council found a place for her at Appleby House. The feeling we both got when we first visited Appleby, was one of open arms
and great warmth. I suddenly realised that the staff would not only look well after my wife but that I would be set free at the same time, giving me a new life.
I have visited my wife daily for many months and at different times and therefore have a good insight into how my wife and other residents are treated. I have only the greatest admiration and respect for how Appleby House is run and how the staff truly cares for their charges. I have really nothing but praise. My wife has recovered her appetite, looks well and is always having fun with visitors and staff. She seems younger than some years ago and I love seeing her so happy every time I am with her.

My 96-year-old mother-in-law is very happy living at Appleby House. The staff are wonderful and caring and look after their charges as if they were their own family. Since she’s lived there, we have every confidence that she is very well cared for and all the stress of worrying about her living on her
own has gone. She loves the food and the fact that all her meals are served and cleared away without her having to lift a finger. She really enjoys all the varied activities that are laid on for everyone especially when the children from the school next door are involved. We were very lucky to find her a room at Appleby House when it became obvious that living on her own was not a valid option.

l visit my friend and neighbour, l visit mainly after lunch, she looks so calm and is always delighted to see me, although she does not remember who l am, she always looks lovely, especially her hair, it is plaited and with a bow, a very personal touch. She is calm and content and the attention to the
extra personal care she receives is excellent. I am personally delighted to spend time at Appleby Care Home, all of the staff are exceptional. I am always greeted with a smile from your staff and am offered tea and a slice of delicious cake too. I have recommended Appleby to a friend for her parents.

My mum is transformed by Appleby House she is joyful, affectionate and delighted. She says that they're all so lovely to her every time I visit, which is often. Her symptoms are massively improved, she's gained a lot of weight (she was thin and withdrawn on arrival). The staff are always trying to find
out more about her history, what subjects to avoid, what brings her happiness and what her preferences are. Their compassion and thoughtfulness are inspiring. I am struck by the way they speak to people with a dementia diagnosis, it's so positive and uplifting, it has taught me to try and speak to everyone the same way! There's no judgement, total acceptance, so dignified and positive. I didn't expect my mum to join in with art activities so enthusiastically but her self-esteem and confidence are transformed. She's having a whole new stage of life. A care home doesn't mean life is over, her quality of life is so much higher now and she is enjoying every day of it!

My father moved to Appleby House and has been looked after with care respect and understanding. Any concerns have been addressed immediately and we are updated with any concerns that the staff have about Dad's health and well-being.

We moved dad into Appleby House in August 2022. He has settled in really well. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. We have been so lucky to find Appleby House. We could no longer meet dad's needs by caring for him in his own home and we all feel a huge weight has been lifted from us since he became a resident. All the staff are so kind and considerate - always cheerful and smiling. The dread we felt when visiting
him in his own home - never knowing what we would find and then not being able to leave him at all, has gone. We can now visit with the knowledge he is safe and well cared for. I can't thank you enough for that.

My Mum (95) has been here for 6 months. She came straight from hospital after a fall. From the moment she arrived I knew she was in the right place as she was showered with so much care and attention.
Her life has been so much fuller at Appleby House, singing in the choir, gardening, interacting with
local school children, painting, playing board games and exercise classes. She was given the opportunity of writing to the Queen to congratulate her on her Jubilee and is very proud of the thank you letter received back from her Lady in Waiting. The effort put in by the staff at Appleby House for a fabulous Jubilee Party was immense and was a really unifying event. The icing on the cake was a ‘Dreams come True’ trip to Wimbledon in June which came from staff talking and listening to Mum and finding out about her love of tennis.
Team Appleby inspire confidence and since Mum entered their door I started sleeping soundly at night once again knowing that she was in such capable hands.

Appleby House care home is an amazing place. Because I had Covid 19 I couldn't visit in person before moving my Mum and Step Dad here in April 2022. I had read all the reviews and placed my trust in these, hoping that they were true and I am delighted to say that they were. Both my Mum and Step Dad
are thriving here. They have so many new friends and so much to do to occupy their time, they even have their own garden area where they are growing fruit and vegetables. The communication from all the team, particularly the manager, is fantastic. When I visit each week I am greeted with smiles and updates. It is a very clean, safe, and secure environment. I can see that their physical needs are taken care of but also their mental well-being. All the staff are so caring and show a genuine interest in who my Mum and Step Dad are now and who they were when they were younger, and that makes them happy. I have zero worries or concerns as I know that they are in safe hands at Appleby.

I have witnessed nothing but kindness and professionalism to my mother over the last five months of her being in Appleby House Care Home.
The home is clean, safe and has regular staff who are all very friendly and deliver a high standard of care and excellent at reassuring Mum and making her feel

My mother is in this care home now due to the early stages of dementia and the frailty and weakness of a 92-year-old, my brothers and I have been very pleased with the care she has been given by the staff. She had previously spent extended periods in hospital and when visiting her there it was always
a trauma for her when we were leaving her at the end of the visit. Since she has been at Appleby this hasn't happened. She became settled, very quickly. For anyone that is unable to visit (for whatever reason), they will arrange video conversations which is an excellent idea. They have also printed pictures of family that my wife and one of my brothers have emailed to them, after printing, they put them in an album (which I believe the home have supplied). Staff have had a very flexible approach to mealtimes and although they prefer visitors to avoid these times, they will accommodate by bringing her meal to her room where visits currently take place. She always appears clean and tidy.

My mother-in-law has been at Appleby Care Home for about three months now. She appears to have settled in well and her room is nice and comfortable. The care staff are always welcoming and friendly, and if we ask questions or enquire about any aspect of my mother-in-law's health, they take the time
to check and reply. Every time we've visited my mother-in-law is always in the main room, where she is mixing with others. She is clean and her hair is tied up and her nails are trim. The most important thing from our point of view is that my mother-in-law is not stressed by our departure each time and whilst we are there, she laughs a lot with us. These are good indications that she's relaxed and safe. As we live so far away, it's been lovely that the staff member has printed out photos that I've sent her, to put into an album for my mother-in-law. A lovely atmosphere and bright, clean, and well-presented home with dedicated staff. Thank you to the whole team! Happy Christmas.

If you are looking for a care home that truly cares and loves your family, I would hand on heart say look no further. My Grandma started by just going to the day centre and as time has gone on she needed more care so she now lives in. I know it’s a really emotional time finding the right place for your
loved ones as you're trusting someone else to love and look after them as you do, and trust me I have high expectations so this wasn’t easy. If I’m really honest I judged Appleby House like a book cover as there are many other fancy care homes and I didn’t think Appleby House was one. But I was so wrong to judge in this way because they are so much more, and it’s very rare to find such a loving, fun, home-from-home, loving environment. All the staff are so kind, loving, and caring to the residents. I love how they know each resident inside out from their favourite meals, activities, to their funny ways. I didn’t think it was possible for me to trust anyone to look after my grandma but I have.

I haven’t been at Appleby House long – I joined as home manager in early 2014 – but I’m completely committed to meeting the challenge of making this home the care home of choice for people in the Epsom area. I want us to have full occupancy and a waiting list!


As home manager I’m passionate about providing the best possible care to residents to enhance their lives. I love involving residents and my team in how things are run. I believe my role is to lead by example to create a good culture at Appleby House. That can come down to things like how I speak to people, being smiling and positive and being a good team player. It’s my job to motivate staff and promote their development through training and supervision. I thrive on working with my team to bring about change – stretching them and seeing positive change happen.


I have to say that the best part of the day for me is walking around the home talking to residents and staff. We always have a good laugh and it’s the time when I get the inspiration to make any changes that are needed. But what I don’t need to change at Appleby House is the terrific atmosphere: it’s really friendly and welcoming, and new people visiting us are always really struck by that. We also offer a huge range of quality care services – particularly around dementia care – and this sets us apart from our competitors too.


I’ve lots of plans for Appleby House over the coming months, including increasing the social activities for residents, improving the dining experience for them and sprucing up the home. There’s lots to do but I’ve a great team, so I’m confident we can make it happen.
