Hill Brow is a purpose-designed 30-bed family owned and run care home, which is rated outstanding by CQC (April 2022). Friendly trained carers contribute towards a homely and happy atmosphere in which residents are supported in their choices and lifestyles. All of the team are permanent, agency staff are never used allowing strong relationships to form between residents and team.

The resident’s independence, dignity and care is at the centre of everything the staff of Hill Brow do. The home also works closely with other health care professionals in providing 24-hour care, which helps to reduce the need for hospital admissions.

There is a full and diverse activities programme, providing many opportunities to socialise. Outside there are beautiful landscaped gardens with flat paths and a large fish pond for residents to enjoy. The residents take an active role in running the home, helping to create the menu's, activities and social programme. Hill Brow is a happy home, where the resident's happiness and welfare comes first.

My Mother in Law has been living at Hill Brow for just over a year and I and all our family are thrilled with the care, love and attention she receives. All of the staff are wonderful and the standards of care are extremely high, led by the management team. There is a perfect mix of professionalism
and humour which makes 'the house', as my Mother in Law calls it, just like living in a large family. We couldn't be happier.

Hill Brow is a fantastic care home with competent and caring staff. My wife and I are very grateful for the homely environment it provides for our Mum. She is very happy and has cultivated many new friendships in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

My Auntie moved to Hill Brow at the age of 91 years. Until this time she had lived in her own home but she recognised the time had come to move to a place where she would have company and be looked after. She was very nervous. On the day of the move into the home the staff at Hill Brow welcomed her
and made her very comfortable and cared for. She quickly felt at home at Hill Brow and that was thanks to the kindness and care shown to her by all the people there looking after her. My Auntie went out on outings, did activities such as flower arranging, took part in the Sing Song and generally has been having a fantastic time. So much so she told me after only a few weeks at Hill Brow she didn't want to go back to her home. This was such a comforting comment for me to hear her say. She was happy and getting involved in all things going on at the Home. If it's care and kindness your loved one needs I would highly recommend Hill Brow.

I noticed my father's plastic water jug and 2 plastic glasses in his room had not been refreshed over two days. I reported to management. The rooms would benefit from blackout blinds, far too light. One evening I was present, I noticed his bed hadn't been made, but the two girls, who were finishing
their shift, did notice also; and changed and made his bed as I was there. They should also pay attention to applying the name pins onto residents' clothes, particularly on thin items like socks. The pins are sharp and can sit slightly proud.
When I took my father to the hospital for tests, they said care homes should be particularly vigilant in monitoring residents' hydration in a heatwave. I was recommended to another care home. My father is now happily settled, hydrated, and being looked after in his new care home.

With regard to resident water jugs, these are changed as a minimum twice a day in addition to our residents being offered refreshments every two hours outside of meal times. It is regrettable that you were unable to raise your concerns with the home when your loved one was staying with us, so we could have discussed and addressed appropriately. We know that you were disappointed that your loved one was unable to stay in the home beyond the respite period you had pre-arranged. However, we are so pleased to hear that your father is happy and settled.

My father has stayed at Hill Brow Residential Care Home a number of times for respite care whilst we take a holiday. He always settles quickly and looks forward to being with the staff, who both understand his needs and who know which elements of the home really work for Dad. The ability to walk around
the beautiful gardens is a priority for Dad as well as being able to balance his own privacy with time with staff and residents. He has enjoyed his three stays so much; we are in the process of working with Hill Brow to find Dad a permanent stay. From my point of view, I know I can trust the excellent care and company he receives, which gives me huge confidence to make the next step in his care. The staff are excellent at looking after the needs of the residents and their relatives.

Dad has been a resident at Hill Brow Residential Care Home since April and was quick to settle due to the attention and care he received from the staff. We had regular updates about him during the first couple of weeks which helped to settle us too. It is a bonus that Dad has been able to bring some
of his furniture with him, and his room looks homely and familiar. All the staff are caring, helpful and ready with a smile. Dad says that he is very comfortable, enjoys the food and is happy with his move. We couldn't ask for more, and I would readily recommend the home.

Since the day of our family visit to consider a place for my mum to date, I have been so pleased with our choice. My mum arrived in Dec 2021 during the Covid pandemic and was in her room most of that time. This is not only a huge demand on her but on the staff who were great, and through that time,
so caring and diligent in their Covid protection measures and procedures. It was assuring to know how much effort was put in to stop the cross infection and keep my mum and others safe and well. Access to primary care was available, and booster vaccination was carried out too. Mum has settled well and has begun to get involved in daytime activities that she refused to do when living at home. This is mostly because she is hard of hearing and lacked confidence. The efforts of the staff to get her involved are really commendable, and it adds to our confidence that Mum is involved and not sitting in her room and becoming lonely. We are so pleased with the staff and the setting at Hill Brow Residential Care Home.

My mum became a resident in December 2021 and has settled in very well. She enjoys joining in with most of the activities and has made friends too. The staff have been wonderful in making her feel at home and part of the family. We are so happy that she is here and we have noticed such a difference
in her in every way. We are very grateful for the weekly and monthly dates regarding Mum including photos too of all the activities they do. All of the staff are caring and kind.

Since our Mother moved to Hillbrow Residential Home she has taken on a new lease of life. From day one it was very apparent from the attitude of the staff and management that it was a happy and professionally run home. Not once whether on the phone or being greeted at the front door did I ever hear
or see unhappy staff. The cheerful and genuine care given to our Mother is first class.

My mother has been a resident of Hill House Nursing and Dementia Home since August, having been moved from another home. Despite having been recently bereaved as well as having to deal with all the confusion and changes that Dementia brings, she has settled very quickly. Her room is beautiful and spacious
enough to house many of her precious photos, pictures, books and even some of her own furniture.
The care that she is receiving is amazing. She is loved and appreciated and encouraged to make her own decisions as well as always being kept safe. New friends are being made and there are daily opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities.
As family members, we are respected and communicated with frequently.
I have complete confidence in all aspects of Mum’s care and am hugely grateful to every member of staff who have provided the love that has been needed for Mum to continue her journey.

My mum has been at Hill Brow Residential Care Home for just a few weeks but already she is more settled, less stressed and engaging with fellow residents and staff. The care and genuine feel of ‘family’ is evident as soon as you step through the doors of Hill Brow, every member of staff (from the manager
right through to laundry and maintenance teams) is warm, welcoming and continually doing their best for residents, nothing is too much trouble. It is such a relief for my brothers and I to know that she is safe and well looked after within a caring ‘family’.

My father has Alzheimer's and moved to Hill Brow Residential Care Home at the end of August following the sudden death of our mother, who had been his main carer. The staff fell over themselves to get to know Dad and make him feel welcome and valued. He has participated in far more of the activities
than we anticipated and his general mood and well-being seems to have improved as a result. He frequently tells us how blessed he is to have such good care and the staff are always very welcoming when we visit or take him out. I would highly recommend Hill Brow and can't express enough how grateful we are to have found you!

Hill Brow has given my mother-in-law the companionship and daily interactions which have lifted her mood and given her purpose. Staff understand her needs and are always on hand when she needs them. Would highly recommend as it feels like home and both staff and residents always happy and interacting

I have been impressed by the care provided during the difficult COVID-19 lockdown that has kept residents safe, but has also well-being. Safe visits have been made possible and entertainment for residents has been provided. As soon as it was possible, a hearing test was arranged for my mother so she
could join in conversations and activities. Mum enjoys a number of the entertainments provided, especially giant crosswords and spelling games. The pictures and newsletters of these events have been appreciated by the family to see that mum was okay. I was also grateful for some staff moving into the residential home during the initial lockdown to look after residents and prevent the virus coming in to the home.

Mum has been resident in Hill Brow since December 2017, and I travel over regularly from Dublin (pre lockdown!) to see her. I have got to know the staff who are always lovely and friendly and take great care of Mum. The staff take care of meeting her individual needs, and the individual needs of all
the other residents I’ve met when I’m visiting.
During the COVID lockdown Hill Brow staff have worked diligently under huge pressure while maintaining high standards in keeping residents safe and happy. I stay in daily touch with Mum thanks to the phone and video calls. Thank goodness for technology until in-person visiting allows again! Thank you, to the manager and all the staff.

My Father has been in Hill Brow since October 2019. He is very well looked after and his physical health has improved significantly since he has been there. The staff are very caring and know the little things that are important to him eg his daily newspaper and glass of wine. The standards are very
high and I have never had any concerns about any aspect of his care. I would certainly recommend Hill Brow to anyone looking for a suitable care home.

Hill Brow have shown great kindness and care towards my father-in-law and towards us as a family. They make us feel welcome when we visit and their standard of care for my father-in-law is very high. We feel that my father-in-law is happier at Hill Brow than he has been for years. His every need is
taken care of and he has access to engaging activities which, although he can't remember that he's done them, are really good for keeping him active and stimulated. He has always loved his food and Hill Brow provides him with excellent meals and snacks throughout the day. The home is clean and fragrant and members of staff talk to the residents with respect and kindness.

I am Alison and the proud Proprietor of Woodlands & Hill Brow Ltd. I am a nurse holding a Degree in Nursing with a Diploma in Elderly Care. I left the NHS where I was Ward Manager of an elderly care unit at The Royal Free Hospital, to assumed control of Woodlands & Hill Brow following my mother's retirement in 1998. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved in our homes, providing the highest standards of care which are built on an ethos of family-centred care. I am also a teacher and assessor ensuring I can support our staff through their development and training.

One of the best parts of my job is preparing meals for the residents at Hill Brow. I make sure to have individual conversations with each resident to learn about their favourite foods and preferred drinks. It's important to me that they are happy, so I strive to provide them with wholesome, delicious, and nutritious meals that they truly enjoy.

Job Title: Activities Coordinator Joined: 2012

I love my job as an activities coordinator. The most important part of my day to me is spending quality time with the residents whether in a group activity or chatting on a one to one basis. I particularly enjoy the art and craft activities. When I first started the Wednesday afternoon Art Club I could only persuade a few of the residents to join in, now I have residents and their family join in!


A regular Friday afternoon activity which I introduced soon after I started in this role is Word Association. I always get full attendance for this as the associations can be very unpredictable and humorous.


Story writing is another popular activity. I usually try to tie the theme into a current event or choose a popular childhood memory to develop into a story, however by far the most popular theme is a murder mystery. All of the residents have an opportunity to add a suggestion which is included in the story. The stories are a great way to bring out their sense of humour and it never fails to surprise me how inventive they can be.


I have also introduced food and cooking activities where I have helped the residents pipe onto cakes and biscuits with chocolate or icing and they get to eat their own creations! I use my love of art, cake decorating and watercolour painting to develop new projects and my latest creation is a giant bingo game which can also be used for quiz questions. We always look forward to our weekly outings and also the musicians that come to perform.


It’s a real privilege to be able to spend so much time with our residents. I feel very much appreciated by our residents and enjoy being part of the team at Hill Brow.

My name is Doug, I am the facilities manager for the Woodlands and Hill Brow Group. I am a qualified electrician and have been in the building industry for nearly 40 years. I was introduced to the team at Woodlands and Hill Brow Ltd when I was involved in the building of Hill House nursing home and then when I designed the electrical systems at Farnham Mill. I take pride in my maintenance team and in providing a safe, well maintained, attractive place for the residents and staff alike to live and work.
