Walstead Place Care Home in Haywards Heath is a magnificent 19th-century country squire’s residence, sensitively converted to provide the highest standard of residential care for up to 43 elderly residents, including trial stays, short stays, convalescent care, and permanent care. for individuals or couples.

The care home is set in its own beautiful gardens of some 2½ acres. Walstead Place dates back to 1852, in the small hamlet of Walstead, within a mile of the picturesque village of Lindfield where there is a post office, bank and many local shops and pubs. The home is conveniently placed in relation to the main line commuter station to London and the main motorway network and with Brighton and the South Coast only 12 miles away.

Walstead Place benefits from a dedicated health and wellbeing co-ordinator who plans a wide range of hobbies, events and activities that can be enjoyed by everyone. Events and activities are based on residents' likes, dislikes and feedback to ensure they are inclusive and remain varied. Dining is an important part of the day to day life at Walstead Place. A qualified chef and their team take great pride in producing varied and appetising menus, providing a nutritious and balanced diet. The cuisine is carefully chosen to meet each resident's nutritional needs.

My oldest (in both senses of the word) friend spent three weeks at Walstead Place. He was there for respite care. From the beginning, the process gave me plenty of confidence that this was going to be a great choice. Although our initial enquiry was probably a few months too early, Walstead said they
would be in touch every few weeks and then confirm his booking, a couple of months in advance. They did exactly what they said they would do.
The staff really made my friend feel welcome and every time I saw him he was full of praise for them. He was well looked after. He was a bit under the weather on arrival and looked so much better by the time he left. The staff made time to have a chat and a joke and never made either of us feel like they were too busy to talk or help. The facilities and location are lovely. The dining room seemed buzzy and he reported that the food was good (and he is a fussy fellow) It looked good to me too. He wants to go back next time he needs respite care.

My friend was very well looked after by the marvellous staff here. The room is bright and airy with a lovely view where my friend could see the comings and goings. He came out having put on a small amount of weight which is excellent as he's underweight. He ate quite well but is a very fussy eater and
has a tiny appetite so the staff managed with very well to eat more. Thanks.

This is my mother's 10th stay and as always, she is happy and well cared for and the house is clean and well run. She loves the staff and trusts their care and judgment in my absence. She is always happy to be here.

My husband is extremely happy here and very relaxed. The staff are amazing not only in the standard of care they give - which is excellent, but in the kindness they give too. The atmosphere in the home is happy. The staff know all their residents very well and share fun and laughter with them as well
as empathy. It is not easy to leave a relative in the care of others but the minute I visited here, I knew it would be exactly right. My son and I feel like part of a big happy family here. Thank you!

Home is well run. Staff are excellent, they work very hard. Residents free to do what they wish, whether to take part in activities or do their own thing. Meals basic but well cooked and tea or coffee offered during the day. As for me they dealt with and resolved my medical problems, so no need to continue
as a resident.

Mum has benefitted greatly from her stay at Walstead Place Care Home, following hospital admission.
She has enjoyed the activities, especially the singing and impersonator!

Broadly a satisfactory experience. The staff were generally attentive. Management was very good at dealing with queries and taking action when needed. Flexibility in arrangements was good. The standard of food could be better. The room was light and airy providing a feel-good factor. Delightful gardens.
The chiropractor and hairdresser both did a great job. On balance, we would consider returning if the need arises.

Dad went for a week's respite care. Every time we visited he was cheerful, clean, relaxed and comfortable. I would not have any doubts about him going back for future respite care. By the end of the week he was joking with staff as if he had lived there for months. Everyone was helpful, lots of tea
or coffee on offer, nothing seemed to be any trouble. A very positive experience. If I'm being fussy, there was a wee smell in the corridor outside his room, but his room was fine.

We are happy overall with the care provided. My aunt particularly enjoys the surrounding gardens and food. I have unfortunately experienced problems with communication in relation to a hospital visit and the setting up of a direct debit to pay for care. Despite this, we are happy with the service and

My mother always appears well turned out, staff have clearly cared for her personal needs. She is increasingly more settled and content despite her level of confusion.
The activities are varied and designed to stimulate engagement with life but also are supported by staff to ensure all residents
who want to can participate irrespective of their physical or mental capacity.
Staff always know where my mother is as soon as I walk through in the door before I even ask! They are fully involved in the personal relationships with their residents.
Food is excellent and plentiful. Monitoring of liquids is carried out routinely.,
The grounds allow for residents to be outside as much as good weather allows and are encouraged to take part in gardening activities such as baskets/planting.
Excellent care all round. My mind is always at peace now.

My role as Home Manager covers everything that helps Walstead Place feel like a true home for our residents. I’m responsible for making sure they’re well cared for, safe, and happy, but just as importantly, that they feel heard, respected, and involved.


I’ve worked in health and social care for over 25 years, across a wide range of services including residential care, nursing homes, and specialist neurorehabilitation. I’ve managed homes of all shapes and sizes, and every setting has taught me something valuable about people, leadership, and the importance of individualised care.


The greatest joy is seeing residents genuinely engaged, feeling independent, involved, and connected. From rediscovering a hobby to joining in the daily life of the home, those moments matter. I love when residents take ownership, whether it’s choosing meals, helping in the garden, or simply having their voice heard. It reinforces that this is their home, not just a place where care is provided.
