I just wanted to send a review about Harbour Rise.
My mother was admited into hospital after an incident in December 2022, on discharge as a family we found Harbour Rise and arranged for Mum to go straight there.
From day 1 the team over there could not have been more helpful and caring. Mum needed
a lot of attention a year ago and nothing was too much. She has recovered very well in the following 12 months and that is all down to the support, nutrition and just general sense of comfort that is over there.
The staff are all super friendly and can't do enough for the residents. The food looks fantastic and Mum loves it.
The regular updates, photos and events are all just part of what makes this an ideal home for mum.
Plenty of hard work goes into making it all look very easy. I'd happily recommend Harbour Rise to anyone in the need of a first-rate care home.

The home boasts a commendable staff-to-resident ratio, ensuring unparalleled care from dedicated staff. The owners' hands-on approach fosters trust and accountability, creating a unique and positive atmosphere. Residents are consistently treated with dignity and respect.
Harbour Rise excels in providing
a diverse range of daily activities, from staff-led initiatives to performances by various singers, bands, a harpist, exercise sessions led by a dedicated instructor and even visits from an animal man who brings small petting animals. Regular trips in the minibuses, family dinners and weekly worship are just a few of the other events that further contribute to a strong sense of community.
The ability to communicate with my aunt via video calling has been invaluable. We have both greatly benefited from being able to see each other and have a good chat.
In a world where finding compassionate care can be challenging, Harbour Rise stands out as a beacon of excellence.

It was a tough decision to find care for my very independent aunt, but Harbour Rise stood head and shoulders above the competition.
Like every family we want the best care for our relatives and for them to be treated as the individual that they are, with the dignity and respect they deserve. We’ve
seen this happen at Harbour Rise and we felt at ease handing over her care to the team.
We were concerned at first about how she’d settle but it didn’t take her long. We would go to visit her and she would wander off back to the lounge to be back with her new friends, chatting and laughing and completely oblivious to us being there! We couldn’t have wished for anything better! To see her happy was the best gift. She always looks clean and well put together, hair done and painted nails. From living on her own to being with people whenever she wants to, has done her so much good. The stimulation has made such a difference to her communication skills and she seems so animated and lively.

We visited several homes and Mum refused them as boring and the wrong atmosphere. Following a fall she had to go into respite care and a place was found at Harbour Rise. The care received by staff during the difficult settling-in period was balanced and excellent. Mum was treated as an adult and not
talked down to. She decided that this would be her permanent residence. I have been impressed with the energy and friendliness of all the staff and their pleasant way of challenging unknown people. Staff are happy to discuss care and concerns with the family which takes a great deal of worry from the family. I am happy that my Mother is well cared for at Harbour Rise. The moving from her own house into a care home was a traumatic experience for my Mum but the help and support received at Harbour Rise made this a much smoother process.

My father-in-law has recently moved into Harbour Rise and has settled very well. He came to know the staff at the home from a prior stay earlier in the year which was very successful. My family could not be more happy and it has given our family peace of mind that he is staying somewhere so nice and
homely.
The staff are so caring and they are so happy and it shows in everything they do. The home is full of activities and the Christmas parties and food over the last couple of weeks has been most impressive.
There were homemade mince pies and mulled wine and the atmosphere was wonderful.
The facilities are second to none and his bedroom is immaculate. He loves to sit in the conservatory or the lounge enjoying the view. The little touches are simply incredible, my father-in-law is a fan of a specific football club and they had put up a welcome to him with the club’s emblem on it. He says to the family ‘I am so lucky to be in this luxury hotel’!

After my nan being here for a number of years when Grandad's health began to decline he knew it was the only place for him. Knowing he is safe and perfectly looked after gives us all such great peace of mind. Grandad has settled in so well with most of the carers remembering him from visiting Nan and
his visits to day care. The care here seems not only professional but personal which is all you can ask for. Harbour Rise will always be on hand if anything changes and provide regular updates. We all love the fact we can use the cafe to sit and chat as well which gives it such a more relaxed feel.

Our dad has experienced Harbour Rise through daycare attendance, respite stay and, more recently, as a resident. At each of these stages, the help and support we have received has been outstanding - professional, caring, efficient and welcoming. As a consequence, any worries we might have had about
his ability to settle in were immediately eased. We have been particularly pleased with the stimulating environment promoted at the home, with lots of activities and events. Moreover, the staff (across the board) know Dad's name and know his love of golf and a local football team! These small, personal things, have been so important in making him, very quickly, feel part of the the Harbour Rise community. We greatly appreciate the commitment and skill which goes into making all of this possible.

Father-in-law was a 99-year-old widower with increasing care needs. Because he was so proud of his independence we wondered how well he would settle into residential care. We need not have worried! He is happy there!
Last week was his 100th birthday. We have a touching video of him overcome with emotion
as he read, a few days later, the celebratory birthday card which he received from the king and which, although a keen Royalist, he had not expected. The trouble Harbour Rise took to ensure they received that card! When it had failed to arrive by the afternoon of his birthday, without any prompting they phoned the palace to establish when it had been posted and followed this up with the palace until the card finally arrived. That card meant so much to him and the effort Harbour Rise took to ensure his centenary was acknowledged by the king is but one of many examples of the staff going "above and beyond" to ensure he is made to feel special.

My mother-in-law moved into Harbour Rise because the ceiling fell down in her house. My family and I called to see if there was any availability. To our great fortune, a lovely room with sea views was available straight away. We were a little apprehensive but our experience at Harbour Rise has been
fantastic. My mother-in-law is happy and content and really enjoys all the staff who are so happy and the quality of the care is so good, the staff cannot do enough for her. She even made up that it was her birthday and they made her a cake and a real fuss. Nothing is too much trouble and she hasn’t looked this well in a long time. The home encourages her to come downstairs which she does but she does also enjoy looking at the sea views. She loves the food and the pampering on a Friday when she has her hair done by the resident hairdresser. The office and management are really engaging and understanding of the stressful situation we found ourselves in and they couldn’t do more to help us.

Dad moved into Harbour Rise a month ago after struggling at home. He knew the home well as Mum was a resident there for 5 years and Dad had also been twice for respite. It was a difficult decision to admit he needed full-time care, but he said he only wanted to go to Harbour Rise! The process was very
smooth as I rang up on a Sunday and luckily they had a room available and Dad moved in on the Friday. Dad soon settled in and enjoys spending time in the communal lounge but also likes to go back to his room after supper to watch his TV. The staff were pleased to see him and made him feel very welcome. Dad now knows he has made the right decision and is very happy and content. Prior to admission, Dad seemed very low in mood but now he is always smiling when I visit and enjoys telling me what he has had to eat and the activities he has participated in. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they are always there for the families just as much as the residents.

My mother was attending Harbour Rise’s day care centre four times a week and she thoroughly enjoyed attending the centre. She was fond of the residents and staff and she got to know them over the last year or so. The company and stimulation were a big plus. My mum then had a fall at home and I thought
she might benefit from two weeks respite care to build up her strength and confidence again. This has been so successful, my mum looks so much better. I then made the decision to move mum into full-time care, it was the best option for both mum and myself. I now visit my mum knowing she is in a safe caring environment as I was unable to care for her now that her care needs had increased. The same daycare staff work in other areas of the home meaning that everyone knows her and it's lovely to see her enjoying life there. I am so grateful to Harbour Rise for the care provided, it now allows me to visit her at convenient times and I am so pleased with how well she is looking again.

My father has just spent two weeks of respite care at Harbour Rise in Paignton, whilst I went on a much-needed holiday. My father attends the daycare facility twice a week and enjoys this very much. I was so pleased that Harbour Rise had a room available to allow me to go away without worrying.
My
father looks so much better on my return, I think he has enjoyed the wonderful food and sitting with the residents some of whom he has become quite friendly with. He really enjoys the activities and entertainment.
He looks so well kept and his demeanour is so improved. His rapport with the staff (who are simply wonderful) is just so nice, it's just like a family. When I spoke to him on the phone, he said 'I like the hotel I am staying in'.
The respite stay has allowed me to rest and I am so thankful for the care provided. My father will go back to daycare again now but if he required respite care again or full-time care we would not look anywhere else.

Our choice of home was based on the excellent reputation the home had already earned.
It was clear the owners, management and staff were striving to make the home the very best environment for its residents it could be. Everything from the activities and facilities to the breadth of family communication
and events are clearly given attention to detail. The standard of care was exemplary.
Top priority was how my aunt would be treated and how she would feel. Everyone was so courteous, respectful, supportive and compassionate with our loved one. She was looked after fantastically.
Harbour Rise catered with my aunt's decline and made my aunt feel special, cared for and safe.
It is with great sadness that my aunt passed away following a stroke, but we take solace in knowing she was in the very best place. Members of the home had built up such a strong bond with her that some attended her funeral.
We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending the home to anyone.

My brother and I visited Harbour Rise, after discussing with our Mother, that at 97 years of age, she now needed 24/7 care, having been living alone independently for several years.
From the moment we entered the home, we were greeted with warmth and friendliness by staff, who took time to show us
around. When we left we decided that this was the 'home from home' we would like our Mum to reside in.
We brought Mum (she being a little reluctant, at first) to visit and to see her room. This is now her second week. She immediately felt at home and is already benefitting from interaction with other residents and staff, as well as enjoying the wonderful meals and activities provided.
It has been especially reassuring to receive regular, detailed email and photograph updates on her first few days.
We know that her remaining years will be spent being content and well looked after in the happy place that is Harbour Rise.

My father moved into Harbour Rise in July 2021, we have come to know the staff and the residents very well and we couldn’t be happier. The care my father receives is so good and my family feel so lucky he is at Harbour Rise. He takes part in the activities and is taken out on the bus for trips around
Torbay and he adores the food, especially the breakfasts. When my family visits the home the atmosphere is simply wonderful and so uplifting. Everyone is so friendly and they know the smallest details about my dad. We look forward to the weekly email and we enjoy the events held such as the Garden Party and the Christmas Fayre where Dad was able to buy some Christmas presents for his family. The home recently hosted my Father's 100th birthday party in the Café area and we had over 20 guests, it was so nice to have this catered for by Harbour Rise in a safe environment, my sister and brother and I will be forever grateful to the home for their hospitality and kindness on this day.

Dad arrived in October for respite care and was initially reluctant to be there.
However, the whole team went out of their way to help him settle, and make him welcome.
The wonderful staff all made a concerted effort to get to know him, his likes and his dislikes, and they have gone out of their
way to meet his needs and address his concerns.
Clearly, nothing is too much trouble, even his exacting requirements for the perfect cup of tea have been met! Dad regularly says how much he enjoys the meals.
The care team have been excellent and always speak well of Dad, even when he is having a bad day. I regularly visit and always find all of the staff welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The owners and the manager are clearly passionate about what they do and the regular communications I receive leave me relaxed knowing Dad is in such good care.
Dad is settled and happier now. I truly hope he can spend the rest of his days there.

My father was admitted to Harbour Rise in 2022 and spent his remaining weeks there until he sadly died.
The care he received was second to none and we felt that he was in the best hands possible. The management and staff could not do enough for us. They even accommodated my mum so that she could be
with her husband at that difficult time. It was more like a 5-star hotel than a rest home.
My mum still visits weekly.
Well done to you all. You are a great team and I would have no hesitation in recommending the home to others.

My aunt had a very difficult 2022. After various spells in Hospital, we needed a good long-term solution for her care needs, being no longer capable of looking after herself. The admission process into Harbour Rise was professionally managed. On arrival, my aunt was very anxious but within days had
settled into the Harbour Rise routine of activities and interaction. She has actually blossomed physically, eating well and doing greater movement than before. She is now adamant that she wants to stay at Harbour Rise. All the staff I have interacted with have been both professional and caring, unfortunately fairly unique among care providers.

My dad moved to Harbour Rise last autumn after he was no longer able to live on his own. He has been very well looked after by all the staff at Harbour Rise since his move, they have made a real effort to get to know him and help him settle in. Everyone is so friendly and helpful, getting to know his
family when we phone or visit. The little café is a lovely place to sit in when we visit. It has given us all so much peace of mind knowing he is so very well looked after. Everything is well kept and there are lovely views of the sea which my dad loves as he has always lived near the sea. He is enjoying the company of others after having lived on his own for so long. The staff are always ready to help and are so kind and caring with all the residents. The variety of daily activities helps the time pass and keeps everyone entertained and we are kept up to date with regular communications. Thank you to everyone at Harbour Rise for their amazing care.

Julia Welch

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2021

Hello, I’m Julia! I joined Harbour Rise in August 2021, having previously managed an Outstanding-rated homecare company and then transitioning to managing Residential Care several years ago. I’m dedicated to providing high-quality care and enjoy taking a proactive approach in my work. I love spending time with the wonderful people at Harbour Rise, listening to their stories, and ensuring that their care aligns with their wishes and what matters most to them. Originally from a fishing town in Southern Ireland, I’ve always lived near the sea, and being by the water never fails to make me feel happy and calm, so working at Harbour Rise feels like a perfect fit. I love spending time with my husband, our three daughters, and our two wonderful grandchildren. I relax by reading, especially historical novels, and good mystery stories, and if I can listen to my book whilst walking along by the sea, then that is even better!

Cecile Edwards

Job Title: Director Joined: 2007

Although I was born and educated in France (Angers University) and Yorkshire (Hull University), I have now spent more time living in the UK than in France! I have been the joint director and owner of Harbour Rise since 2007, working very closely with my husband Mark, who was born in Marldon, Paignton. Working at Harbour Rise gives me a real sense of achievement as I love to be involved in a team of passionate and dedicated staff who give nothing but their best to our lovely residents.


I am also the very proud mother of three lovely and lively boys. Football seems to be the main thing we talk about at home, so in my spare time I love to go out with friends, go shopping and prepare a nice meal for all of us to enjoy! If I can, I also love to turn my phone off and get stuck into a great book!

Mark Edwards

Job Title: Director Joined: 2007

I was born in Paignton, and although I worked in finance in London for 20 years, I was delighted to return to Devon to raise my family of 3 boys and further develop and improve Harbour Rise.


We have owned Harbour Rise since 2007, and as well as caring for many wonderful residents, we have transformed the home from 22 to 44 bedrooms, and I believe there is not an inch that we have not renovated or improved! I love the warmth and atmosphere of the home. Although the care industry can be stressful, I enjoy seeing our staff and residents looking happy and thriving – this is our biggest achievement.


Outside of work, I love to be busy with water sports, cycling and of course football! Watching my sons play football is my favourite part of the weekend, as well as watching Arsenal and Plymouth Argyle.
I enjoy a glass of red wine in the winter and a pastis in the summer, love to spend time off in France, where I still try to improve my French.

Laura Harding

Job Title: Managerial Support Joined: 2008

Hello, I’m Laura! I have had the pleasure of working at Harbour Rise for the past 20 years, during which I’ve taken on a variety of roles, gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge along the way. For just over a year now, I’ve been providing managerial support, a role I find both engaging and rewarding.


Outside of work, I’m a proud mother of three wonderful children who bring immense joy to my life. Our family has recently grown with the addition of Bertie, our beautiful Cockapoo puppy, who has quickly become a beloved member of our household.


In my free time, I love spending quality moments with family and friends, going for walks, and diving into a good book.

Tash Wilkins

Job Title: Head of Care Joined: 1998

I started my career in 1998, working in the laundry at Harbour Rise. Over the years, I’ve taken on many different roles and eventually became Head of Care when Mark and Cecile took over the business in 2007. I’ve seen many changes to the home and feel privileged to have been part of its journey. One job I’ll never do, though, is drive the bus—driving’s not exactly my favourite hobby.


When I first started, I was young, free, and single. During my time here, I met and married my husband, Ken, and we now have one son who is an adult. I love getting to know our residents and their families, and I truly believe Harbour Rise is one big family.


Outside of work, I have a busy social life. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going on trips, and attending concerts—especially Take That. I also love going for walks, especially when there’s a nice pub at the end for a relaxing lunch!

Hayley Hamling

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2023

Hi, I’m Hayley. I joined Harbour Rise in January 2023. I previously worked for NRS Healthcare for 10 years. I love my role at Harbour Rise, overseeing everything Daycare – I am very proud of the relationships I have built up with our Daycare guests, their families and the professionals.


I have lived in Paignton for 27 years. I am a very busy Mum of 4 crazy children. In my spare time, I love to eat out, spend time with my family, kayak, swim and do coastal trekking with my youngest daughter, Lexi, who is very well known at Harbour Rise.

Lisa Screech

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2021

Hi, I’m Lisa. I joined Harbour Rise in August 2021, following 3 three years working in an admin role for the Community Neuro Rehab Team at Newton Abbot/Paignton hospital. I liaised with physios, OT’s, families, and patients following their strokes and other brain injuries. I really enjoy working at Harbour Rise as every day is completely different. I am lucky to meet so many interesting people, including our residents, their families, and my colleagues. Remembering everybody’s names at times is skilful!


I have played skittles for over 40 years in Newton Abbot, where I live and enjoy socialising with the team. I have a lovely husband and two children in their twenties, and I love spending time with my family and friends. I also love travelling, and over the next few years, my dream is to see the world. I am partial to chocolates and fine red wine!

Karmen

Karmen Pateman

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2023

Hello, my name is Karmen, and I joined Harbour Rise in 2023, bringing 15 years of administration and organisational experience with me. My favourite role within my job is meeting and chatting with the residents, finding out all about their lives and interests.


Outside of work, I have 4 beautiful children, a very lovely Husband and 2 dogs, all of whom keep me very busy. My weekends are mainly spent watching my 2 Sons play football, come rain or shine. When I do get some free time, I love to travel, eat Italian food and sip a nice glass of prosecco.
