Sadly we lost our precious mum in March this year. Words can not describe just how grateful we are as a family for the wonderful care that mum had during her stay at Harbour Rise. Many of the staff became her 'friend' as she would say to us. Harbour Rise is a lovely place for someone you care about
to spend their final years knowing that their standards are very high, and the staff very caring. Thank you to each and every one of you who took such good care of our mum.

Inevitably we all end up passing away, some of us have an idea on how and where we would spend those last days. Mum always said she wished to end her time in whichever place she called home at the time, she absolutely didn’t want to end her days in a hospital which she had no attachment too.
I would
like to take this opportunity to thank the management and staff of Harbour Rise Paignton for enabling Mum to fulfil her wish.
Mums end of life care was superb, delivered with care and compassion, Mum prided herself on her appearance the staff even made sure she had her earrings and necklace on at all times, her skin routine was maintained too. All this whilst delivering pain relief and support, family visits were facilitated and nothing was ever to much trouble. My family and I will be forever grateful for the respect and dignity shown to Mum in her last days.

Mum came into Harbour Rise in September 2021. It was an incredibly emotional time as she had not been away from us for any length of time during the previous 12 years. After only a couple of weeks, she had started to engage and socialise again and to start to eat and drink and for that we thank the
teams that looked after her on a day to day basis. They were always exceptionally kind and friendly and we had no doubt that Mum was in the best of hands and was being treated with dignity, respect, kindness and happiness.
Unfortunately, following an awful UTI in the previous July, the dementia had crept in, as it does, and this caused the chain of events that led to her passing. We were blessed to have been able to spend every day of the last two weeks with her, saying our goodbyes and sending her off peacefully to be with Dad again. For that opportunity and everyone's kindness at that time we will always be grateful.

My Mum and I are extremely pleased with the care given to my Dad. Harbour Rise spots any abnormalities if they should arrive and treatment is given promptly. We have known the home for many years and we would not wish Dad to be anywhere else. The staff are very helpful, friendly and caring and we have
got to know them all very well over the years, they are like family to Mum and I. The home is always spotless and so clean, it's impeccable. My Mum's mobility is limited and we have carried out different visits throughout the Covid pandemic. We have had window visits, used the homes visiting pods and also used the Harbour Rise cafe which we book via the office. The home has been exceptionally well organised throughout Covid. It has catered extremely well for everyone's needs, ensuring safety for all, we have supported the home in whatever way needed and will continue to do so. 100% satisfaction from our family and we cannot thank everyone enough at Harbour Rise.

My 96-year-old mother has been at Harbour Rise for a couple of months now and we are so, so happy and relieved that she is there, in safe hands and being so well cared for and looked after. Mum became unwell and had to spend some time in hospital. I flew over from Canada to take care of her because
after years of being fiercely independent and determined to look after herself (and not wanting to bother others) she needed help. Harbour Rise rightly has a fabulous reputation and the response and follow up from all the wonderful staff was absolutely superb. We were fortunate that space became available and Mum was able to join this wonderful facility. Thanks to everyone at Harbour Rise for their kind understanding during this difficult time of transition. All of the dedicated staff show love, respect and understanding and help to provide a happy, safe, entertaining environment for Mother. Attention to detail is excellent. In fact, outstanding all around.

Harbour Rise proved to be the best choice of care home to look after my uncle. Every member of staff was respectful to him and he very much appreciated their kindness, help and support especially as he became older and his needs became greater. He really enjoyed the entertainment provided, in particular
the sing-a-longs. There is a bright canteen and social area plus another cosy room with a bar where the residents can just relax and have a tipple. Overall, in my experience, everyone was professional, efficient but also approachable, always pleasant and very caring.

I have recently lost my mother, but for nearly three years, she has called Harbour Rise her home. I can call it her home as the owners, management and staff have become her, and my, family, as well as friends.
Right to the end she had her sense of humour and although the evils of dementia robbed her
of her memory, the staff still made memories and brought out her sense of fun, never rushing, always caring, nothing was too much trouble.
I cannot believe it is possible to find a more amazing, caring and loving group of people than everyone at Harbour Rise.
To anyone who is looking for the very best for their loved ones, I sincerely hope you have the opportunity to make Harbour Rise their home.

Harbour Rise Rest Home has been our saviour. In our hour of need, the team listened to our problems, understood and empathised with them, and more importantly, gave my sister and I the courage to start the process of moving our ninety-nine-year-old mother into their home.
Fiercely independent, but
extremely anxious about her ability to cope any longer, worry was written all over Mum's face. Destiny stepped in when Mum had a fall and, the same day, my sister was signed off with a back problem. It was crunch time. We had to make a decision. Moving into the home in early April and surviving two weeks of self-isolation with much help and support from the wonderful, caring, team, she is now a changed person - the worry has flown away. She is happy and content, extremely well looked after, and safe. She has not looked back and neither have we.
Thank you all at Harbour Rise for returning our lives to us and letting us sleep at night in the knowledge that Mum could not be in better hands.

We felt extremely anxious when helping our friend choose a care home after bad experiences in a previous home but couldn't be happier with our choice. Everyone at Harbour Rise is welcoming and caring and will always help out in any way they can. The management and staff take time to really get to know
their residents and build a strong personal relationship with them. This in turn helps the residents feel safe, respected and well cared for.
The past year must have been extremely challenging for all staff at the home but they have continued to think of new ways to entertain the residents, develop innovations to allow contact with loved ones and share extra communication through emails and the website. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Harbour Rise to anyone choosing a care home.

My mother has been in Harbour Rise for the past 3 months. From day one the level of care and attention provided by the staff has been of the highest standards. I have been particularly impressed with the professionalism and patience with which they have dealt with her dementia problem, particularly
with the added pressure during this difficult lockdown period. In my contacts with the staff they are always cheerful, positive and reassuring.
Also impressive is the management team's efforts to keep families informed through telephone contact on personal issues and emailed weekly bulletins giving information about their wide range of organised social and communal opportunities for residents.
My mother is very happy with her accommodation and feels she is well fed and cared for.
Our choice of Harbour Rise was based on recommendations of local people and its excellent Care Quality Commission review.
I have not been disappointed.

My mum went in to Harbour Rise for respite just after Christmas after a spell in hospital. The carers are amazing in this home, nothing is too much trouble for them. My mum always said that she never wanted to go into care, it was her worst dread but guess what? she has now decided that she wants to
stay there as in her words it is such a lovely place to be. It's a difficult time for everyone at the moment especially those in care but Harbour Rise has pulled out all the stops to allow family to visit one day a week in the pod. Staff have certainly gone the extra mile for all the residents. They send an email every Friday with an update of what's going on in the home with updated pictures on the website of what the residents have been up to that week. They well deserve their outstanding rating from CQC.

My mum has been at Harbour Rise for a number of months. The home is extremely professionally run with management and staff that are hard-working, kind and considerate. Since being at Harbour Rise, my mums quality of life and wellbeing have notably improved as her situation has been well managed, such
that’s she has had some stability. The strengths of Harbour Rise include the kindness and compassion of the staff and attention to detail, with a lot of effort put into small things to improve people’s quality of life. Staff are very proactive and things always appear under control. This has been illustrated under the challenging conditions of Covid-19 whereby high standards have been maintained due to obvious hard work and good decision making. Staff are very approachable and communication with relatives is good. Whenever I visit my mum, I am able to leave feeling very reassured that she is well looked after, which is great.

I am a healthcare professional who took early retirement 10 years ago to care for my disabled wife. When I could no longer care for her at home, my wife decided she would like to be cared for in Harbour Rise nursing home and I'm so glad she did. Up to her death earlier this month, the care my wife received
was exemplary in every aspect. She was treated with the utmost care, respect, love and dignity throughout her stay and in her final days, she was very much at peace. I can now see why Harbour Rise is one of only a very few nursing homes, in the whole of the South West, to be rated "outstanding" by the Care Quality Commission. Should I ever need a nursing home in the future, I hope that there will be a place available for me at Harbour Rise.

My Mum is a resident at Harbour Rise as of this year, and we are extremely happy with the quality of care she is receiving. The rooms in the home are all nicely decorated and very comfortable, and the food and drink is high quality with lots of variation. The staff are all very friendly, my Mum loves
having a chat with them. Even though it has been a tricky time during COVID-19, the staff have managed to keep everyone safe and happy, with lots of activities - including VE Day celebrations and arts and crafts - and the quality of care has not suffered in any way.
Overall, we are really thrilled with the care Mum is receiving and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Harbour Rise.

It is an excellent care home the staff make everyone feel very welcome. They are kind and caring. It is a difficult decision where a loved one needs to reside but it is like a family home. I cannot fault it everyone goes that extra mile. Throughout lockdown, they have helped reassure us that mum is

Since taking up residence at Harbour Rise my Aunt is happier and healthier than I've seen her in years. The care she has been shown is exemplary, the owners and their staff truly care about their residents, encouraging them to participate and engage with activities and those around them. The regular
updates we get from the owners are a great comfort to our family, and the pictures of her smiling and engaging with the world are heartwarming. During this very trying and difficult time, the care and attention that has been shown can only be called outstanding. Well being and activities for all the residents have been thoughtful and enabling to ensure that health and mental stimulation is to the forefront. The pictures on the web site show
the happy smiling faces enjoying the varied activities that were provided. Knowing that our step mum is very happy in her safe and secure environment is a great comfort.

Julia Welch

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2021

Hello, I’m Julia! I joined Harbour Rise in August 2021, having previously managed an Outstanding-rated homecare company and then transitioning to managing Residential Care several years ago. I’m dedicated to providing high-quality care and enjoy taking a proactive approach in my work. I love spending time with the wonderful people at Harbour Rise, listening to their stories, and ensuring that their care aligns with their wishes and what matters most to them. Originally from a fishing town in Southern Ireland, I’ve always lived near the sea, and being by the water never fails to make me feel happy and calm, so working at Harbour Rise feels like a perfect fit. I love spending time with my husband, our three daughters, and our two wonderful grandchildren. I relax by reading, especially historical novels, and good mystery stories, and if I can listen to my book whilst walking along by the sea, then that is even better!

Cecile Edwards

Job Title: Director Joined: 2007

Although I was born and educated in France (Angers University) and Yorkshire (Hull University), I have now spent more time living in the UK than in France! I have been the joint director and owner of Harbour Rise since 2007, working very closely with my husband Mark, who was born in Marldon, Paignton. Working at Harbour Rise gives me a real sense of achievement as I love to be involved in a team of passionate and dedicated staff who give nothing but their best to our lovely residents.


I am also the very proud mother of three lovely and lively boys. Football seems to be the main thing we talk about at home, so in my spare time I love to go out with friends, go shopping and prepare a nice meal for all of us to enjoy! If I can, I also love to turn my phone off and get stuck into a great book!

Mark Edwards

Job Title: Director Joined: 2007

I was born in Paignton, and although I worked in finance in London for 20 years, I was delighted to return to Devon to raise my family of 3 boys and further develop and improve Harbour Rise.


We have owned Harbour Rise since 2007, and as well as caring for many wonderful residents, we have transformed the home from 22 to 44 bedrooms, and I believe there is not an inch that we have not renovated or improved! I love the warmth and atmosphere of the home. Although the care industry can be stressful, I enjoy seeing our staff and residents looking happy and thriving – this is our biggest achievement.


Outside of work, I love to be busy with water sports, cycling and of course football! Watching my sons play football is my favourite part of the weekend, as well as watching Arsenal and Plymouth Argyle.
I enjoy a glass of red wine in the winter and a pastis in the summer, love to spend time off in France, where I still try to improve my French.

Laura Harding

Job Title: Managerial Support Joined: 2008

Hello, I’m Laura! I have had the pleasure of working at Harbour Rise for the past 20 years, during which I’ve taken on a variety of roles, gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge along the way. For just over a year now, I’ve been providing managerial support, a role I find both engaging and rewarding.


Outside of work, I’m a proud mother of three wonderful children who bring immense joy to my life. Our family has recently grown with the addition of Bertie, our beautiful Cockapoo puppy, who has quickly become a beloved member of our household.


In my free time, I love spending quality moments with family and friends, going for walks, and diving into a good book.

Tash Wilkins

Job Title: Head of Care Joined: 1998

I started my career in 1998, working in the laundry at Harbour Rise. Over the years, I’ve taken on many different roles and eventually became Head of Care when Mark and Cecile took over the business in 2007. I’ve seen many changes to the home and feel privileged to have been part of its journey. One job I’ll never do, though, is drive the bus—driving’s not exactly my favourite hobby.


When I first started, I was young, free, and single. During my time here, I met and married my husband, Ken, and we now have one son who is an adult. I love getting to know our residents and their families, and I truly believe Harbour Rise is one big family.


Outside of work, I have a busy social life. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going on trips, and attending concerts—especially Take That. I also love going for walks, especially when there’s a nice pub at the end for a relaxing lunch!

Hayley Hamling

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2023

Hi, I’m Hayley. I joined Harbour Rise in January 2023. I previously worked for NRS Healthcare for 10 years. I love my role at Harbour Rise, overseeing everything Daycare – I am very proud of the relationships I have built up with our Daycare guests, their families and the professionals.


I have lived in Paignton for 27 years. I am a very busy Mum of 4 crazy children. In my spare time, I love to eat out, spend time with my family, kayak, swim and do coastal trekking with my youngest daughter, Lexi, who is very well known at Harbour Rise.

Lisa Screech

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2021

Hi, I’m Lisa. I joined Harbour Rise in August 2021, following 3 three years working in an admin role for the Community Neuro Rehab Team at Newton Abbot/Paignton hospital. I liaised with physios, OT’s, families, and patients following their strokes and other brain injuries. I really enjoy working at Harbour Rise as every day is completely different. I am lucky to meet so many interesting people, including our residents, their families, and my colleagues. Remembering everybody’s names at times is skilful!


I have played skittles for over 40 years in Newton Abbot, where I live and enjoy socialising with the team. I have a lovely husband and two children in their twenties, and I love spending time with my family and friends. I also love travelling, and over the next few years, my dream is to see the world. I am partial to chocolates and fine red wine!

Karmen

Karmen Pateman

Job Title: Office Coordinator Joined: 2023

Hello, my name is Karmen, and I joined Harbour Rise in 2023, bringing 15 years of administration and organisational experience with me. My favourite role within my job is meeting and chatting with the residents, finding out all about their lives and interests.


Outside of work, I have 4 beautiful children, a very lovely Husband and 2 dogs, all of whom keep me very busy. My weekends are mainly spent watching my 2 Sons play football, come rain or shine. When I do get some free time, I love to travel, eat Italian food and sip a nice glass of prosecco.
