Someone living with our definition of "mild dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Memory problems such as misplacing items and not be able to recall recent events (however, in some forms of dementia a person's memory may be unchanged)
- Difficulties thinking through problems and planning, making decisions
- Language and communication issues such as finding it difficult to recall the appropriate word in a conversation or following a conversation
- Poor orientation, getting lost in areas previously familiar to them
- Difficulty judging distances (more falls than usual)
- Changes in their normal mood including anxiety and depression
- In certain types of dementia, personality and behaviour changes may be present alongside or instead of issues with memory or concentration.
Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse
- Physical abuse

Overall Experience
Mum had been in care here for nearly 3 years. When she first went in she gained weight, ate better and was so well looked after for all her care and social needs that it was a huge load off my mind. Her health and mobility gradually decreased, as did her memory and cognitive ability but the staff dealt with this very professionally. After Christmas Mum (at the age of 95) decided she had had enough of life and pain and gradually slipped away, dying peacefully on 14th January. Throughout this time the home was in contact with me (I live some distance away) so that I always knew what was happening. All the staff on duty that day were with her when she died - they were her 'family' and three were able to attend her funeral - genuinely upset at her passing.

Overall Experience
My wife was admitted to Russel Green Care Home after falling three times while in care at her home. She was diagnosed with dementia and gradually became confined to bed. Her room is overlooking the gardens. She has a bed that is completely adjustable for her to see out of the window. She responds to music/tv etc. The staff are all wonderful, 100% dedicated, kind and caring both to her and myself.

Overall Experience
The care given to my stepmother (who has lost mental capacity and is bed bound) is outstanding. Her room has been furnished with sensory stimulating ornaments and whenever staff enter the room they make the effort to interact with her to provide additional stimulation. She is always treated with dignity and kept clean. The staff are always polite and friendly and swift to offer cups of coffee which is a lovely gesture when you have travelled a couple of hours to visit. A fantastic care home!

Overall Experience
We had to ask my mother to move into care. Although she had said she would have to go "somewhere" before winter, she was not happy but she gets muddled and tearful when things go wrong and can't cope. The staff are very helpful and caring and the manager is open to constructive criticism and always willing to listen and interact with residents and relatives.

Overall Experience
The care my Aunt has been receiving is exemplary. Staff at Russell Green frequently go above and beyond to take the greatest of care with her. All her needs are met with compassion, dignity and humour when needed. As a family, we are always kept fully updated on her health and welfare. I cannot put into words how grateful we all are as a family. I am always welcomed warmly on visits and offered refreshments. Thank you, Russell Green Care Home. You are amazing.
