Everyone is very kind and supportive to my dad. He is, I think, starting to settle in now.
We, as a family, are happy with everything so far.

Avery Mews has provided care for my mum for over four years now. The staff are caring and compassionate. It has a homely atmosphere and a genuine family feel to it. Staff have been supportive through difficult times. It is a very friendly environment and there is a good selection of activities for residents
to participate in.

Staff recently made it possible for my mum to attend a family Christmas party at my house. We are so grateful for the care my mum received on the day. Being able to have my mum at home again was such an amazing feeling. It meant that relatives visiting could see her in a more familiar setting and at Christmas, this was really special.

Reply from Tessa Matthews, Marketing at Barchester Spen Court Care HomeHi,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review about the care your mum receives at Avery Mews. Reading your comments about Mum being able to get home for a Christmas party is extremely heartwarming.

It was a very hard decision to have to put my mum into care. We looked at lots of places but as soon as I stepped into Avery Mews, it was like a hotel - beautiful. Amazing staff, so kind, nothing is too much trouble for them.
Great food, lovely room. I feel so happy my mum is being looked after by
the best. I could not ask for anything more. Thank you to you all so much.

The care home is excellent. The staff are always very welcoming and cheerful, extremely good with my brother - have laughs, giggles and 'pull his leg' which he enjoys.
They always appears to be some form of entertainment for the residents each week. Guests/visitors are always offered refreshments and
served with a smile.

Pleasant, clean surroundings, food is home cooked and staff from cleaners, cooks, carers and office staff are all welcoming. They know each resident and ensure their care and safety at all times.
Mum has struggled with her transition into full-time care but the staff have been very supportive in making
mum welcome and feel safe.

A team of 3 carers per shift rather than 2 makes a significant difference to both staff and residents.

The care received by my friend was very good especially in the first week after which she developed a water infection. This was no one's fault, however, my friend only had 1 shower during her 2-week stay. Personal hygiene did not seem a high priority. My friend then seemed confused and paranoid. The
management were wonderful when explaining these side effects.
Reply from Rebekah Saint, Marketing Executive at Barchester Spen Court Care HomeThank you for taking the time to review us, the team will be very pleased to hear you found the care at Avery Mews ‘very good’. We always try to respect the wishes and dignity of anyone staying in our home. The home manager, Sarah Sykes, has looked at your friend’s records which show she declined multiple offers for a shower, which the team felt needed to be respected. Again, thank you for your kind words about the management and as always if you wish to discuss any issues further, our home manager’s door is always open.

Avery Mews is a very caring homely place, giving a very safe environment. My Mum in Law is very happy. She is well looked after by staff who are genuinely kind and caring. Nothing is too much trouble. The home is very much home from home. It is a well designed attractive home with good facilities. There
are activities and outings. Lovely home cooked food and tasty cakes (mum's favourite bit). Avery was a stand out home when we were looking for the right place for Mum. It is not an easy thing to pass your loved ones into the care of others, but Avery was a very good choice. 1st Class!

I am so happy when I visit my sister to see she is happy and so well looked after. I feel Avery is the best place she could be now at nearly 90. She is now unable to look after herself and her husband of 62 years has sadly now passed away. As her dementia gets worse, it is sad to see her slipping away.
But, with the love and care given at Avery she is able to smile. She is having a quality of life now, which we never expected. We feel the lovely staff at Avery have given her that. They bring out something in her we thought was lost - thank you!

My wife has been in Avery Mews for just over 2 years and the care she gets is excellent.
The games and things the staff help her to participate in is very good. The choir on Thursday is top rate including a lot of fun with the two carers who run the choir. My wife is helped to join in with all the
activities going on. This helps to keep her happy which is very important to me. All in all a job well done by all the staff.

This was the first respite care I had arranged for my mother who suffers from dementia. On a visit to the home, I was impressed by the high standard of cleanliness and decor in the home. There were plenty of carers and cleaning staff on duty. The residents and their clothing were also very clean. I
was shown around the home and greeted warmly by the friendly and knowledgeable staff.

When the manager came to our home to carry out her assessment for my mother's care plan, she was very friendly and professional. She assured me my mother would be well looked after.

My mother has spent 10 happy days in respite. She has been extremely well cared for - kept scrupulously clean, laundry is done daily, assisted with all her care needs by warm and kind professionals. The staff were sorry to see my mum leave and she told me she had had a lovely time.

My dad became concerned for his care in his previous home and saw Avery Mews in the paper and asked me to get him a visit and moved. The manager was so helpful and organised a visit and dad liked the place so much. When a room came available the manager arranged the transfer as I live so far away. The
move went smoothly and he was soon settled in his new room. The care he received immediately made him more settled and he always had nice things to say about the staff! Although he didn't eat much, the food was 100% better. The whole environment was so much better and as I say he felt safe. Unfortunately, for my dad aged 96, his stay was shortlived due to his various ailments which suddenly took a turn for the worse. He was soon to pass away, but the staff took care of him so well in his final hours. My sister and I have been made to feel so welcome back at the home and I don't live near but my sister does and knows she will always be welcome. Dad missed out.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.686)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.686) out of 10 for Barchester Spen Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.686 for Barchester Spen Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (289 Excellents x 5) + (64 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (6 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 373 Ratings = 4.686
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Spen Court Care Home is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
