  • The Granby, Harrogate
The Granby offers elegance and style and is a place in which residents feel pampered and cared for. The home provides residential, nursing, and respite care.

The Granby has undergone a full refurbishment, the modernised home includes a welcoming reception area, lounge and bar area and stunning dining room. All rooms have been tastefully redecorated in a number of elegant themes. In addition to this, the home also has a café, wellbeing suite and a luxurious cinema that residents can enjoy.

The lounge at The Granby is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea and socialise as it looks out across the famous common, The Stray.

There is a superb collection of reading material including books, magazines and papers in the decadent library; now called Lord Byron’s library as this is where the famous bard wrote some of his literary works.

Residents can be treated to a new hairstyle in the hairdressing salon or even relaxing aromatherapy or reflexology sessions in the privacy of their own rooms.

There are attractive grounds in which to relax or take gentle exercise. For the more adventurous there is a seven-seater minibus equipped for wheelchair access which means residents can enjoy excursions both into Harrogate town centre and further afield. A range of recreational activities take place in the beautifully restored and original Crystal Ballroom.

The standard of accommodation and care afforded at The Granby is second to none, with every resident being actively encouraged to retain their independence in order that they lead as full a life as possible.

Beautiful building, bright and clean. Residents' rooms are light and spacious enough for wheelchair use. Food, hospitality and activities first class. Staff caring, efficient and friendly. Would definitely recommend it.

This is probably the only genuine review from a resident.
Where do I begin? Drinks get stolen by staff, and things go missing from the room. Beds not made properly, rooms not cleaned for days, no respect for your wishes of privacy. Overreach by management into your personal affairs, waiting 30 to 55
minutes for bell to get answered on average, staff not able to make a blended meal for peg users. Incompetency at every level.

A lovely home. Everywhere is decorated beautifully. Very welcoming and all of the staff are extremely helpful and kind. You are always made welcome when you visit. There are plenty of activities that the residents can do if they want to and regular visits from schools and different entertainers.
If you have any worries about your relative they always take it seriously and look into it. I’m also impressed with the number of drinks they are encouraged to have as I know how important it is to keep elderly people hydrated. There are lovely outdoor spaces when the weather is good and I'm impressed with the effort the staff put into taking out residents to the shop or just have a fun trip out.
It has taken a huge weight off my mind knowing that my dad is cared for and my visits to see him are now about enjoying his company.

The Granby is a substantial old building, which was converted into a care home and occupied a prominent position overlooking the grassland at the end of the town centre. It was refurbished/updated a few years ago and offers spacious accommodation with impressive public rooms. My mother was a resident
for over ten years until she died early this year, during this time she was well looked after by pleasant, friendly and caring staff, who were particularly kind and attentive when it was apparent her health was failing and showed great compassion when dealing with the sadness and emotion experienced at this difficult time when they could not have been kinder or more helpful and supportive.

My 90-year-old mum was admitted for end-of-life care in June this year. Thanks to the outstanding care of the staff, she has vastly improved physical, has gradually gained weight, and in general, is very different from when she arrived at the home. It has been a pleasure to visit Mum in this wonderful
environment, which I cannot praise highly enough. Thank you to all concerned in her ongoing care.

Although our mother's stay was short at The Granby, we couldn't have asked for better care or nursing. She was treated with dignity and respect at all times. The staff were very supportive and guided us through a very difficult time. Highly recommended.

Lovely home, I can express how grateful we are as a family for the love and care my mum has received since moving to The Granby. Everyone is so friendly from the receptionist, the manager, the carers, the housekeeping, activities and hostesses. The food looks amazing, my mum has never looked or felt
so well. Well done all of you.

Prior to my mother's admission to The Granby, we were told that the home supports each resident to have one visitor who can visit in all circumstances, including during periods of covid outbreaks within the home and periods of self-isolation. Despite this and after my mother arrived, I was told that
I did not meet the criteria to become an essential caregiver and I was not allowed to visit my mother for seven weeks. She was distraught. Her physical and mental wellbeing deteriorated significantly. I was alarmed by the poor standard of care, the lack of empathy and respect given to my mother and the absence of support, leadership and communication from management. That said, the reception staff and deputy manager were great. My mother (together with family support) decided to move to an alternative care home. Our concerns for her welfare were such that we moved her before the end of the notice period. Thankfully, she is now happy in the new home, where the environment is caring and supportive. The relief to us all is indescribable.

Since my mother moved to the Granby she has thrived. I don’t get to see her often so when I visited her recently I can honestly say, I was so pleased at how well she appeared, so different to when she moved in. The care home is lovely, the carers, management, activities and reception couldn’t fault
their kindness.

Myself and my whole family want to say (out loud) a huge thank you to you all and the team at The Granby for taking such fantastic care of Daf and through some very difficult times (lockdowns). Your patients, tolerance and devotion that you all do on a daily basis go beyond words. We wish you all the
very best in moving forward from a very difficult past couple of years.

A most friendly place. The nursing and care staff are kind, gentle and very understanding. During closure, due to covid, we had every confidence our mother was thoroughly cared for and looked after. The reception staff are most welcoming and efficient, keeping us updated and a mine of information. The
food is excellent with a new choice daily and well presented. For those able to join in, there are plenty of activities in which to participate. The home is spotless, airy, warm and cheerful. It takes a lot of patience to deal with the elderly and the staff here have it in spades. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.808)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.808) out of 10 for The Granby is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.808 for The Granby is calculated as follows: ( (239 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (11 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 255 Ratings = 4.808
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Granby is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
