  • The Granby, Harrogate
The Granby offers elegance and style and is a place in which residents feel pampered and cared for. The home provides residential, nursing, and respite care.

The Granby has undergone a full refurbishment, the modernised home includes a welcoming reception area, lounge and bar area and stunning dining room. All rooms have been tastefully redecorated in a number of elegant themes. In addition to this, the home also has a café, wellbeing suite and a luxurious cinema that residents can enjoy.

The lounge at The Granby is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea and socialise as it looks out across the famous common, The Stray.

There is a superb collection of reading material including books, magazines and papers in the decadent library; now called Lord Byron’s library as this is where the famous bard wrote some of his literary works.

Residents can be treated to a new hairstyle in the hairdressing salon or even relaxing aromatherapy or reflexology sessions in the privacy of their own rooms.

There are attractive grounds in which to relax or take gentle exercise. For the more adventurous there is a seven-seater minibus equipped for wheelchair access which means residents can enjoy excursions both into Harrogate town centre and further afield. A range of recreational activities take place in the beautifully restored and original Crystal Ballroom.

The standard of accommodation and care afforded at The Granby is second to none, with every resident being actively encouraged to retain their independence in order that they lead as full a life as possible.

My mother has lived at The Granby for a number of years and the standard of her personal care has generally been high, and always delivered with cheer and kindness. The care team have excelled themselves over the past four months during the pandemic keeping all the residents safe and secure and providing
the extra company and comfort needed in the absence of their loved ones.

I can only say how reassuring it is to know that our Mum is being cared for so well, especially in the present circumstances, the staff really care and it shows, nothing is too much trouble for them. The activities are great, Mum loved the recent Hawaiian garden party. Thanks to the lady who organised
our Zoom call. I really can't thank all of the staff enough for all their patience and hard work, which is carried out with love and understanding.
Reply from Michelle Poole, Home Manager at The GranbyThank you so much for your lovely feedback. The team do really care and they will be delighted to hear your comments about our care and activities at The Granby as am I. I'll pass on your feedback to the team.

After some hospital treatment, I came here for respite care. I found peace in the quiet and sunny aspect of my top floor bedroom with its wonderful view over Harrogate's Stray. Days later I was encouraged to have meals in the beautiful 'Willow' dining room, fully lit by chandeliers and decorated in
chinoiserie style. I enjoyed the vegetarian food provided. Not having to think about planning meals, their preparation and cleaning up afterwards was a great relief. Likewise, to have laundry taken away, washed and returned, sometimes within hours, was appreciated. The several interlocking lounges were all comfortable for relaxing in and tastefully decorated. The staff were flexible and happy to please and the interest groups were just starting up again with enthusiasm.

Whilst my mother was resident at The Granby, she was fortunate to have a beautifully appointed room facing a long stretch of a public park. It made an easy transition for her from independent living to being cared for. The transition was also assisted by the wonderful facilities and catering The Granby
offers, in such a beautiful environment. A home from home. As importantly, the kindness and care of staff and the overall friendliness shown to her made my siblings and I realise that we had made the right decision in moving her there. Never an easy decision for anyone. My wife and children referred to The Granby as Granny's hotel (much to my mother's amusement!). It was so lovely to visit her there.

We are so appreciative as, despite the current situation, special arrangements have been put in place by staff to allow us to see and speak to a family member within the care home via video chat to family members. These arrangements are set up through the kindness of staff. This says everything about
the home and, I feel, the individual care given to each resident. Thank you.

My mum has been at The Granby for nearly eight years and is extremely happy there. The staff are caring and helpful and since the covid-19 situation, they have gone above and beyond to ensure that we have contact with mum. The activities, entertainment and food at the home are excellent and any issues
that have been raised have been dealt with professionally. Thank you for taking care of my mum, especially during this very difficult time.
Reply from Olivia Shields, Marketing Assistant at The GranbyThank you, Julie, for your wonderful comments about The Granby. The care and wellbeing of every resident is always our number one priority and it is rewarding to have such positive feedback about how we are doing. Take care, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

A big thumbs up to all the staff at The Granby who do such a great job in sometimes very difficult circumstances! My dad is treated with such kindness and care, and nothing is too much trouble for them! It's great to see the relationship they have built with him and its lovely to have a chat and an
update with them when I go to visit! Would be happy to recommend The Granby just on the merits of the staff alone!

I have always found the staff friendly, co-operative and eager to help.
They show concern and real care for the welfare of residents. They are friendly and know my name, even though I am only a visitor.
These people do a splendid job under difficult circumstances sometimes. They should be proud.
Perhaps the catering could be more imaginative - residents need tempting to improve appetite!
Reply from Michelle Poole, Home Manager at The GranbyGlad to hear that you find the team caring and friendly. We aim to provide the best care possible and we are very proud of our team.
Our menus are varied and full of locally sourced high quality ingredients. Our menus change daily offering seasonally balanced dishes. More about our dining is on our website.

From the moment that we first enquired about respite care for Mum, it was our first foray into care provision and we weren't sure what to expect. The team at The Granby could not have been more helpful. They went out of their way to support and assist us and mum could not have been looked after any
better during her week there.
The staff are warm and friendly with both guests and relatives and the facilities are of hotel standards. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Granby.

My elderly father-in-law was a resident for 2 weeks after breaking his hip, in between being discharged from hospital and returning home. It was an ideal step along the road to recovery, allowing him to build up his confidence, strength and independence after spending 2 months in hospital. By the time
he left, he was able to use his zimmer frame and walk over 100m using it. He was very well looked after by the care staff and was very pleased with his choice to stay there. The administration and organisation of his stay by the care home management were excellent and we felt we had been given a personal and professional service by them. We can thoroughly recommend it.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.875)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.875) out of 10 for The Granby is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.875 for The Granby is calculated as follows: ( (254 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 279 Ratings = 4.875
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Granby is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
