  • The Granby, Harrogate
The Granby offers elegance and style and is a place in which residents feel pampered and cared for. The home provides residential, nursing, and respite care.

The Granby has undergone a full refurbishment, the modernised home includes a welcoming reception area, lounge and bar area and stunning dining room. All rooms have been tastefully redecorated in a number of elegant themes. In addition to this, the home also has a café, wellbeing suite and a luxurious cinema that residents can enjoy.

The lounge at The Granby is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea and socialise as it looks out across the famous common, The Stray.

There is a superb collection of reading material including books, magazines and papers in the decadent library; now called Lord Byron’s library as this is where the famous bard wrote some of his literary works.

Residents can be treated to a new hairstyle in the hairdressing salon or even relaxing aromatherapy or reflexology sessions in the privacy of their own rooms.

There are attractive grounds in which to relax or take gentle exercise. For the more adventurous there is a seven-seater minibus equipped for wheelchair access which means residents can enjoy excursions both into Harrogate town centre and further afield. A range of recreational activities take place in the beautifully restored and original Crystal Ballroom.

The standard of accommodation and care afforded at The Granby is second to none, with every resident being actively encouraged to retain their independence in order that they lead as full a life as possible.

My father was resident for four and a half years until his death in October 2019. He has really enjoyed life at The Granby and the family never regretted our decision for him to move there. The building is beautiful, well cared for, in an attractive location. The staff are excellent and their genuine
care contributed greatly to my father's happiness even though they are somewhat overworked. Stimulating and varied program of activities. Visitors are made welcome and can share meals and most activities with residents. The standard of food has varied but most recently has been good.
Special praise is due for the end of life care my father received. He remained in his own room surrounded by family and friends, and the support and care of staff who he knew well, backed up by nursing support. I personally experienced the kindness of staff after his death when I stayed for several days.
Only negative comment - frequent changes of management so not always knowing who to speak to about issues.

My dad spent just over two weeks in The Granby for end of life care passing away on 27th September 2019. Everyone from management, admin staff, nurses, carers, looked after dad with great care and consideration and made a difficult time so much easier for the family. The home is beautifully decorated
from the lounges to the rooms and it has a very welcoming atmosphere throughout. The only slight issue was the locum nurses who were a little unsure when asked about dads meds etc but I know the manager and team are aware of this and I am confident this will be rectified and of course, is somewhat out of management control until brought to their attention.
Reply from Rachel Cooney, Marketing Administrator at The GranbyThank you for the review. Sorry to hear about the death of your Dad. It’s good to hear that during this difficult time we offered great care and helped to make things a little easier. We have recently welcomed two new experienced permanent nurses to our team and always aim to minimise the use of any locum or agency nurses. It is great to hear that you found the atmosphere welcoming and that you consider us an excellent home. Thank you again for reviewing our home and we will pass on your kind comments to our team.

My grandad spent his final weeks being cared for at the Granby care home. The care both he and my family received was excellent. The nurses and carers cared for him in such a loving and respectful way, they became like family to us even for the short time he was there. At the final stages and end of
life, we were overwhelmed by the love that was shown and for this, we are so grateful. The perfect environment for end of life.

My initial enquiry was very positive and encouraging. We brought my mother in law in for respite care in late August. We wanted a high standard for her and we have certainly received it. I have made a few enquiries to The Granby whilst having been away and have been reassured greatly on each occasion.
Our own family and friends have visited themselves and have been impressed with the quality of the residence and the staff looking after our special relative. Bringing our mother into a care home is a big decision, even for respite, but we have been greatly relieved in doing so and our consciences greatly relaxed at the same time. Highly recommended.
Reply from Fiona Adamson, BDM at The GranbyThank you for the lovely review. We are really pleased that we have been able to make your mother-in-law's stay with us a happy and reassuring one. We will keep you updated on our activity programme and look forward to welcoming you to our home in the future.

The food was very good with a wide selection to choose from. The whole accommodation was welcoming and to high standards of decoration and cleanliness.

All the staff at the Granby are always friendly and polite. I could not fault the care my mother received in the 2.8 years she was there. It was clear that the carers liked my mother and she, in turn, liked them. Whenever they were passing her room, they popped in to say hello and always made time to
answer any questions the family may have had. If they didn’t know the answer they would find someone who did. It wasn’t just the care that is very good. The decor of the Granby is very elegant, bright and welcoming and looked more like a hotel than a care home. I would recommend it to friends and family without hesitation.

Over the recent couple of months 2 friends (both had the Parkinson's condition), have passed away whilst residents of the Granby Residential Home due to unrelated conditions they had! Although extremely sad and unexpected (in both cases) - the care, attention, consideration and understanding shown by
the staff concerned to them, us friends and the relatives of both families, (for which they are extremely grateful) has been impressive and showed great sensitivity!
Such compassion can't be trained into staff but is clearly down to the quality staff employed and I have no hesitation in recommending the home.

As this was my third stay at The Granby which speaks for itself. As ususal, I was greeted warmly and taken care of immediately. The staff were kind and welcoming. The carers helpful and excellent choice of food. I will always feel happy about coming to stay at The Granby. It's like my second home since
I had my stroke two years ago. I have always said the local hospital saved my life but The Granby saved my sanity.

The Granby is a wonderful place set apart by a team dedicated to supporting the residents.
Mum spent 18 months enjoying her airy room laid out with her own furniture, ornaments and photographs.
A special pleasure was a stroll to the coffee lounge to pick a cake and choose between sitting in her room
or in the calm Byron Library.
The community environment of the stylish dining room with its elegant table service provided a daily focal point and opportunity to socialise with the other residents.
The activity team provided opportunities for mental and physical exercise in a social setting using gentle persuasion for Mum to join in.
Throughout her stay, the carers took time to get to know and understand Mum and she felt secure and safe at a time of great change in her life.
The carers were always aware of her needs and tailored her care helping with personal care while being friendly and engaging with her as a person.
Mum appreciated the team’s warmth, compassion and respect for her dignity.

I'm impressed by all aspects of the home. The staff are cheerful - always have time for a quick word or update on Mum's activities and issues - very caring helping her dress every day in beautifully co-ordinated outfits with earrings and necklaces I haven't seen for years - it is great to see her looking
good and feeling smart - even powder and lipstick! They are equally patient and kind helping with frequent toilet trips!
The building is lovely - feels like a happy hotel - Mum is particularly fond of the ballroom with beautiful chandeliers where concerts are held.
Activities Ladies plan a wide range of entertainments - we have an amazing email link via the Magic Moments club where we can correspond securely with mum which is a great way of keeping in touch from a distance sending photos and messages which she is shown on the iPad - her replies are typed for her, that she is just off to the hairdressers, or has been sitting in the sun with other ladies and appropriate photos uploaded!

We used the Granby for respite care for my mother. The staff were welcoming and friendly and throughout the duration of the stay, nothing was too much trouble. Her bed room was bright/ warm comfortable and spotlessly clean. Food was good and served either in her room or dining room. My mother had no
complaints and ate very well during her stay. We especially loved the coffee shop where residents and family could go and sit and enjoy free drinks and cakes. A lovely space to sit and relax and look out over the Stray.
There are lots of areas to be able to go and relax either quietly on your own should you want to read the papers or books or if you wish company, the main lounge in the reception area is a great meeting place for residents. There were plenty of activities arranged and my mother joined in most of them, she especially enjoyed the cinema which is on site.
I was able to go away safe in the knowledge that my mother was being well cared for.
Thank you to the whole Granby team.

My father's care was of the very best, all of the staff were amazing, there are not enough words I can find to say thank you to them all, it’s for mainly this reason why I would recommend The Granby care home to others. for this. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.875)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.875) out of 10 for The Granby is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.875 for The Granby is calculated as follows: ( (254 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 279 Ratings = 4.875
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Granby is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
