  • The Granby, Harrogate
The Granby offers elegance and style and is a place in which residents feel pampered and cared for. The home provides residential, nursing, and respite care.

The Granby has undergone a full refurbishment, the modernised home includes a welcoming reception area, lounge and bar area and stunning dining room. All rooms have been tastefully redecorated in a number of elegant themes. In addition to this, the home also has a café, wellbeing suite and a luxurious cinema that residents can enjoy.

The lounge at The Granby is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea and socialise as it looks out across the famous common, The Stray.

There is a superb collection of reading material including books, magazines and papers in the decadent library; now called Lord Byron’s library as this is where the famous bard wrote some of his literary works.

Residents can be treated to a new hairstyle in the hairdressing salon or even relaxing aromatherapy or reflexology sessions in the privacy of their own rooms.

There are attractive grounds in which to relax or take gentle exercise. For the more adventurous there is a seven-seater minibus equipped for wheelchair access which means residents can enjoy excursions both into Harrogate town centre and further afield. A range of recreational activities take place in the beautifully restored and original Crystal Ballroom.

The standard of accommodation and care afforded at The Granby is second to none, with every resident being actively encouraged to retain their independence in order that they lead as full a life as possible.

The home has been excellent in its procedures for opening up visiting again to residents. Reception and activities staff have well co-ordinated routines enabling visitors and residents to feel and stay safe. Activities staff have done an amazing job in opening up visiting opportunities at the same time
as maintaining Zoom meeting contact and still running a wide range of entertaining and stimulating in-house events for residents.

Really lovely staff, kind and thoughtful. It’s been a tough year for everyone, and they have managed to keep everyone safe during COVID, can’t thank them enough. My family have been so happy that when they visited, she was happy and well cared for.

Mum has needed very physical and mental care since entering the home 5-years ago. Despite manager variations, the carers who have managed Mum over the last 5-years have been nothing but angels. It’s so obvious how hard they work, along with the social activities staff, but they still manage this with
a smile on their face, and nothing is ever too much or moaned about. Mum and her room are always neat, Mums physical needs are always seen to. Just this week, I was allowed to visit, and this coincided with Mums 100th birthday but the manager, carers and activities staff all managed to make it special for Mum. Goodness knows how far beyond the 100 Mum will get, but her large family is happy in the knowledge she is in the very best care she can be.
Thank you to them all, from all of us.

My Mother, who has dementia and is in her mid-nineties, has been a resident of The Granby for over two years now. She has been so well cared for by the loving, practical and considerate staff, and I cannot praise them highly enough. There is constant and regular communication in these difficult times,
and whenever I see her in photos, on the website and on Zoom, she is well dressed, and looks settled and happy. Thank you to all the staff. I look forward to actually being able to see them in the near future.

My grandmother went to The Granby after an unpleasant stay in hospital. Everyone was so very kind and caring. I could not visit myself, so I was able to FaceTime. It was clear that my grandmother felt safe and cared for. This made us all feel reassured that she was getting the best care possible in
her final days. I am truly thankful for the kindness shown to us all as a family during this very difficult time.

My mother came from hospital to The Granby for end of life care. Although she was only at The Granby for a few weeks, her care was outstanding. What made the difference was the time the members of the team - nurses and carers - gave to talking and listening to my mother as well as attending to her needs.
My mother was a dignified elegant lady and they respected that. She remained an individual in her own right to the very end. Likewise, the kindness they showed me through those difficult weeks was very much appreciated. It is a sad time but I know that she was in the right place for those last few weeks. Thank you.

From my initial phone call from The Granby for my Mum's pre-admission assessment at the end of September, the staff have offered personal care in a relaxed, unrushed manner. Nothing is too much trouble. All the staff have been kind and considerate while being clear about expectations, current regulations
and guidelines. Including, but not solely about COVID-19 regulations and guidelines. My Mum often said, "I feel like royalty here."
During her initial 14 days of isolation, due to COVID guidelines, the manager and staff were very understanding and obliging, encouraging daily phone calls for updates and helping Mum to charge and use her own mobile phone to keep in contact. Under the extreme pressures that COVID has brought to care homes across the UK, The Granby staff have remained calm and caring, showing kindness in everything they do and say.
A highlight for my Mum was being able to dress up and watch her grandson's wedding on her computer tablet, facilitated by care staff at The Granby.

The level of care and kindness shown to my Nan has been exceptional. The home has kept the residents safe through these very difficult times. The Manager has done an amazing job and this can be seen in the results. The activity team have kept my Nan happy and share many photos which we all love as a
family. I can not thank the staff enough for all they have done and are doing.

My mum arrived at Granby in December 2019. She was recovering from a hip operation and had, over the previous 6 months, experienced some isolation and disorientation. As a family, we visited her at home 2-3 times a week. However, these visits were not enough to create a happy home environment for her.
Despite initial misgivings about her moving to a care home from both her and us, Granby has been the best decision we could have made for her. The staff and management are first class, the facilities excellent and the team who engage with the residents to keep them occupied and entertained could not work harder. My Mum has gone from a frail old lady to an active engaged resident with a happy future ahead of her. Throughout the threat of the pandemic, The Granby has remained strong and resilient in their care of the residents. It has been heartbreaking not to have seen my Mum face to face for 6 months, but we have stayed in touch thanks to technology. Mum is safe and well. Thanks, Granby team.

We booked and paid for 2 weeks' respite care in The Granby but left after 5 days. We had to stay in our room from 11.30 Monday, July 6th to Thursday, July 9th at about 3 pm to confirm that we were COVID free - rather a tedious ordeal. We expected to be able to use the garden but this didn't seem possible.
On arrival, we were welcomed to a drink of coffee but surprised to find there was no decaff available. Also, a request for tonic water on Saturday evening (taken daily at home for cramps) was unavailable. I'm sure that if we had been permanent residents we would have solved these issues as all the staff were very helpful, but overall we were very disappointed with our stay.
Reply from Olivia Shields, Marketing Assistant at The GranbyWe are sorry to hear that you were not fully satisfied with your stay at The Granby. We are, at this present time, bound by government guidance on isolation and quarantining and although this is very challenging for all concerned, we must adhere to the guidance in order to keep our residents, team and members of the public safe and well.
We aim to provide for the needs of our residents as much as possible and so we apologise that this wasn’t the case for you. Our Home Manager has contacted you to discuss your concerns and so we hope that you feel they have been addressed in a positive way. We thank you for your feedback as this always helps us to improve our service.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.875)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.875) out of 10 for The Granby is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.875 for The Granby is calculated as follows: ( (254 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 279 Ratings = 4.875
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Granby is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
