St John’s House Residential Care Home in Kirk Hammerton, near York provides residential care for up to 34 residents in a beautiful Tudor style building dating back to 1910. This includes long-term, short-term and respite care.

The home is rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) (February 2019).

All the rooms are en-suite and residents can also access several lounges, dining rooms and reception rooms, as well as two acres of beautiful country grounds.

The house provides a full programme of activities according to the wishes and interests of the residents. These range from exercise and craft classes through to day trips and evening and weekend outings.

My lovely Mum has been at St John's for 3 years now. She still wishes she could be in her own home and we still feel sad that she can't be, but we know she is in a safe and caring environment and I don't think we could ever find a better place for her.
The staff are so lovely. They are always cheerful
and helpful and kind. The home is bright and clean and the gardens are beautiful. The layout means that Mum can see people coming and going as well as enjoy the scenery.
The current leadership team are doing a great job and we know that we can raise any concerns with them and that they will listen and respond appropriately.
Mum loves music and singing. We originally looked at St John's because it once had the oldest choir (in a Book of World Records)! If there was anything we could change it would be to start another choir!

Everybody would prefer to live independently in their own home but If I had to live in a Care Home I would choose to live at St John's.
When visiting my mother during the past year I have observed the staff to be well-led, professional, and very caring. The rooms and other parts of the Home are comfortable
and always very clean; the food looks delicious, nutritious, and plentiful. Visitors are welcomed and the staff are always very approachable. There are generally daily activities arranged for residents who wish to participate. The staff works very hard to maintain the excellent standard it has achieved.

My mother has been a resident at St John's Care Home for well over six years. I have visited regularly at different times and found the staff very pleasant and helpful. My mother is certainly content and well cared for. The home is spotless and the food is good. I am very pleased with the care my mother
has received.

Mum has been a resident at St John's for a year now and is very happy. Everywhere is spotlessly clean and the grounds are beautifully tended. All the staff genuinely care for the residents and are always happy to help in any way they can. Mum particularly enjoys the daily activities both exercise and

Friendly and caring staff in a warm and welcoming home from home. The care that Mum receives is exemplary - not only from the front-of-house staff but from everyone on the team - housekeeping, catering, maintenance, etc. Nothing is too much trouble. We are delighted that we found such a safe and beautiful
home. The garden and patio are a delight which Mum appreciates.

Very impressed with the care home. Set on beautiful grounds, and elegantly decorated, it was the perfect setting for my auntie's respite.
Her room was lovely with a separate living room overlooking the grounds.
The staff were wonderful, very caring and friendly, with my auntie giving her reassurance
cuddles as she struggled at first being away from home. I met the head chef she told me all the food was made from scratch the residents enjoy 3 meals a day plus coffee and cakes all homemade, plus sandwiches for supper if they are still hungry!
My auntie also wanders on a night, the home had clever devices that alerted the staff when she started wandering. The staff are obviously happy in their jobs, which is apparent in the way they look after the residents. They also provide daily activities, such as bingo, quizzes and exercises.
I would have no hesitation in recommending St Johns and if my auntie needs any other respite I would certainly rebook.

St John's House is a well-run nursing home.
Always clean and tidy (rooms, eating areas, bathrooms and sitting areas).
Staff are amazing, they are friendly, and nothing is too much bother.
Gardens and outside areas are well-kept.
All residents seem happy and content and feel like they are at
home.

This was my first visit to St John's for a week’s respite care. I had a very good experience and will be very happy to stay again in the future. The home was very comfortable and the staff did everything they could to make my stay an enjoyable one. The food was good and the activities were excellent.
It was especially nice to be able join the other residents for their Christmas lunch. The home is surrounded by lovely gardens which I look forward to seeing more of in the better weather. Although the lift was out of order during my stay, the staff made sure that this did not affect me in any way. I returned home with a greater feeling of independence as I felt safe and secure walking longer distances than I am able to do in my bungalow. This positive outcome was unexpected but very welcome.

My mother was a resident at St John's House for three and a half years to the end of October 2023. The love, care and respect that everyone gave to Mum was exceptional. She was very happy there and it’s a very happy place. They showed the family great care too. They kept us very well informed with regular
social media updates. The carers always seem to have time to talk and just keep an eye on things. Mum enjoyed the activities, trips out and great food. The room was comfortable and clean.
I cannot recommend St John’s House too highly. It’s a fabulous place and we have been delighted to be associated with it.

As this was my first experience of "care home life", I was a bit apprehensive. However, I need not have worried. The staff are very friendly and supportive, providing help where needed while also encouraging independence. Breakfast was usually taken in my room, and other meals were in one of the several
dining rooms. The food was excellent. There were several lounges and seating areas as well as lovely gardens outside. The staff organised activities too - chairs, carpet bowls, and sometimes a quiz. Since it was Coronation time, we had a party! In conclusion - all good.

My mother has been a resident of St John's for nearly three years now. She regularly comments on how kind the staff are. Mum is happy, warm and comfortable and enjoys her meals. A wide variety of activities are on offer to residents if they wish to take part.

Fantastic! My father has recently been at St John's for two weeks respite care. The whole experience was very positive. All the staff were very welcoming and a great deal of effort was put into making him feel part of the home. He was included in all the extra Christmas festivities, including a meal
out at the local pub, alongside all the regular activities, such as quizzes, indoor bowls, exercise classes and much more. Similarly, the standard of care was very good and Dad particularly enjoyed the food too. Many, many thanks to all at St John's, you're doing an amazing job.

This care home puts a whole new meaning on the word care. My father-in-law was treated with so much love, respect and care, so much above the norm. He was welcomed with warmth. I cannot put into words the security it gave us all that he was in such a safe and caring place, getting all the care and more

I first came to St John's as a permanent resident in October 2021 after two periods of respite care. I was immediately impressed with the cleanliness of the home and the friendliness of the staff and residents. The food is quite nice, with a good menu choice. My room is excellent, with pleasant furnishings
and a comfortable bed. It is always kept very clean. Many of the room has a lovely lookout, and the gardens are well-maintained. The staff are wonderful, management too. Activities are super.

Staff are very personable, friendly and attentive to my mum's needs.
All residents are called, by all staff, by their first name, which I find nice.
I feel that my mum is in a very safe environment and cared for whilst providing company and activities.
