St John’s House Residential Care Home in Kirk Hammerton, near York provides residential care for up to 34 residents in a beautiful Tudor style building dating back to 1910. This includes long-term, short-term and respite care.

The home is rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) (February 2019).

All the rooms are en-suite and residents can also access several lounges, dining rooms and reception rooms, as well as two acres of beautiful country grounds.

The house provides a full programme of activities according to the wishes and interests of the residents. These range from exercise and craft classes through to day trips and evening and weekend outings.

My 99 year old mother has lived here for nearly 3 years and she is very happy here, which is a great relief to us! Every time we visit, it is clean and tidy. The staff are excellent and it feels very homely.


Mum is too old to do many activities now but there are plenty arranged. She is also too old

to fill this in herself. Who knows, I may end up here myself!

Placing my father in a care home was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I looked at several homes before finally finding St John's and everyone at the home made it so much easier.
It is a beautiful home. The staff are bright, caring and attentive, both to my father and myself.

It gives me great peace of mind knowing that when my husband and I go on holiday, my mum can go and be cared for at St John's House. They provide a safe, secure place for her while we are away and she enjoys the activities

St John's is very caring, clean and stimulating. The rooms are ensuite and visited by staff several times a day.
Activities are good. Medical services and personal services are provided by other parties and are good. Occasional days out for suitable residents are organised. Food looks good, wide choice.

A year ago when my mother was no longer able to live alone, I viewed many care homes in the area. St John's House stood out. It was an excellent choice and mum is very happy there. The carers are fantastic, thoughtful, considerate and the quality of the food, buildings and grounds is very high. There
are activities every day. Moving a loved one to a care home is very difficult for all involved, in the event, this was made a lot less stressful by the approach of the staff at St John's House. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

My mother was a resident at St. John's House for just under a year until her death on July 1st. She spent the last few weeks receiving 'end of life' care in her own room supported by the staff, district nurses and doctors.
I have nothing but admiration and respect for everyone involved in the care
of my mother. She was treated with dignity and compassion in what was for me an extremely distressing time.

I stayed at St. John's House for respite care in June 2017. The words I would use to describe my reception are "welcoming" and "friendly" to which I would add "caring" throughout my time there. I cannot speak too highly of the attitude of all the staff or of the trouble they took to look after myself
and all the other residents. It was my 92nd birthday while I was there and I was given card and cake.
The house itself and the resident's rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean.
The standards of St. John's can be judged by one example - they use linen table napkins!

My father spent 10 days at St John's and everything was as good as we could have possibly hoped for. St John's is a lovely house in a quiet rural setting, overlooking a delightful garden. The room standard, decor and cleanliness were immaculate and on arrival, it's clear from the other residents that
they are happy and well cared for. The food was interesting and varied and communal activities were arranged. Above all, the staff were fabulous and all of them took the time to chat and happily integrate with the residents, giving a wonderful warm home atmosphere.

I went around looking at quite a few homes before I was lucky enough to find St John's House. I knew as soon as I walked through the door that I had found the right one for my mum. The friendliness and warmth of the staff was lovely, made me feel really welcome and happy to answer all my questions.
I also spoke with one of the current residents and her daughter, they were both really happy and couldn't recommend the home enough. My decision made and when I first took my mum, you can imagine how anxious she was, that disappeared very quickly when she was welcomed with open arms, a cup of tea and a biscuit. My fear of leaving her left me at the door. She is really thriving and would recommend the home to anyone who is having to make that tough decision for one of their loved ones.

A very caring home, head and shoulders above other homes we visited.
The emphasis from the start was what is best for dad.
Staff were caring and sensitive.

We come to visit grandma. There is always a fantastic, friendly atmosphere with lots to do. Brilliant staff always happy to help. There are numerous family activity days which are great for residents and their families.

This was mums first experience of respite care, she was made by all the staff to feel welcome. When I came to pick her up she was smiling and laughing and introduced me to her new friends that she had made. She is looking forward to her next respite visit.

I visited St Johns House with my brother to see a close friend, the staff made us welcome and gave us tea, very polite. The room was immaculately clean and our friend loves it in there. She said it is home from home.
