I have felt very reassured during the difficult times, when Covid-19 was gripping the nation, that my husband was in competent and safe hands at Cold Springs Park Care Home, Penrith.
Now restrictions are lifting and activities can resume, I am sure everyone will benefit from a more open home.
All
the staff take good, genuine care of my husband and keep me informed of his condition and needs.

As a family we have experienced a difficult year - Dad is now a resident at Cold Springs Park Care Home in Penrith and we are so happy with the support and care given. We have been on a huge learning curve and the staff at Cold Springs, in particular the manager of the unit, have been supportive and
understanding - nothing ever seems to be a problem and always goes above and beyond to make sure we are involved with all decisions. We know that Dad is safe and well looked after. The home is very clean and I know a complete decorative overhaul has just taken place this year. From the pictures, they have supplied the rooms look elegant, comfortable and extremely welcoming.

From joining Cold Springs Park Care Home in September 2018, we have never ceased to be very pleasantly surprised by the overall standards of care, cleanliness, inclusivity and activities displayed by all members of staff - from housekeeping to management.
The facilities are well-maintained (and recently
refurbished). All rooms seem to be of sufficient size to be simultaneously cosy and spacious.
Within days of her arrival, all staff made the connection between my mother and us, referring to us by name and remembering our drinks preferences.
Activities are inclusive and made up of a good balance of physical, creative and mentally stimulating.
Also to be commended was the presence of one of the (off-duty) admin members on Christmas Day - with her daughter - to ensure that none of the residents was unvisited on the day. No less appreciated was the presence of the same member and manager at my mother's funeral.
We cannot thank you enough for the exemplary care, help and support you all displayed.

I have a friend who is in Cold Springs Park. I am unable to visit as I live far away. The staff have been very accommodating with my phone calls and Skype calls. My friend is very happy and has come on in leaps and bounds since going into Cold Springs Park. She has joined in with activities and even
when speaking to her on the phone and seeing her on Skype I can see a vast improvement in her. She says it's just like staying in a hotel.

My mother is very happy in Cold Springs Park, she would like more activities but recognises that Covid has affected the staff's abilities to provide activities. She has an excellent relationship with staff members who show her great kindness and care for her needs. My mothers main/only complaint is
that the food can often be poor and I am concerned that she doesn't eat a well balanced diet.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Cold Springs Park Care HomeAt Cold Springs Park we are providing activities along with visiting. Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we have been unable to have outside entertainment but our Wellbeing Team have been providing activities within the home. The activities have included quizzes, daily exercise, crafts and gardening. Themed days are also enjoyed by both Residents and staff. Recent themes have included Kindness day, Chinese New Year, Burns night, Queens Birthday and St George’s Day. Our Wellbeing Co-ordinators are always open to suggestions for new things to do. We provide hot meals at breakfast, lunch and tea, but we are happy to accommodate hot meals at other times if requested. We also provide snacks and drinks throughout the day. We endeavour to meet Residents needs and wishes and the Catering Team are happy to provide alternatives as requested.

My mother is happy in Cold Springs, they are always so helpful when I ring up and if they've got time, they take the phone to her so she can hear my voice, even though she can't say much. I feel they always keep me informed on everything and always seem cheerful to the residents even though having worked
in a care home myself, I know it's not easy.

My husband was admitted to Cold Springs Park last year and has settled well at the home, thanks to the experienced and committed staff. Though visits have of course been restricted, the standards of care and support have been excellent during this very difficult time.

The manager and staff of Cold Springs have done a great job of keeping our relatives safe and well around very difficult times with Covid19. I am very grateful that my mum has remained well. Staff have great empathy and understand the difficulties and upset caused by Covid restrictions and have done
their best to facilitate successful communication.

When Mum first became a resident at the home, the family was apprehensive about how it would work for her, however, we need not have worried - the standard of care and friendliness is excellent and Mum could not be anywhere better. The staff have been particularly good during COVID by taking all precautions
possible to stay virus-free. Now that some limited visiting is possible, they are doing everything possible to keep residents safe as well as making visits as pleasant as possible. We could not ask for more.

Cold Springs Park has a clean and well-maintained appearance, I find the management approachable and they appear to say all the right things. However, the standard of the care given to my mother-in-law is varied and the attitude of some of the staff leaves a lot to be desired. She informs me that the
quality of the food is inconsistent which is concerning as she needs to keep her weight up.
My greatest worry, however, is the number of confused residents that appear to wander the "residential" care home clearly suffering from dementia and many unable to converse. My mother-in-law has noticed this and does find it upsetting at times. On the whole, the care given is adequate but it is not somewhere I would choose for my mother-in-law were we to have this choice again. I would say, however, when asked about moving she says she does not want to move to another care home.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Cold Springs Park Care HomeThank you for taking the time to complete a review for Cold Springs Park and we are very sorry to hear that the standards of care experienced by your Mother-in-law is varied and that the attitude of some colleagues is not as expected. We will share your feedback with our team and reflect on the concerns raised and reiterate our expectations of colleagues to have a professional and kind approach to all they do.
We would be delighted to complete a full review with your Mother-in-law to discuss the worries she has in regards to residents living in the same community and will strive to ease her concerns and discuss her care plan to resolve as many worries as we can. We can also meet with her and you to review the type of food she enjoys with our chef and hospitality specialist to assist to offer her a menu which she will be happier with and which will meet her nutritional needs.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Home Manager Jacqui Johnstone who can arrange this for you.

Visited every Friday (almost) for 11 months, bringing Holy Communion to residents. We have always been made welcome by all staff and management. Where ever possible a quiet area has been found for our short service. Residents appeared happy and well looked after. We have been invited to visit on other
days, but to date, that has bot been possible. One particular staff member has been outstanding in putting our visits in the diary and arranging/bringing residents to the service.

I wish to record my appreciation for the wonderful care and support my husband and I have received from the managers, carers and cleaning staff at Spring Lakes during the last 18 months - where I have always been received and welcomed with a smile and been listened to.
More especially during the time
my husband spent in hospital before his death - their concern and willingness to accommodate my wishes for his end of life support at Spring Lakes was a great help to me at a difficult time.
Whilst it wasn't to be, they have made my withdrawal from this lovely 'family' gentle and supportive, leaving me with happy memories that will last.

Gran has just recently become a resident at Cold Springs. Right from the start, she has been treated very well and she receives all the attention she requires. The staff are very supportive and treat her with great compassion and dignity. The facilities at Cold Springs are all that Gran requires and
it is great for her to be surrounded by people after spending years on her own.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.355)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.355) out of 10 for Cold Springs Park Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.355 for Cold Springs Park Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (175 Excellents x 5) + (54 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 265 Ratings = 4.355
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cold Springs Park Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
