I would say my mum is looked after well. I have no other care homes to compare Barleycroft to but in my opinion, it is run fairly well and any suggestions we make are certainly looked into and the staff are generally always helpful.

This care home is seriously lacking staff. My mother usually waits 5-6 hours in between personal care. There are no real activities that cater for the residents. The meals are all the same, very little variety. Some of the carers are very good, others are only there to get a pay cheque! There is no
help gaining services through the GP like they say, trying to deal with the NHS. The home sometimes smells of urine etc. If I had a choice I would not have my mother here. It is due another inspection by the CQC.

My mum came to the home in May 2018 as unable to care for herself with help of 4 times daily carers, she started as respite and after 10 days was accepted as a permanent resident (self-funding).
The home is much better than expected and all the staff very nice and pleasant.
Rooms ensuite and very
clean. Food standard is excellent. The carers/nurses are excellent and not only attend all my mum's needs, very friendly and talking and nothing is too much trouble.

My mum came to Barleycroft in May and since that time, she has been looked after with nothing but care and kindness. Although her mobility is still poor, her general health seems to have improved by good food and medication being given regularly.
Although at times she can be rude and cantankerous,
the staff always treat her with patience and kindness. My only grouse is I think the gardens and grounds could be tended more regularly and in need of some TLC.

My review is that I find the home very nice, staff very pleasant but sometimes things take a bit too long to get done! The food is a bit repetitive. Too many baked beans!

Overall very satisfied with the care my dad receives, my only concern is it takes time to get him out of bed when asked. It also appears that the staff here are overworked too much. Also when dad has an outside appointment the staff need to let us know more than the day before if they want one of us
to go with him.

I have found Barleycroft satisfying in caring for my mother. The staff are very sympathetic and caring. Mum's room is comfortable and well furnished. I'm pleased that mum is kept clean and well looked after, although sometimes there seems to be a shortage of staff.

The Barleycroft Care Home has been the residence for my wife since 10-07-2010 and she is satisfied with her care here. Nursing staff are competent and the current management is the best we have experienced since entering this care home.

My dad has been left in the same t-shirt for more than 3 days on more than 1 occasion. He's had 2 broken beds and is currently in a broken bed. His room has damaged walls, damaged sockets, no light bulb in his bathroom. His peg feed is splashed all over the walls. The floor is just about swept. It's
never mopped clean.

The problems occurred with certain members of staff bossing my father around and upsetting him. He was also left in his own filth for hours while the staff were watching TV. This seems to be the norm and the poor quality of staff is endemic all the way to the top management. The bottom line being if
you love your relation don't send them here!

There has been a lot of upheaval in the home over the last 6 months. We seem to have had a number of new managers coming and going disrupting the flow of organisation and no continuity. On my Mum's floor particularly, we have had a number of care staff leave. I have also had to complain about my Mum's
hygiene as in the morning, there were faeces behind her nails which should have been cleaned and so I had to clean them which should not have been left to me.

The care is very good and nearly all the staff are willing and helpful. Mum never wanted to be put in a home but now would never want to leave!!!! The food is of a good standard.

Overall as a family, we are happy with the care my Nan has received. Nan feels at home and has made some friends. Nan has her favourite carers, the day carers Nan feels very content with, more so than the night staff. Nan can sometimes feel vulnerable at night time and sometimes feels ignored when she
needs the toilet. Overall, nan is safer living here that in her flat alone. The day staff are lovely and caring.

The home is clean and tidy. It is well run and my mother who is on end of life care is treated with respect. The staff on her floor look after her as if she is family. The food is varied and they accommodate to her needs as she is bedridden and cannot feed herself.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.388)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.388) out of 10 for Barleycroft Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.388 for Barleycroft Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (307 Excellents x 5) + (115 Goods x 4) + (28 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (28 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 482 Ratings = 4.388
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barleycroft Care Home is based on 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

“We started ready meals with Apetito, and I was not very keen to serve ready-made meals to the residents. Slowly, slowly, we started with one meal created from scratch per week, which was a roast dinner.

We now serve four weekly menus prepared from scratch.
I like chatting with the residents and getting their feedback about the meals.

After a long, tiring day, it is good to hear positive comments about the meals from residents
