Birchwood Grange Care Home was the most caring care home I have ever seen. I would go numerous times a week to visit my father on many occasions taking my young son along with me. Every time we went my son was happy to come. From the moment we entered the place it was immaculate with a fish tank, flowers
on the desk. Whenever we walked through the home during the day the residents were all up and dressed. Food time was not traumatic, the staff cared so much and made sure everyone was well fed. The decor of the walls was beautiful, especially the Alzheimer's unit. It showed pictures of the past and they wanted it to be a home away from home. My father was not in the home for long and went downhill fast, however they were always there for us either with a chair, cup of tea or even a hug! Even the day he passed away all the staff were so caring, compassionate and showed my father the utmost dignity. The care home was always safe, secure. From the outside, you wouldn't know it is a care home.

My husband who had Alzheimer's and was in Birchwood Grange Care home for the last 5 months of his life was treated with the utmost respect and dignity. The staff at the care home not only cared about him but my family also. I was extremely happy that he was able to spend the last months of his life
in a place like that. It was a home away from home. We visited him every day, sometimes numerous times a day and the staff's care and compassion went past the call of duty. One such example was when my husband went to the hospital with pneumonia on a Friday afternoon the manager of the care home came all the way to the hospital to pick me up. The home was always spotless. The gardens are amazing, the food was always good and the staff were always pleasant. The residents were always clean and well looked after. Also, the activities were always nice, numerous times a week people were singing or doing other activities there.

I can be very difficult at times but I like it here and I like the activities and the team. I get depressed and the staff take time to talk to me and take me out. The staff have been very kind to me and my brothers take part in the activities with me and this home has made me feel so much better.

I'm in the Asian unit, where everyone talks to me. I enjoy the temple in the morning and the music. My favourite is Bingo. I like visiting the temple when we get to go out. I like talking to the volunteers who are really nice.

What I enjoy about this home is everyone has lots of time for me. I enjoy playing chess with the activity team. I enjoy the food and the company, the staff make me laugh when I feel upset and it makes me forget I was ever unhappy. The home is like a hotel and I feel well looked after.

I came to the home 6 months ago and everyone has been really nice to me. Staff go shopping for me and always ask how I am and if I need anything. The activity team always ask if I'd like to join any of the many activities and I really like my own room and the coffee lounge. The home shop has some nice
treats too.

My mother was at Birchwood Grange care home for approximately 3 years. In that period my family and I got to know a lot of the staff.
I/we found the care to be above average, in fact very good, also the staff and managers were very helpful and accommodated many requests with smiles on their faces.

I have been here nearly three years and it really feels comfortable and friendly. My bedroom is well furnished and clean and the facilities are very good. The social activities are enjoyable although I'm happy with my own company, and can phone my brother regularly and see him. I enjoy the food and
am happy with the care from nurses and care assistants. I think the gardens and the building are very attractive.

Since my husband has been in this care home he has become calmer and more settled. The carers are all very good with him and other residents. He has put on weight with the good food. They have a singer that comes in and sings with him in Greek and my husband comes alive, I can see my husband is very
happy and content.
I would like to thank everybody involved as I can now feel at ease that he is safe and secure. Thank you very much.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.703)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.703) out of 10 for Birchwood Grange Care Home - Avery Healthcare is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.503 for Birchwood Grange Care Home - Avery Healthcare is calculated as follows: ( (98 Excellents x 5) + (43 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 155 Ratings = 4.503
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.2 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birchwood Grange Care Home - Avery Healthcare is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 150 registered maximum number of service users is 30. 12 Positive Reviews ÷ 30 = 0.4
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
