My mother has been a resident at Southborough for over a year. Having visited quite a few nursing homes in the area, I chose Southborough because I liked the relaxed atmosphere and the staff there, including a great activity manager, plus I liked the building and the gardens are really lovely. The care
there is excellent; the nursing staff are friendly, responsive and professional and most have been there for some years, which is always a good sign. They always keep me informed if there is any change in my mother's health or medication. The carers are lovely too - friendly and caring - and although there has been some turnover in management and carers in the last few months, they seem to work well together, getting to know the residents and listening to any concerns.

The management and staff were very caring.
They made every effort to keep my neighbour comfortable in the last few days of her life.

My mother passed away a few days ago after being a resident for over four years. Although bed bound, she was always clean and well cared for by the staff which was a great comfort to our family and we thank you all for that.

She was a resident at Southborough Nursing Home for three years. She was always treated with compassion, care and her individual likes and dislikes and worries were always addressed. I was always informed of any change in her condition. The nursing care was excellent - professional and knowledgable
as well as caring. All staff including housekeeping etc had the same high standards. Her end of life care was exemplary.

We have always found the staff are pleasant and helpful. The staff always phone me to report any health issue which is considerate. It has always been a friendly atmosphere when you enter but just recently this has changed due to a change of staff at the top so it seems. I know people have different
characters but it makes a lot of difference when you enter.

The atmosphere at Southborough is warm and friendly. The staff are welcoming and work well as a team. They make an effort to get to know the residents and there is a real feeling that family is important. My husband has a rare neurological disorder called Multiple System Atrophy. He moved into Southborough
nursing home in August 2018. An MSA specialist nurse came to the home to train the nurses so they could learn about his illness. I was impressed with the care plan they have made. The nurses are always happy to discuss with me any concerns I may have about his care. My only concern is that on some weekends they have been short staffed.

I found Southborough Nursing Home a lovely place. It is located in a quiet area, the building is atmospheric and a lot has been done to make it very comfortable for residents. Staff are helpful, always smiley, polite and accommodating. Although my partner cannot leave his room, I have seen the spacious
common areas with TV and all. I am happy that my partner's children chose Southborough Nursing Home for him.

My Mother was treated with humanity, dignity, respect and kindness. All of which the family are grateful. A special mention about the nursing/ healthcare staff, who far exceeded their core role in their politeness and general helpfulness to us visitors and also their service users.

Thank you all

My aunt has been a resident for just under a year, so enough time to form a considered opinion. Due to a decline in health, I have seen at first hand how the home caters for both a relatively capable resident and more recently one confined to her bed.

Overall, my aunt has been happy at the home,

though her health decline has inevitably affected this.
The variety of lounges available to residents is a bonus, as is the range of activities. My aunt particularly enjoyed the trip to Hampton Court and winning the bingo!

The food has a 5* hygiene rating and appears excellent but I have only rated it good simply because my aunt can only consume pureed food and has limited taste so it's hard to judge objectively.

The staff are mostly well motivated and there appears to be a planned training programme.
Finally, one note of caution. The home changed ownership in about March this year and time will tell what medium/long term impact this will have.

Southborough Nursing Home has a warm and caring atmosphere. I feel the staff do know my mother and are always helpful, supportive and caring and kind to her and to her family. I was pleased to see fresh energy and enthusiasm for activities within the home for residents as well as outings. My sister
and I both live a long way from Southborough Nursing Home but over the last year have been able to facetime our mother thanks to the help of the activities coordinator, this has been a great joy and worth such a lot to us and I believe to my mother.

My mother has been here almost six months, having moved from a nearby nursing home which closed. Once settled she has been content here, treated will and with regard to her own needs. She is mentally very alert, enjoys quizzes and conversation within limits of her deafness. She enjoys her food and for
the most part is good. The staff are unfailing friendly though sometimes short staffed. Communication with families is excellent.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.726)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.726) out of 10 for Southborough is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.726 for Southborough is calculated as follows: ( (259 Excellents x 5) + (69 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 340 Ratings = 4.726
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southborough is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
