Speirs House kindly agreed to let us use the cinema room for a 92 and 1/2 birthday party. She had missed her 90th birthday due to the fear of people catching Covid and her 92nd birthday due to the stroke. 6 months later she started the stages of learning to walk again so she wanted to have a party to celebrate being alive and to thank all the various people who had helped her in her recovery. The cinema room was ideal for our 30 people party of friends, family and carers. The party really started when she walked into the room aided by her physio and rollator. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion. Thank you Speirs House for making the party possible.

Speirs is a caring environment and I have confidence that my father is being well looked after. A GP calls every Wednesday so any health concerns can be addressed quickly. My father enjoys the food and eats well. I would recommend this care home.

I spent 2 weeks at this Care Home after an operation. I found the surroundings pleasant, the staff caring, the laundry service efficient, and the food good. The library could have been better but I suspect few of the long-term residents read much.

My mum has been at Spiers now for two years. She is so well looked after, and the staff are wonderful. She has never had a bad word to say about Spiers House. I never wanted my mum to be in a care home, but I know she is so well looked after and genuinely cared for.

Speirs House is a wonderful nursing home. The staff are extremely caring and it has a very homely atmosphere. The residents are looked after very well and offered daily activities to keep their bodies and minds stimulated. I am so pleased my dad is now living at Speirs House. He was not coping at home but now I know he is looked after night and day. I visited 6 or 7 care homes in the area but this was my favourite by far, and it has not disappointed me. It offers complete peace of mind for relatives.

We could not be more pleased with the care and help that Dad receives at this wonderful care home.
Since Dad arrived in July of 2022, he has been made to feel welcome and cared for. The staff are all very welcoming and supportive and have a lovely, friendly, yet professional approach to their work.
The manager and family liaison person have both gone out of their way to be very helpful and supportive to us all.
Their help and advice were greatly appreciated following Dad’s move from Wales and made a difficult time much easier.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Speirs House.

I have now been a resident in Speirs House for seven years and have been very happy here. My main, in fact only, major criticism is that Speirs House is not a suitable home for dementia patients as they cannot be separated. I have had some very unpleasant experiences due to this and this is why I have marked safety/security as poor. I am sorry there is a not a box for very good as many of my goods would have come into that category. I consider excellent to mean almost perfect.

Reply from Feruna O'Donovan, Carehome manager at Speirs House

Thank you for your valuable review. The safety of our residents is a priority everyday at Speirs House. We have processes in place to ensure that robust assessments are implemented as soon as concerns are raised by residents to keep everyone safe.

My Auntie has been a resident for a number of months and I am extremely impressed with the level of care she has received. They are well staffed with an extremely low turnover led by a manager who really cares. They are proactive with my aunties' care as well as keeping dialogue open with monthly in-person meetings, as well as welcoming feedback and suggestions at any time.

I would recommend Speirs highly.

This home is well run by the manager, who is always around and meets with me every two months to discuss my sister - about her care and how her care can be improved. The rooms are clean and bright, with lovely views of the garden. The food is good and nicely prepared. There is frequently something going on for the residents. O get updates after the GP visits and can always speak to a member of staff about my sister. This is the first home I have visited in the surrounding area.

My mum has now been at Speirs House for nearly a year, and I cannot fault the care given to all the residents. The staff go out of their way to make residents and family members feel safe, welcome and loved. Nothing is too much trouble, and I am always met with a smiling face from the manager and all her staff. Mum is very happy; she always looks smart and well cared for. There are plenty of activities scheduled for the week, which residents are encouraged to join in with. Relatives are encouraged to take an active role in all aspects of the home, and the monthly one-to-one meetings with the manager are most informative.

On Saturday 4 March 2023, on the day of my husband’s birthday, my family and I were surprised and very appreciative that Speirs had made a birthday cake for my husband and also wheeled a trolley in with cups, saucers, tea and cake for us to celebrate his birthday.
Thank you very much for the kind gesture.
The last two times that I visited my husband at Speirs in the afternoon (after 6 pm), there was no liquid soap in the soap dispenser in his bathroom for me to wash my hands. I did mention this to the staff there at my last visit, and again, when I visited him on Saturday 22 April, there was no soap either, so I did speak to one of the staff.

Therefore, before I left, I put a small Post-it sticker on the soap dispenser as a reminder for them to refill the liquid soap, which I hope will be done before my next visit.

Deciding on the right home for your parent is an incredibly difficult and challenging decision to make. As a recent resident of four months, we have found Speirs to be a happy place to reside. From a relative's point of view, I have found the home offers a very high level of nursing care with regular visits from the local doctor, followed up by emailing updated notes. The home has strong leadership with the care manager, who organises regular meetings to discuss your situation and offer any further assistance. I have always found my mother beautifully turned out, neat, clean and well cared for. All the staff are very kind, caring and helpful. The food is very good, freshly cooked and to a very high standard. There are weekly activities and a newsletter about all the fun days. The home is bright, comfortable, very well organised, and all the staff are welcoming. We have found what we were looking for - my mother is well cared for in a place that feels like home from home.

Speirs House is a wonderful atmosphere, and a lot of credit has to go to the amazing staff, who all genuinely care about creating a warm and happy environment for all the residents, and consistently go above and beyond to do so. I really enjoyed my time volunteering here and getting to know the residents as well as the staff. The manager is perfect and runs the home smoothly and with a lot of empathy and kindness. I would certainly recommend Speirs House to anyone looking for a safe and reassuring place for their loved ones.

My dad's last few weeks of life were spent at Spiers House. He had the best care we could have wished for from all the staff, without exception. I felt straight away that the staff understood Dad's needs and did everything they could to make him comfortable. Also, just as importantly, they knew how to support me and my family at this very difficult time.
