Hungerford Care Home provides general nursing care and more focused nursing care for residents living with dementia.

Situated in rural Berkshire on the outskirts of the historic market town of Hungerford, the home has extensive grounds and gardens with a rose garden and an orchard, where wildlife can frequently be spotted.

The home offers a range of onsite facilities and services, including hairdressing, aromatherapy, and chiropody, while the dementia wing has a multi-sensory room.

Residents can eat tasty and nutritious meals, which are freshly cooked by onsite chefs, in the communal dining room or privately in their own rooms if they wish to do so. Residents are welcome to offer input to menu ideas, with a Residents’ Food Committee meeting quarterly to provide them with the opportunity to do this.

The home’s activities coordinator provides residents with a detailed recreation programme to ensure they are engaged and occupied throughout their time at Hungerford Care Home. These are organised with input from residents and relatives.

We moved my mother's partner into Hungerford in March 2020. He is in Martins and receiving dementia care. Hungerford Care Home is amazing. From the moment I went to view the home, placed him in there and ongoing care they have been exceptional. The staff are fabulous. They make him feel at home
and relaxed. The care they provide is exceptional. They keep us informed regularly and are more than happy for us to telephone when we cannot visit. The activities they organise keep him fit and active, plus they often share photos so we can see the fun he is having.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this care home to anyone looking to get care for a relative or friend with dementia.

Our family have been associated with Hungerford Care Home for six years. My mother has received outstanding care each and every day. The indefatigable staff are very professional, caring and it is obvious that the well being of their patients is their highest priority. I would have no hesitation in
recommending the home and can’t thank the staff enough for all that they do to support my mother.

My Mum spent her final few months here following a long hospital stay. I was worried she wouldn’t be able to settle but the kindness of the staff made her feel welcome and very much at home. Everyone is very professional and experienced but my main impression is of how caring they are. Residents are
treated with respect, affection and good humour. My Mum was a great cook and enjoyed the food at Hungerford Care Home, as well as eating in the pleasant dining room with friends. She was able to continue making her own choices with as much support as she needed. At the end we were all treated with compassion.

It is hard to imagine a better place to be for physical care, love and kindness at the end of life. My mother had a well-appointed, sunny room. But of course what matters is the staff. Their dedicated care and the atmosphere they engender enabled Mum to enjoy and make the most of her last few months.
I will always be indebted to them for that.

My mother-in-law was treated with respect during her stay. All the staff were friendly and approachable, open and honest with all aspects of her care. Although she didn't each much, the staff always offered other dishes. Nothing was too much trouble.
When we visited, all the staff were friendly and
offered us drinks. The home was clean, and my mother-in-law was always well presented.

My wife has been resident for 4 plus months with a terminal condition. Her care has been excellent. Hungerford Care Home is an old building with loads of character and very well adapted to care home standards without losing the ambience of a large country house. This being the case it is homely and
not clinical. For those residents who are mobile, there is a well-appointed dining room and grounds with countryside views. We have not been able to benefit from the provided activities or outside visits and trips.

Hungerford Care Home was recommended to me by an official from the NHS for my wife. After viewing two other homes in Hungerford beforehand, it was first class. As indicated in the ratings below, it could not be bettered. All the staff are so kind and caring and I cannot single out a single department,
including the house girls for faults. Having lost my wife after two years in Hungerford, I was told to visit every day if possible to eat. I can't say any more.
Reply from Alison Geddes, Marketing Administrator at Hungerford Care HomeThank you for your wonderful comments about our home, we take pride in the high standard of care we offer here at Hungerford, so it is great that you find our home to be 'first class'. My sister-in-law had a live-in carer and a house in London. After a few falls, her hospital advised that she should go to a care home. Hungerford Care Home was able to take her at short notice, 3 years ago. It is near my home so I am able to visit nearly every day and may do so at any time of the day.
She has been continuously well cared for despite being unable to speak coherently or to walk on her own. The staff have been caring and supportive at all times. When there have been problems, I have promptly been kept fully informed. The staff are invariably friendly and helpful. I am impressed at how kind and supportive they are to residents who can rarely communicate their needs and frequently do not want to co-operate

Choosing a care home for a relative is a major and stressful experience, an experience we would rather not have to endure. From the first moment I walked into Hungerford it was instantly apparent it was different, the word “ home “ was a perfect description. It became my aunts home for the following
eighteen months. The staff were welcoming, helpful, friendly, caring and professional without exception. Dementia is a horrible disease for everybody concerned but Hungerford takes away some of the anxiety, I have never doubted for one second that my Aunt was receiving the best possible care in the nicest of surroundings. I would have no hesitation in recommending this care home to anybody. A massive thank you to ALL the staff.

The last 12 months of my aunt's life could not have been better. I have quite a bit of experience of carers and the staff at Hungerford are, in my view, exceptional. The home always presents as clean and hygienic, not an easy thing to achieve with dementia sufferers. I have observed that the time dedicated
to residents by the staff is remarkable - every resident is given attention and treated with respect, resident's dignity is retained.
I have a number of friends with relatives in care homes and have heard endless horror stories - I feel fortunate we selected Hungerford for my aunt, I'm convinced there will never be any horror stories coming out of Hungerford.
To sum up, thank you all at Hungerford, you will remain in our hearts forever for the care given to my aunt.

I am a disabled person - wheelchair bound with Spinal Stenosis. I came here for respite care for three weeks, because of work being done in my bungalow.
I cannot fault the home for its brightness, cleanliness and all the friendly staff who looked after me. Nothing was too much trouble. A lovely garden
to sit in which I did daily, good food daily, a good atmosphere around the whole home always.

The whole experience of moving mum into the care home went very well. Mum was very tired and confused when she arrived, but the staff have been very patient in settling her in. Today, with the help of the staff, she was playing musical bingo, which is good as she likes company, even if it is only people
watching.

My mother became a resident very suddenly having reached a crisis situation. From the very start, staff at Hungerford made my mother feel welcome and comfortable. They also gave great emotional support to us as her family at such a difficult time. Both the medical care and personal care for my mother
has been outstanding. We are kept fully informed at every stage of my mother's progress. Staff are always available and happy to answer our questions. The food provided is of a high standard and family members are made to feel welcome and included during mealtimes. I would like to acknowledge the staff who sat for 3 hours with my mother when she fell and broke her leg - some staff refused to go home until the ambulance arrived - thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.753)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.753) out of 10 for Hungerford Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 34 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.753 for Hungerford Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (309 Excellents x 5) + (76 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 396 Ratings = 4.753
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hungerford Care Home is based on 34 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 34 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
