Hungerford Care Home provides general nursing care and more focused nursing care for residents living with dementia.

Situated in rural Berkshire on the outskirts of the historic market town of Hungerford, the home has extensive grounds and gardens with a rose garden and an orchard, where wildlife can frequently be spotted.

The home offers a range of onsite facilities and services, including hairdressing, aromatherapy, and chiropody, while the dementia wing has a multi-sensory room.

Residents can eat tasty and nutritious meals, which are freshly cooked by onsite chefs, in the communal dining room or privately in their own rooms if they wish to do so. Residents are welcome to offer input to menu ideas, with a Residents’ Food Committee meeting quarterly to provide them with the opportunity to do this.

The home’s activities coordinator provides residents with a detailed recreation programme to ensure they are engaged and occupied throughout their time at Hungerford Care Home. These are organised with input from residents and relatives.

The care home team were always very kind, caring and sympathetic and made my husband's time at the home and mine as best it could be under the circumstances.
We can't thank them enough for all their help and support.

I would like to praise the tireless efforts undertaken by the activity leaders at Hungerford. Their dedication, energy, enthusiasm and attention to each resident's needs and abilities are outstanding. They are always planning new and exciting different ways to keep residents engaged and stimulated but
above all, to have fun and enjoy life doing things they felt they may never do again. Their dedication to wishing well is outstanding. They genuinely go out of their way to make the day so memorable and special for not only the residents but also their family. They have an in-depth knowledge and interest in each resident's past hobbies or experiences which they use not only to tailor activities but also to connect and calm any resident who may become agitated. The large range of activities, along with photos of residents enjoying them are always on display. I also love the fact that they also look after staff well-being by organising regular get-togethers and events. Well done. Keep up the good work.

When we rang the care home to enquire about respite for my wife, we found the staff were very aware of our needs and in a very short time a bed was feed for her. She had been quite poorly with a bad cold and a chest infection. Within an hour, she was admitted into the care home. Since being there she
has been looked after really well, her every request greeted with no hesitation. Food and bed and room were excellent and all the care to help her recover her health. Not being able to see has been a big problem for her but the staff are so willing to be of assistance, even when things occur. We cannot recommend a more friendly and helpful place for her to get better.

I was very pleased with the care that my mother received during her 3 years at Hungerford Care Home. All the nurses and carers seemed to have a really good understanding of my mother’s needs and concerns. I was particularly impressed with their efforts to keep my mother comfortable and encourage her
to eat and drink in the last few days of her life.

It was a great relief to me knowing that my mother was in safe hands.

I visit Hungerford Care Home at least once a month to see one of my ex-neighbours. The home always looks so beautifully kept and the residents look well dressed and happy - the staff treat them with respect which does not always happen in residential homes.

My mother celebrated her 100th birthday on 28th July 2017. The staff at Hungerford Care Home, especially the activities coordinator made this occasion very special for her and her family.
Mum has reached this great age in part due to the wonderful care she has received at this care home.
On behalf
of our family, I would like to thank all the staff for the love, dedication, and care shown to all the residents.
Many, many thanks.

Very impressed with the care, concern and visible friendship shown to the residents. It has a warm and non-institutional atmosphere.

The value for money I have marked as a comparison with other care homes I have visited but I do feel strongly about the imbalance between the self-funded residents

and the amount paid by local authorities for their funded residents. Of course, they have every right to the care. It is a national problem.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.753)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.753) out of 10 for Hungerford Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 34 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.753 for Hungerford Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (309 Excellents x 5) + (76 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 396 Ratings = 4.753
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hungerford Care Home is based on 34 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 34 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
