Hungerford Care Home provides general nursing care and more focused nursing care for residents living with dementia.

Situated in rural Berkshire on the outskirts of the historic market town of Hungerford, the home has extensive grounds and gardens with a rose garden and an orchard, where wildlife can frequently be spotted.

The home offers a range of onsite facilities and services, including hairdressing, aromatherapy, and chiropody, while the dementia wing has a multi-sensory room.

Residents can eat tasty and nutritious meals, which are freshly cooked by onsite chefs, in the communal dining room or privately in their own rooms if they wish to do so. Residents are welcome to offer input to menu ideas, with a Residents’ Food Committee meeting quarterly to provide them with the opportunity to do this.

The home’s activities coordinator provides residents with a detailed recreation programme to ensure they are engaged and occupied throughout their time at Hungerford Care Home. These are organised with input from residents and relatives.

Hungerford Care Home has an amazing atmosphere and staff with a great forward thinking attitude to care. The home itself is very modern with excellent facilities and great activities both groups and individual wish lists.

My mother started as a full body hoist patient and had lost a considerable

about of weight. Through good nutrition, personal care and medication, she is now back to a good, normal weight and is walking again. She has also settled very well and is happy and contented in her new surroundings.

Hungerford Care Home is outstanding and I would recommend is as excellent.

Although I have only been here for three days, my first impressions are that the care and accommodation for my father is of the highest quality.
I'm highly impressed with the diligent staff, their professionalism and duty of care.
My father is frail, vulnerable and ill, and it is comforting to know
that he is being looked after so well.

This review is based on visits every few months as opposed to more frequent visits. The care home always make us feel very welcome and the staff are very friendly and helpful especially the reception staff, and the nursing staff are available to answer questions when necessary. The home is clean and
my brother in law says he enjoys the food. I was concerned that he, being bed bound, did not participate in the activities on offer but staff told me that he did and enjoyed interacting with other clients and staff.
I believe he is being very well cared for and his needs are being met.

All the staff are friendly and supportive. They take good care of my grandad. My grandad is very happy. Every time we visit him, he seems happier and he is always dancing. There are days when he is unwell but the staff make sure he is taking his medications on time and bring the doctors in if necessary.
The staff always give information about his weekly activities and they treat us like family. They give an excellent service.

The care shown to dad during his time at Hungerford Care Home was exemplary and we - as a family - were much comforted and reassured by the qualities shown by the staff - patient, empathetic and humane, we knew he was in very good hands.
Support of us was also very good - we were always kept informed
and received warmly whenever we visited.
Coping with a loved one with dementia is often difficult, stressful and emotional and Hungerford Care Home did everything possible to alleviate our suffering, as well as dad's.

My sister was resident in this home for 1 and a half years. Her care in the above home was exemplary. The staff were always kind and caring - both to my sister and our family. When my sister died, the staff at the home were very supportive - for which we are extremely grateful.

As soon as you arrive you can see what a lovely place it is. It's secure from the outside, when you come inside you are welcomed with a smile. The care home is very clean (no smells) and very tidy. I am told that the food is good. There are lots of activities going on. My relation is very happy being
in this excellent care home.

Thank you for looking after her so well.

I can't fault it in any way whatsoever. My husband was in here before me. I have no complaints. Staff from the bottom to the top are wonderful. If I ask for something, it may not come straight away but it is never forgotten. The admin lady is a great help and the receptionist is brilliant.

My Mother has dementia and after two weeks at the first class care home, they found her "too challenging" so we transferred her to Hungerford Care Home. This turned out to be the best decision we could have made and I wish that this had been our first choice. The staff are brilliant and treat her with
respect at all times, even though she can be quite difficult. Facilities are excellent. I cannot recommend this care home enough.

On the whole very welcoming, friendly and caring. Food could be more imaginative and able to be more responsive to needs.
The resident did find it difficult to understand different accents, better with those who spoke slowly, clearly and got down to her level.
Communication overall improved but
is vitally important.
Receptionist very good, welcoming and always helpful on the phone - patient.
Nursing staff helpful on the phone and took great trouble.
The outlook to the garden from the room was very good and made a great difference to the residents. Also, the opportunity to have her bird table within view was enormously valued by the resident.

My Mother had the pleasure of staying at this lovely home for plus 2 years until her passing away in may 2016. We would visit and it was so clear to us that Mum was treated with respect and dignity but most importantly it was home. All the staff worked tirelessly to ensure a clean, tidy home and the
medical attention provided for Mum was first class but also completed with dignity and loving care.
Hungerford care home to Mum and us was her home and all the people who cared, quality supported and showed love and respect deserve a big thank you.
We still revisit and are made to feel part of their big family, it is a real credit to the team that Mum loved the home and was showed quality care.
We would also like to high-quality of care and respect shown to us after my Mums passing.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.745)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.745) out of 10 for Hungerford Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 33 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.745 for Hungerford Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (297 Excellents x 5) + (76 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 384 Ratings = 4.745
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hungerford Care Home is based on 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 33 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
