He was pleased with the care and support he received at Bupa care home at St Mark's, Maidenhead. He was a patient there for two weeks after having had a fall while on holiday in Spain. The injury had caused him to have a partial replacement hip.

The care he had from all the staff was first class, and he is now recovering well at home.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at St Mark's Care Home

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to have been able to give your Husband the care he needed following his surgery. It is great to hear that he is continuing to recover well now he is back home.

If you are considering sending your loved one with dementia to St Mark's Care Home, I would urge you to be vigilant and make sure any concerns you have are actually and correctly documented and followed-up by management.

It took the death of my mother and the injuries she sustained at St Mark's for the management to hopefully 'put their house in order'.

Serious failings were found following an independent Bupa review, a RBWM council's safeguarding visit and an unannounced CQC inspection resulting in the home's rating downgraded to 'Requires Improvement '.

I sincerely hope the many recommendations for improvement are implemented and Bupa's own company policies, processes and procedures, and statutory reporting, will now in fact be adhered to by nursing staff and management at St Mark's.

It is too late for our family but hopefully no one else will have to suffer the pain and distress we have experienced.

Reply from Julie Walsh, Customer Care Adviser on behalf of at St Mark's Care Home

We are deeply sorry for your loss and for the distress you and your family have experienced, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. My parents have settled well in St Marks. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Their rooms are so a good quality and nice view of the garden. Any issues maintenance staff help immediately. There are a range of different activities each day which helps keep them active and interact with other residents and local community. The doctor visiting each week takes pressure off my commitments and helps keep them all well. The Eton Unit staff communicate with me regularly on their well being. The menu and dietary provision for coeliacs needs more effort to offer inclusive food for dad.

All the staff are amazing and take good care of Mum. Tomi, Kim & Dani are especially good with her, getting her dancing and playing games to occupy her and distract her when she is in her wandering mode. The Thursday music session in the Windsor Ward is amazing, really gets Mum going and you can see how much she enjoys it. I wish there could be more sessions like this for the Windsor Ward.

My father has been at St. Mark's for nearly a year. I'm confident that I made the right decision in placing him at St. Mark's and he says it himself that I couldn't have found a better care home for him. He is very well looked after and content -- the staff are marvellous and create a very warm and friendly atmosphere. There are at least two activities for the residents each day, which means that there are many opportunities to socialise and be mentally and physically active. There's even a bar where residents can have a tipple at the regular Happy Hours. Because the building has been purpose built as a care home, the corridors are straight and easy to navigate with walking aids. The gardens are beautiful and the staff do get the residents out in the warmer weather. Many of the residents I've spoken to are happy there and everybody looks so well cared for. Communication with care staff and management has been very good. Overall, I think it's very well run.

The best review of a care home must surely be from a resident. To arrive at St Mark's to see my mother smiling and to hear her say " I love it here", is the very best recommendation. These are truly angels working within the dementia unit who treat the residents with care and respect. My mother has been a resident for more than two years and despite arriving to St Mark's recovering from a fractured hip at 98, staff at St Mark's helped her reach 100 years young- soon to be 101!

I can't thank St Marks enough for accommodating us at short notice for respite for my Mum, from the first time I was shown around the home by a lady who was so very helpful, I could feel the warmth of the home at every corner. When Mum went into the home for respite the whole team showed her compassion and understanding and was also very patient with her and us. The nurse was amazing and I have to say that goes for the whole team including, housekeeping, reception and of course all the dedicated carers. They made Mum and us feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble!

Review from B M (Cousin of Resident) published on 24 October 2024 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

Throughout the 2 3/4 years my cousin was in Eton Ward she was treated with professional care, kindness, and understanding. Her comfort was paramount, and all the staff members gave her a happy life as possible, and her slow decline both physically and mentally was acknowledged. From reception, unit staff, and the laundry staff, everyone gave her consideration and made her feel a valued person in her own right and the weekly signing, dog visits, and crucial visits of passing staff made her day to day bed bound experience no real burden. My cousin's last days were pain-free and dignified, always immaculate. The staff often sat with her. We really appreciate their splendid care and the fact that they made sure she did not die alone.
