My great grandmother is well looked after and very happy at St Mark's; she only ever has nice things to say about her care and the staff. It was the best decision my family made moving her there. They meet all of her needs and keep the family informed of any changes to her health. I have been unable to visit but keep in touch via regular video calls, and my great grandmother always looks happy.

My Dad was transferred here from a hospice at the beginning of December 2020 for end of life palliative care. At the time we were overjoyed that he was offered a bed at a Bupa ran home, but, we were left extremely underwhelmed by the experience.
- Care Assistants are over-worked. My Dad was actually being showered whilst he was on the toilet.
- Poor internal procedures, in particular, during the initial care plan meeting where they missed asking my Dad about his wishes should his health deteriorate.
- Lack of empathy and responsibility from the Care Home Manager and some of her staff (it took them five days to send condolences when my Dad passed!)
- We raised a complaint and did receive an apology from the Care Home Manager over the mistakes which were made, but it was a very stressful time made much harder by their behaviour.

If anybody would need any information, I’m happy to answer any questions and/or share evidence of our experience.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at St Mark's Care Home

Overall Experience

St Marks Care Home in Maidenhead has 4 residential units; 2 for general residents, 1 for dementia suffers and 1 for Alzheimer’s suffers. Both my mother-in-law (Alzheimer’s suffer) and father-in-law (dementia with early Alzheimer’s) became residents in 2017 until their deaths in early 2021, and the care they both received was excellent, without fault. Watching someone with Alzheimer’s and dementia is horrendous, and the units for these illnesses could not have been better, the staff respected my in-laws, were patient and very caring. The care home always had events and activities for the residents, and family were always invited to a lot of them. We were always kept informed of their well-being and any issues. There is absolutely nothing negative I could say about St Marks Care Home in Maidenhead, and would 100% recommend them to anyone requiring short term respite stay, general residential stay or specialised residential stay for Alzheimer’s or dementia. Thank you to all the dedicated staff.

Due to current restrictions, I felt the staff were very supportive and went out of their way to help us connect and communicate with her.

My mum was only a resident during the lockdown period from October 16th 2020, so my views are a little limited as I never got a chance to enter the home. However, I was able to see her and wave daily through the window, and Mum always seemed well cared for, always clean and tidy.
All staff members and management were helpful, friendly and professional at all times. The manager and the unit managers worked wonders, always keeping me up to date with regular phone calls.

My mum did have a few issues during her time at St Mark's requiring to be transferred to the dementia unit, but we were always contacted to be advised, and each issue was dealt with to my satisfaction, and the transition to the dementia unit was treated with respect and dignity she deserved. Unfortunately, Mum passed away two weeks ago, and I would like to thank all staff and management for the care they gave to my lovely little mum during her stay.

It's a strange time to be writing a review for a care home (March 2021), when Government Covid regulations have prevented normal visiting for a year. The team at St Mark's have worked so hard to look after the residents and keep families connected. I've had regular newsletters, and they are always available for a phone call for personal updates. A 'visiting pod' was built within days to allow for indoor visits through a window, as per regulations.

The care is excellent, compassionate and honest - I'm thankful my mother is at St Mark's. I'm looking forward to when I can visit again, and I know I will be welcomed by all the staff too. In normal times, they enjoy having the residents' families around.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at St Mark's Care Home

I am very pleased with the way the staff have looked after my father since lockdown. Although we are unable to visit regularly, I trust this home with no reservations. He has been resident for over 5 years now and my inlaws, who were previously resident, were also cared for by all staff (not just clinical staff) to a very high standard. I have no hesitation in recommending this nursing home for anyone who is looking for similar care. The only slight issue is BUPA's attitude to visiting is "cannot do" rather than adopting an enabling approach.

My Mum has lived at St Mark's for over a year now and is extremely well cared for, the staff are lovely and friendly. I couldn't ask for her to be in a better place, especially at this time. This review is to congratulate the two at St Mark's Care Home for all the hard work in the past months to improve the garden of Windsor Suite. The garden was always very nice but now looks beautiful also hanging baskets and the front of home is so well cared for and I thought they both deserved praise - Well done.

My mother came to St Mark's BUPA Care Home, Maidenhead in February 2019.
She had been on palliative care in hospital. She was bed-bound, with dementia and could not do anything for herself. We thought she would never get out of bed again.
In the last six months being at St Mark's, my mother is now getting out of bed, going to the dining room to eat, often feeding herself and now using a frame to walk a few steps, she also joins in with a lot of the activities they have there. This has happened with the love and care the staff have given to her.
St Mark's is an excellent nursing home.

I highly recommend it.

My grandma lives here and I cannot fault all the hard work the staff do. They go above and beyond to give the best care for my nanna. My mother-in-law became a resident at St Mark's when her condition became untreatable. She had been a resident in the home for 6 weeks in 2017 following a fall. She was met on admission by friendly staff who greeted her like a friend.
