Very poor care, have repeatedly asked for my nan to have soft food, and help with eating, but this never happens. She had spilt her cornflakes from breakfast over herself, when I arrived to visit at 13.30, her bed was soaked with milk and she was covered in cornflakes. I've asked them to help her take
her medications, they get left on her table and we find them in her bed. Bedding is dirty, food in her bed and is left. Her legs are covered in bruises, she has a wound on her bottom caused by being pulled up the bed on a sheet, none of this was reported to NOK. Putting incontinence pads on her when she's not incontinent, all she needs is help to the toilet, pure laziness. Shocking care.
Reply from Susan Doyle, Home Director at Gifford House Care HomeYour Nan has been with us since January, and recent concerns were raised. We responded promptly, asking for a review of her care plan. We aim to support residents' independence. Her dietary needs have been addressed, and speech and language referrals made to assess safe food consistency. For now, her NOK agreed on soft food. She prefers to feed herself, which may result in spills. On two occasions, a nurse offered medication during meals, but her NOK suggested giving it after. We've asked for meetings with you and the NOK, and referrals are in place. Public platforms don't fully reflect her needs or the steps we've taken. Family expectations can differ from the resident's needs, especially with multiple NOKs. We have provided two responses since, and a meeting is still pending. Issues like skin condition and continence are discussed with her NOK, but information can be misunderstood. We want to meet to clarify actions taken and agreements with her NOK.

Mum's care at Gifford House was excellent. Throughout her time there she made lovely relationships and settled well. She was cared for extremely well by all of the staff. The family also felt so well supported during the last few weeks of mum's life. Thank you for looking after her and us and for the
kindness shown at such a difficult time.

My dad was moved into Gifford house in September 2023 and I had heard such horror stories bout care homes. But this is the best place ever for my dad, he has flourished and put on weight always clean-shaven and washed clothes. I would never move him, he is there now for the duration. The staff are so
helpful and kind and you can turn up any time of day and all the residents are happy and clean and if I have to go into care in the future this would be my home of choice.
Reply from Susan Doyle, Home Director at Gifford House Care HomeThank you for taking the time for your lovely review. We will share your comments with the staff. We are honoured that you have entrusted us with the care of your Dad and it is our privilege to have him at Gifford House.

To everyone at Gifford House.
I would like to wish all the staff a very Merry Christmas and to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all the excellent care and support I have been given. Especially many of the staff members, there are so many I could name, but the list is just too long.
I
had such a fear of coming to a care home, but that fear has very much been alleviated by all the staff. So again, thank you all.
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year!

Dad was taken into Gifford House in September 2023. He was extremely frail and very much in need of nursing support. Gifford House provided exceptional care with a very friendly approach. They took time to get to know Dad as a person and to understand his needs.
The environment is clean and the decor
is in lovely condition. I would certainly recommend this nursing home and I am more than grateful to all nurses and carers. Only drawback is it's very costly.

On behalf of our whole family please accept our heartfelt thanks for the care and dignity all the staff at Gifford House showed to our dear dad during the final two weeks of his life. He meant the world to us all and to see how well he was cared for made his passing a little easier to bear. We know
the staff there made his time there relaxing and comfortable, they made sure that he always had his beloved walking stick on his bed as a comfort. The whole family were made welcome even though we sometimes took over the room.

My sister was admitted and was made very welcome. Her feet were done the next day, he hair was done the next day, and she had all her needs met and looked much better within the week. She has settled in really well, and all the staff are caring and proficient.

We are lucky that we have a beautiful hair salon, and the hairdressers also visit residents in their rooms to ensure that all residents have their hair cut and styled regularly.
The Chiropodist has, over the years, been looking after our resident's feet which makes them feel and look better.

My mother was found a bed at Gifford House by the hospital where she was a stroke patient.
Today when I visited her I found her suffering from another stroke. I called for a nurse who when told replied that had she taken her medication this would not have happened. I asked her to call an ambulance
which she said wasn’t necessary. When I said I would call for one she reluctantly did so. I followed up her call with another to 999. The ambulance arrived and they assessed her for signs of stroke. She was taken to the hospital. The help that she needed was not forthcoming. I had to fight to see her care plan and was not allowed to take photos of it. I did take notes. I found the overall management to be below par.
The majority of the staff were excellent. I have told the hospital to not discharge her back to their care. I have made a formal complaint.
Reply from Manish Chotai, Director at Gifford House Care HomeWe had received your email and as indicated to you, were in the process of reaching out to you following a full investigation. The investigation was discussed with you at our meeting on 22nd May.
As explained, we are expected to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions by having our nurses assess the residents. At your request, the nurse called an ambulance and mum was taken to A&E where it was confirmed there were no new strokes.
Mum’s care plan can be viewed and discussed with the nurses and we encourage relatives’ input. You did look at the care plan and were also given details as to how to make a complaint.
We can only apologise that you feel the experience did not meet your expectations.
As discussed, we felt that our staff could have communicated in a better manner and not become defensive. However, as explained it's normal human reaction to get defensive when being attacked.
The incident has highlighted to us that we need to train our staff to calmly respond to relatives.

My brother-in-law was placed in Gifford House for palliative care. From the moment he arrived, he was treated with the utmost care and dignity. Nothing was too much for the staff who were very attentive. He really enjoyed the food which was always to a lovely standard. As a family, we really enjoyed

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.228)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.228) out of 10 for Gifford House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.228 for Gifford House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (163 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (26 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 272 Ratings = 4.228
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Gifford House Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 102 registered maximum number of service users is 20.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
