Review from P T (Husband of Resident) published on 20 November 2018 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience
My wife has been in South Africa Lodge for five weeks and it is too soon to answer all the questions. However, on every occasion I have visited (30 times) I have been impressed with the patience, resilience and knowledge of the staff.
They genuinely care for and treat with dignity all the residents, no matter how challenging. The manager is very visible and the residents welcome her when she visits.
From what I have seen and heard, this is the best place for my wife. Four of our family members endorse my views.

My wife is on a special diet so I cannot comment on the food nor have I yet seen the activities.

I am extremely happy with the care and attention my brother gets. He is always clean and tidy. The staff are very attentive and show open displays of affection to all residents. He always appears to be happy and that is the most important thing to me. If he is happy I am happy

I have been visiting my brother nearly every Monday and Thursday for some time now. He has always been well cared for. The staff have always been very pleasant to myself. I showed the paper form of this review to my brother, the first thing he said it is very nice here, I like it here. It is always clean and tidy. I think security is excelent too

My mother has been staying at South Africa Lodge for three years now. During this time, all staff have been so kind and understanding to my mum and us; her family. Their attention to every detail of her care, her likes and dislikes and her comfort is heartfelt and sincere. The core ethics of the team is a learning environment.

My husband has been in South Africa Lodge since June 18 and I cannot fault it! Dementia has "robbed" me the ability to care for him at home and the staff look after him so well. I don't stop worrying about him but I truly know he is cared for by nurses, carers, cleaners, activity staff and management. Thank you.

My husband has been at South Africa Lodge since last March. First impressions - light, clean, tidy, calm, well run and very hospitable. His room has a lovely view - quite large and with a shower and toilet. Relatives are encouraged to bring in personal items to make the residents feel at home. Staff without exception are caring, friendly, concerned, knowledgeable and will always go the extra mile to help both relatives and residents. Events are organised - summer fare, musical afternoons, trips out in the minibus and diaries. Relatives can attend a meeting monthly. Food is excellent. I am so grateful to the staff for their care and support.

We visit our friend on a fortnightly basis and have seen him in 3 different homes over the last 2 years. Since he has been at South Africa Lodge we have seen great progress in his manner and conversation. He has improved so much which is all due to the care given to him by all the staff. They are a credit to their profession. I would, if it happened to me, love to be placed under their care and supervision as I know I would be safe and taken good care of.

I'm writing this review because I know how hard it is to find the right home. My aunty has been in good homes, and bad ones. It isn't until they are somewhere decent that you realise that really good homes do exist.
The things that have impressed me at South Africa Lodge are:
Coping with a fussy eater to make sure dietary needs are met.
Trips out, facilities and decent staffing levels to ensure life is varied and staff have time to talk to residents.
Going the extra mile, such as my relative enjoys cuddling a doll, and thinks it is her baby, so they found her a Moses basket and baby clothes for the doll.
Keeping me informed about any accidents, new medications.
How few falls she has had (previously she was forever going to the hospital after falls).
Keeping my aunty clean and well groomed, maintaining her dignity.
All little things, but that is what makes up life!

I hope this information helps someone to decide whether this home is worth considering for their relative.

Our daughter has been living at South Africa Lodge since December 2016. When we arrived she had several serious health problems. During the time she has bee there we have visited most days and have seen the excellent care and support she has been given by all the staff. Not only do they care for our daughter, but they have shown us (her parents) kindness and support too, especially during the difficult times we've been through.

I would like to say that my husband is well looked after and cared for at all times. I would tell anyone who asks what it's like there and I say just that it's wonderful there.

I can go home after seeing my husband every day and know that he is safe and well looked after.

My husband has been a resident of South Africa Lodge, Waterlooville for seven years. He has late stages of Alzheimer's and other illnesses. I am fully satisfied with his care and prompt treatment when ill. The staff at all levels are caring, competent, hard working and adhere to individual care plans. GP's visit twice weekly and OT's are also in attendance. Cleanliness and hygiene is very good, food delicious too. The home has beautiful well-used gardens, excellent entertainment team, two mini buses used for visits, wheel chairs can be used. It is a pleasure to visit as everyone is friendly and welcoming.
