Hill House provides nursing, residential and short stay care, as well as residential rehabilitation for the young and old. Hill House is a spacious, elegant eighteenth-century building converted to provide residential and nursing care, for long and short term needs. As well as supporting elderly residents, staff welcome those who are 18 and over and living with a physical disability or neurological condition, such as multiple sclerosis, in need of residential care.

Residents can expect a high standard of care in the midst of a friendly community. With each of their cosy bedrooms, residents can enjoy the convenience of an en suite, and there are lovely views across the gardens and surrounding countryside.

There are lots of places to relax, including the choice of six lounges. Residents can cosy up with a book in the library, use the computer room, or enjoy being pampered in the salon.

The large gardens are especially tranquil because they back onto a small area of woodlands. Within the walled space, residents can stroll along the paths, rest under the pergola, or catch-up with loved ones on the patio.

They want residents to settle in quickly and be happy here. That’s why they help them to hold onto as much independence as possible.

There’s also good food, lots to do, and a warm welcome for friends and family whenever they visit.

The team of activity coordinators plan all sorts of interesting things to do, including those who are less mobile. All activities are tailored to each person's likes and abilities too.

The chef prepares a range of delicious foods, including some family favourites and kosher meals.

My mum was very well looked after and was befriended by several of the carers which was lovely. Only negative was that the building was in a tired state and en suite very cold (no heating).
Activities were very good.

Over the past few weeks, I have been very impressed by the care and responsive nature of agency/bank staff on the floor. As always, the majority of permanent carers do a very good job under difficult circumstances, There are some agency carers who are extremely caring and efficient, but some, sadly,
are not in the right job.

All staff are good, some are excellent, even outstanding. The problem is there are often not enough to stop for a good friendly chat and 'getting to know you'. The food is OK, if nothing to write home about. But I'm safe and well looked after. I've been able to bring in my laptop and books and so continue
almost as I always did. I recommend Hill House and its staff - and - it has a lovely garden. I do need physio: not more - any.

We have told the care home colleagues on numerous occasions the portion size of the meals are far too big for my mother and would it be possible for my mother to receive a much smaller portion. This would save on costs and make my mother feel much better about not wasting food.

I was really worried about going to a care home but after 4 months in hospital I didn't have much choice in where they sent. After being here for a couple of months I've really settled in. The staff have been fantastic and did literally everything for me when I first came. After having physiotherapy
I'm now independent in all daily living tasks but the staff are still really encouraging about how I'm doing. The one time I did have a problem with an agency carer the issue was resolved extremely quickly. They try to do a lot of varied activities with residents despite covid they have people coming in to play music, baking and games. My view of going to a care home has completely changed and if in the future I'm unable to go home I'm not going to worry about having to go to a care home temporarily.
Reply from Rebecca Kellegher, Customer Service Adviser at Hill House Care HomeThank you for your lovely review. I found the staff very friendly and helpful and willing to do anything that we needed. Response to the call bell was good. Food could have been better, it was a little bit repetitive but there was willingness to provide alterations. My stay was comfortable and I would recommend it.

On the whole, I have been very pleased with my experience here. Sometimes the high nursing standards fall as there are too many agency staff at one time. This is usually at weekends.
Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Hill House Care HomeThank you for your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you had a good experience. Please be reassured that the agency staff are booked in advance to ensure that we provide continuity of care to cover short term sickness. We have now recruited additional staff to support the home.

I first stayed at Hill House in 2009 when I found the experience chaotic with poor management, food and levels of care. During this visit, I have been pleasantly surprised by the all-round improvement in facilities, food and management of my care. All the staff are approachable and the nurses are well
informed about my needs. Care staff and auxiliary staff work extremely hard with long shifts in some cases. More staff and fewer agency carers would raise morale and create a greater sense of fairness.

Happy with the care my mother has received in the 7 weeks she has been in Hill House. I have every confidence in the unit manager, she keeps me informed and is always happy to talk to me about my mother. Most importantly is that my mum is happy and comfortable.

It's very comforting to know that my uncle's needs are being met by such warm, caring professionals. Everyone I have contact with at Hill House, whether in person, by email or by phone, is friendly, approachable and positive. They clearly know my uncle, and treat him with friendliness and respect that
goes a long way to making him feel secure and helping him to retain his dignity. Although I appreciate the work of all sections of the staff, a special word of appreciation must go to the activities co-ordinators. I know how much their cheerfulness and attentiveness brightens up my uncle's days.
Also: in my view, the way that the management and staff of Hill House have coped with the problems and constraints of the pandemic has been nothing short of remarkable.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.684)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.684) out of 10 for Hill House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 31 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.684 for Hill House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (256 Excellents x 5) + (92 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 358 Ratings = 4.684
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hill House Care Home is based on 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 31 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
