Barchester Orchard House Care Home makes the most of pleasant grounds and a versatile interior to provide top quality nursing and residential care, with professionals available round-the-clock and also skilled in care and support for physical disabilities and dementia.

A committed team works hard to ensure that all provision is tailored to the individual, while allowing them to make the most of a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The ground floor of the home has five separate communal areas for residents to enjoy at their leisure and choice. There are 3 gardens also, the sensory beach garden, the courtyard garden and the wildlife garden with accessible enclosed decking area where residents can sit and hopefully catch a glimpse of the local red squirrel family. In 2107 the home won the 'Wight in Bloom' for the sensory beach garden.

The home was awarded 'Good' in all five domains by CQC in January 2017 and the team is working extremely hard towards an 'OUTSTANDING' at the next inspection.

All staff are carefully chosen and well-qualified to achieve the best standards, with the company philosophy focusing on an attentive service that also supports an active lifestyle. Personal interests are encouraged and there is much to enjoy within the life of the home.

The aim is to meet all residents’ needs over the long-term, living up to a reputation for quality that Barchester homes have earned.

I am generally happy with everything but do not like it when another resident hits my husband. Fortunately, he hasn't been hurt yet.
Reply from Kim Fleming, General Manager at Barchester Orchard House Care HomeFirstly thank you for your review, and raising your concern, which we have taken very seriously. Since this was submitted the head of the community, where your husband lives has discussed this matter with yourself and it has come to light that there was no witness to this actual event and no recording of the incident as stated.

My mother has vascular dementia and is quite frail. She has been a resident at Orchard House Care Home for a year. She is always treated with kindness and dignity by the nursing and caring staff. Her room is always spotlessly clean and tidy and there is a general feeling of a happy and friendly atmosphere.
I would highly recommend this home to others.

Mum was initially a short-term resident after breaking her shoulder and arm. Despite stating that she didn't ever want to go into a home, she decided after about six weeks that she would like to stay permanently. She thoroughly enjoys the food and activities and says she is very well cared for. She
has a new lease of life and new friends. It is very comforting to know that she is so happy and safe.

From the moment we stepped foot in the facility, we knew that this was the right place for her. The staff were warm and welcoming and they immediately put us at ease.
My mom has been living in this care home for a few months now and she has really enjoyed her time there. She has made some great friends
among the other residents and has formed close bonds with some of the staff members.
One thing that my mom particularly loves about this care home is the range of activities that are available to her. There is always something going on, whether it's a craft session, a game of bingo, or a music performance. My mom has always been a social butterfly, so being able to engage in these activities with her peers has been fantastic for her well-being.
The food at the care home is also top-notch. The chefs prepare delicious, nutritious meals that cater to all dietary requirements. My mom has always been a bit of a foodie, so she was thrilled when she found out that the food was so good.
Reply from Kim Fleming, General Manager at Barchester Orchard House Care HomeThank you so much for the lovely feedback about all aspects of life at the Orchards and how much youtr mum loves staying here. I will pass on these amazing comments to the care team and the rest of the team. Thank you.

Very friendly and high-quality carers.
Although my dad is desperate to go home this is not a reflection on the Barchester Orchard House Care Homes care. He is homesick. He always states the care here is much better than the hospital.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.789)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.789) out of 10 for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.814 for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (180 Excellents x 5) + (39 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 220 Ratings = 4.814
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2018

I grew up in Scotland and tried many university courses and careers before I settled into nursing at a later stage in life. I worked in hospitality, managed pubs, tried primary teaching and studied English and politics at university. I’ve travelled the world, but eventually decided I needed a career that I could give something back with.

I trained to be a mental health nurse and graduated in 2008, along with two children in tow. My career in Scotland involved working with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, and I worked my way up the ladder quickly to management. I specialised in positive behaviour support, and loved making a difference to people’s lives.

My family and I made the decision to move to the Isle of Wight in 2017, and that is when I joined Barchester as a peripatetic nurse initially, before being offered the position of deputy manager in 2018 at The Orchards. I love my work here, we have an amazing team and residents, and there are so many opportunities to really care and look after people who deserve that in their later years.
