Barchester Orchard House Care Home makes the most of pleasant grounds and a versatile interior to provide top quality nursing and residential care, with professionals available round-the-clock and also skilled in care and support for physical disabilities and dementia.

A committed team works hard to ensure that all provision is tailored to the individual, while allowing them to make the most of a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The ground floor of the home has five separate communal areas for residents to enjoy at their leisure and choice. There are 3 gardens also, the sensory beach garden, the courtyard garden and the wildlife garden with accessible enclosed decking area where residents can sit and hopefully catch a glimpse of the local red squirrel family. In 2107 the home won the 'Wight in Bloom' for the sensory beach garden.

The home was awarded 'Good' in all five domains by CQC in January 2017 and the team is working extremely hard towards an 'OUTSTANDING' at the next inspection.

All staff are carefully chosen and well-qualified to achieve the best standards, with the company philosophy focusing on an attentive service that also supports an active lifestyle. Personal interests are encouraged and there is much to enjoy within the life of the home.

The aim is to meet all residents’ needs over the long-term, living up to a reputation for quality that Barchester homes have earned.

From the outset, all staff have shown a genuine interest in Mum's welfare, care and personal likes and dislikes. Mum settled in very quickly and was soon very happy and particularly enjoys the food provided. Orchard House is a lovely environment for residents and families and is maintained to an excellent
standard.

Whilst charges are perhaps quite high, there is no doubt Orchard House offers real value for money. I visited many different homes before making a final decision and certainly made the right choice. Highly recommended.

My mother has been well look after at The Orchards since she was transferred from another care home, via the hospital, due to a fall.
Whilst immobile, she was cared for in her own room. She has been encouraged to get up, improve her mobility and join in with activities. She has some dementia and
the staff are very understanding and patient with her. The home is well maintained and the food is good. Residents are encouraged to eat and drink but their feelings are also respected. The residents always look clean, tidy and happy.
Reply from Gaynor Rhead, General Manager at Barchester Orchard House Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to review us and for rating us 'excellent' in the majority of areas stated. It is always great to get positive feedback and I will ensure that this good news is communicated to my hard working and diligent team at Orchard House.

I found the staff, nurses and carers all work so hard always managing to smile and provide such loving devotion but so overworked by the shortage of carers struggling to get essential care to all the residents and leaving no quality time as they did with my husband. Sadly some long term residents have
said to me in my two-week convalescence that the standard has gone down. There is so much good here I hate to hear that and so happy the shortage of help is only temporary.

The efficient and professional assistance we received from the management staff made this whole experience so much more bearable.
My friend was so pleased to be in a such a caring and supportive environment, which made her last few weeks so much more comfortable for her and us.
Whilst she resided
here, she was treated with respect and dignity throughout. I cannot praise the staff throughout the property enough.
I would be only too happy to be lucky enough to find as well and caringly ran home as Orchard House in my time of need.

My aunt has been at Orchard House for three years.
The home is welcoming, clean, and smells lovely.
They treated my aunt with care and dignity right up until she sadly passed away last Sunday 5th March 2017.
We can never express our thanks enough, the staff including cooks and cleaners should give
themselves a good pat on the back.
We will never forget our experience and thank you.
If it wasn't for my aunt's dementia she would have undoubtedly thanked you herself, especially because she was always clean and tidy which is what she deserved.

My mother arrived at short notice having been asked to leave at short notice from a retirement home who could not meet the caring requirements. She could not be an ideal patient because she had a form of dementia. Memory lane provided the care, interest and enthusiasm she most needed. The nursing staff
meet all her needs and the caring staff were helpful and kind. The staff all met their increasingly demanding requirements. We would recommend Memory Lane to any people needing the care my mother needed.

Having been in a hospital for 18 days following a burst ulcer in my stomach, I was very weak, undernourished and practically immobile. Orchard House, with their caring staff and good food, has, in 10 days put me well on the road to recovery, albeit I expect it will take several weeks yet to reach a
reasonable degree of normal health. One satisfied patient now safely home.

My partner likes the place which is the main concern. There are no restrictions in visiting times and staff are friendly and easy to talk any problems over with. At Xmas time they really keep the clients interested with all the activities the staff do. Wifi would be very helpful to have to be able to
keep in touch if I am ill and unable to visit.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.715)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.715) out of 10 for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.840 for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (147 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 175 Ratings = 4.84
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Orchard House Care Home is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2018

I grew up in Scotland and tried many university courses and careers before I settled into nursing at a later stage in life. I worked in hospitality, managed pubs, tried primary teaching and studied English and politics at university. I’ve travelled the world, but eventually decided I needed a career that I could give something back with.

I trained to be a mental health nurse and graduated in 2008, along with two children in tow. My career in Scotland involved working with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, and I worked my way up the ladder quickly to management. I specialised in positive behaviour support, and loved making a difference to people’s lives.

My family and I made the decision to move to the Isle of Wight in 2017, and that is when I joined Barchester as a peripatetic nurse initially, before being offered the position of deputy manager in 2018 at The Orchards. I love my work here, we have an amazing team and residents, and there are so many opportunities to really care and look after people who deserve that in their later years.
