Review from Sue C (Sister of Resident) published on 2 June 2023 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My sister was first admitted to Betsy Clara House Nursing Home in February 2021 after suffering a bad fall and on the verge of being diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson's. This was confirmed shortly afterwards, my sister was very happy at Betsy Clara and before she got too ill, loved to join in all the activities there. She got on well with all the staff who go above and beyond in caring for every one of the people living there. The home is very clean, with good healthy meals and a friendly atmosphere. I couldn't have wished my sister to have ended up in a nicer place.

Reply from Kate Jenner, Home Manager at Betsy Clara House Nursing Home

Thank you for your kind words, it was our pleasure to care for your sister.

My Mum has been at Betsy Clara House Nursing Home since December 2021 after she deteriorated and couldn’t live at home anymore, the care and love the staff have shown her especially more recently has been absolutely amazing.
When she first moved in they got her up, into the lounge and joining in the activities, more recently while she has been poorly they have shown love and kindness to the whole family, nothing has been too much trouble and when we haven’t been there she’s had someone sitting with her.

The home might need a bit of love but the residents don’t, they are all well loved and looked after.

My Mum was welcomed to Betsy Clara in December 2022. We are delighted with the excellent care she is receiving there. The management, nursing and care team are welcoming, caring and nothing is too much trouble. We were very soon part of the Betsy Clara family!
Mum is safe and well looked after and treated with dignity. Every effort is made to encourage Mum to eat and drink and find out her likes and dislikes to maintain her weight. Betsy Clara has ensured that Mum has some structure to her day and there is always some activity going on which she can participate in if she chooses. Every event is celebrated and made to be a special occasion which is so lovely to see.

Thank you so much Betsy Clara. You are all amazing!

My partner's grandmother moved here after a poor experience at another care home and showed an immediate improvement. The staff are all lovely and so good with all the residents, you can tell they really care! The kitchen staff put a lot of effort in and will often make her something else if she doesn't fancy what's on offer. I always feel very welcome when visiting, very pleased she's now being so well looked after.

Just would like to say how lovely everyone is and how good they are with my dad and all the other residents. I always feel welcome and feel happy my dad is here. The kitchen staff are always there to help too.

My dad has been here for 6 months under NHS-funded CHC after a fall at home We had been providing his care prior to this. We have all been happy with the level of care he has received and feel he has done exceptionally well due to the care provided. The staff are excellent and you can see the compassion and professional way they treat the residents. My dad responds well to them because of the way he is treated and because of the activities taking place. Betsy Clara is well-managed and all our requests and enquiries are dealt with promptly. All the staff, from top to bottom, are lovely and can't do enough for Dad or his family. Betsy Clara is excellent in every respect.

Whilst Betsy Clara Nursing Home does not have the hotel ambience of some other homes the bottom line is care, not linen napkins or swanky furnishings. The carers at Betsy Clara are second to none showing infinite patience often under trying circumstances.

Lovely, kind, caring staff. Looked after our dad amazingly, and couldn't ask for a better place for our dad to spend his last years.
Able to visit at any time and also gave time to check on us as well.

The entertainment, and crafting for residents are daily so there is always something going on.

Nan has been at Betsy Clara House Nursing Home since her diagnosis when it was deemed she was no longer able to look after herself almost 2 years ago. The staff go over and above to provide for their residents who they treat like family. There is always an activity going on to keep everyone entertained and even during Covid, the staff did their very best to make sure we were still able to visit and celebrate the special occasions. Well done Betsy Clara.

My mum has been in Betsy Clara House Nursing Home since February 2022.

We had teething problems at the beginning but these were always addressed with us. Mum is now fairly settled, is well fed and cared for. The staff work hard to keep the service users happy and entertained. It is like having an extended family now. Thank you to the manager and staff.

My dad has required fairly intense support; two previous homes failed miserably. Within one week at Betsy, he is smiling again, animated to wanting to be with his family. He is relaxed and comfortable, interacting with others and overall a happy man. Betsy has been mine and my dad's saviour. A true hidden secret.

This is an extremely well run home with staff members who genuinely care for their residents. My mother is looked after very well and we are confident to leave her in their care. Communication is also very good and we are kept informed. Phone calls are always dealt with in a courteous and friendly way giving sound advice when it is needed.

Betsy Clara is a great place to live in and visit and we truly believed that its management and staff are all stars.

My Father had a three-month stay in Betsy Clara Nursing Home following some poor health and very difficult behaviour due to epileptic seizures. The staff were fantastic with him and he received excellent care particularly in light of the continued stress of managing the Covid situation. The carers are dedicated to making residents lives the best they can be and we are very grateful for the level of care he received during his time there.

My mum came into Besty Clara at the beginning of October from a residential home. We were a bit worried as she was happy where she was and had been there for some time, but we thought she needed the care of a nursing home. We needn't have been concerned as everyone was so kind, friendly and helpful and we couldn't have chosen a better home for her to move to.

She has settled in well as she now has a reclining wheelchair and can mix with other residents and enjoy the extensive entertainment programme they have.

My father was transferred to Betsy Clara House following a period of respite care at another nursing home. I am pleased that this happened, as the subsequent care he received for the weeks he was there up until his passing was excellent. Despite the restricted visiting times due to COVID-19, it was evident that the staff team not only carried out their duties in a conscientious and professional manner, but they clearly cared for the residents on a personal level and showed great compassion and support for visiting family during a deeply distressing time.
It was greatly comforting to know that my father was being treated with dignity, and kept as comfortable as possible - the staff were all absolutely first class - honest, caring and thoughtful. They always went that extra mile.

I am so grateful to Betsy Clara House for all their care and support.

My mother left hospital at the end of July and I never thought she would be capable of leaving her bed. She had suffered several falls over the previous 3 months that resulted in her losing her front teeth, fracturing her cheekbone and causing another bleed on the brain. She could not talk, walk or swallow and she slept most of the time. She was transferred to Betsy Nursing Home and kept in isolation for the first week. My brother and myself met a member of staff who was one of the ladies looking after mum and when she told us that they would get Mum out of bed, dressed and sitting in the lounge we never expected that to happen. Well, it did. Whenever we visit, we see Mum in the lounge or the garden. Although mums condition is still poor she is relatively happy and we feel good that she is being exceptionally well cared for. All the staff have been excellent. The Betsy Nursing Home is more like a home than we could wish for.

My father moved to Betsy Clara towards the end of his life. He was deeply unhappy in his previous home and they could not cater for his needs. Dad had dementia and was disabled. His dream was to see the sky once more and feel the sun on his face, and he got to do that in Betsy Clara. Shortly before he died I saw him in the garden and it felt like he was being looked after by family. The staff were absolutely wonderful . They desperately tried to make dad as comfortable as possible and as happy as possible. I remember saying to him, "wow, dad. It is so lovely to see you out in here in the garden" and he replied with a smile "Good, isn't it!"

My sister recalls him saying to her that "they are really nice to me here " something he had never said in his previous home. I wish Dad had been moved to Betsy Clara sooner, I can not thank everyone enough for the amazing care they gave my dad.

When my father-in-law was admitted to Betsy Clara, he was very confused, had no get up and go and didn't appear to want to be around. However, through the dedication and love, he was given by the staff, they made him a "new man". He gained weight and confidence and started to enjoy life again. They were brilliant, and I have the highest praise for them and wouldn't hesitate in recommending Besty Clara care home.

I cannot praise the staff at Betsy Clara Nursing Home highly enough. Their support, care and respect shown to my father were first class. Too many people to thank, they were absolutely grilling throughout my fathers stay there and they turned him around from a rather frail and distant person into someone who now has the zest for life. Thanks to all at Betsy Clara.
