Our experience of the Yellow dementia unit at Westbrook House, Margate, was deeply distressing and fell far below acceptable standards of care.

My mum, who had dementia and advanced cancer, was repeatedly left in unclean clothes, allowed to change herself, and on several visits was found sitting

naked. She went days without washing, was not helped to dress, and often appeared exhausted, dirty, and undignified.

Staff failed to recognise her cancer-related pain, repeatedly labelling it as "behaviour," despite GP and palliative nurse involvement. She was left in constant pain and given incorrect medication doses, causing dizziness. On one occasion, after being given the wrong medication, medical assistance was not sought for over 24 hours.

She was frequently left alone despite needing supervision, leading to distress, self-harm behaviours, and unsafe situations. Medication records were inaccurate, staff made highly inappropriate comments, and communication with management deteriorated.

Reply from Mari Anderson, Registered Manager at Westbrook HouseDear Robyn,

I would like to offer my apologies if you feel that your mother's care and support have not met your expectations during her stay at Westbrook House. Westbrook House is a social care facility that does not have registered nurses working onsite. The team work closely with medical and social care professionals to meet the care and support needs of the individuals they support. All medication related observations, concerns and queries are directly discussed with relevant medical professionals.
Please raise any concerns via Kent County Councils Customer Care team so that we can investigate and respond to your concerns directly.

Best Wishes,
The Registered Manager.

Very happy with the standard of care and was called this morning to say that whilst bathing my wife they had spotted a potential DVT.
They spoke to Doctor on our behalf and then asked if I could take her into A and E to be checked over and it turned out that they were right and she needed further treatment.
I
shan’t name names but I honestly feel that this is a caring environment with committed staff.

Our mother is regularly in respite - she has always been treated with such care and kindness. Her specific cares and wishes are always taken into account. She is always clean and looks happy when we visit.
We are always made most welcome by the staff. We felt the Covid pandemic was well handled and
Mother was protected and cared for in difficult circumstances.
Having to book appointments to ensure the home is not overwhelmed with visitors is sensible, as is the fact that the staff recognise we all come from quite a long distance to visit and accommodate us with a nice visiting area and a cup of tea. Overall, we are very happy with the service, the home and the staff.

My mother was taken into their care in February of 2021.
Whilst there, she witnessed staff arguing, in front of her, with regards to if they should or should not call an emergency ambulance for her.
Also, they wouldn't help her take a drink of water (she was too weak to lift the cup), and told her
to try!
Sadly, my mother passed away.
Reply from Deborah Ford, Registered Manager at Westbrook HouseAt the time of this complaint Westbrook House was split into two and had a social care registration and a health registration with CQC. This reviewer's mother was in the care of a local health trust, a service occupying part of the building supporting the local acute hospital with discharges and not the social care part of the service. I did at the time contact this reviewer and explain the situation and that this regrettable incident was not my staff. We give her contact details of managers who were supporting staff on the unit her mother was residing at the time. I hope she managed to get answers and explanations to the concerns she raised.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 1.6 (1.583) out of 10 for Westbrook House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 1.6 out of 5 from 1 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 0 out of 5 from 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 1.583 for Westbrook House is calculated as follows: ( (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (7 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 12 Ratings = 1.583
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 0 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westbrook House is based on 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) =
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 0 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
