My father spent over four years at Abbeycrest.
He had dementia and was unable to talk but he always looked very happy.
The staff were so lovely and caring and I couldn’t fault them.
He was very well looked after and always nicely turned out and he enjoyed the food and he particularly liked the activities,
especially music and dancing.
The staff at Abbeycrest were a family to him, especially during Covid when it was harder to visit.
Reply from Home Manager at Abbeycrest Nursing HomeThank you for your kind words about the care your father received and the recognition of the team at Abbeycrest. It is lovely to read that he enjoyed the music and dancing and that he and you felt part of the Abbeycrest family. My mother lived at Abbeycrest for five and a half years and was beautifully cared for by the manager and her team. Towards the end, life became more challenging for her (she was 98 years old) but the level of care was outstanding. The entire staff was friendly and approachable and coped with the difficulties
of Covid admirably. We were always made to feel welcome and any concerns of ours were attended to promptly. I would recommend Abbeycrest strongly.
Reply from Home Manager at Abbeycrest Nursing HomeThank you, Jo, for your kind words and recognition of the team at Abbeycrest. We are really sorry for your loss and we hope we made your mother’s five years with us as peaceful as possible, she was a treasured member of our community. My 92-year-old Dad has until very recently lived on his own with minimal help and maintained a high degree of independence, including driving short trips in his car. A deterioration in his capacity meant that he needed a supportive environment with nursing care on hand. The welcome he has received
from the whole team at Abbeycrest has been heartwarming. He settled in very quickly and gratefully accepted the essential care that he was given. I cannot speak too highly about the leadership and all the staff, who make Dad’s days enjoyable and treat him with the dignity he deserves and he loves the food!
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Abbeycrest Nursing HomeThank you for your lovely words, Richard. It's great to hear that your dad has settled in nicely at Abbeycrest. It's always reassuring to know that our loved ones are in good hands, especially when they require extra care and support. We are delighted to hear that your dad is enjoying the food, it is important for residents to have access to healthy and delicious meals. Thank you again for sharing your positive feedback, we will be sure to pass on your kind words to the team, including the chef!

We went as family to view Abbeycrest for respite for both Parents/Grandparents. Dad has Parkinson's. Mum advanced dementia. Then due to both ending up in hospital with health issues ended up with just Mum/Nan going to Abbeycrest as Dad still in hospital. Mum settled in very quickly and was extremely
well looked after by all staff, especially one member of staff, allowing us as a family to concentrate on our Dad knowing how safe, and well cared for she was. We will never be able to thank the staff enough for the help and support they offered in a very difficult time in our lives.

My mother has been a resident at Abbeycrest in Sonning Common for over a year now. It was her decision to go into the home due to failing health therefore staying in her own home was sadly no longer an option. She enjoys being at Abbeycrest very much, the social aspect is important to her but equally,
she can have peace and quiet when she needs it. She has a nice view from her window to watch the world go by. The staff are fantastic and as has been mentioned the same staff are looking after her still which is nice for us and also mum as they get to know her and us, which is important. It's great to have Millennium Park just around the corner to take mum to get some fresh air from time to time. The staff also take mum out which I know she very much appreciates. Great team - keep up the good work!

My mum was in Abbeycrest for a month or so for some respite care while my dad was recovering from surgery. The care she received there was outstanding; she met with so much friendliness, kindness and patience. Mum, who has dementia, needs constant stimulation and interaction with people so loved the
fact that there was so much going on - always an activity or someone to chat to. Everyone was kind and made her feel very special. We felt that the staff got to know mum well in her short time there and as a family, we really appreciated the care she received; it gave us peace of mind while we were also supporting my dad's recovery. Thank you to every member of the Abbeycrest team - you are all amazing!

My mum was moved to Abbeycrest from hospital nearly 2 years ago in lockdown. An incredibly stressful time as I wanted to keep her in her home but having battled with the physical and mental challenges of Lewy body dementia and several live-in carers it was time. Abbeycrest were amazing at getting my
mum out of hospital quickly, smoothly taking over all of the arrangements and handovers. We wanted her room to look like her home which wasn't easy in a lockdown but with photos and lots of communication, it was all made lovely for her arrival. I am able to visit my mum knowing her every need is taken care of from doctors, medications, hairdressers, opticians, lovely food and enjoy seeing her without the stress. Handing your loved one over when you have held the reins for so long is not easy but Abbeycrest have been amazing. The continuity of staff, who know all the residents and everything about them is what I love, she has had all the same staff looking after her since she arrived.

My mother arrived at Abbeycrest in March 2019. They have excellent facilities for the residents. Plenty of activities for residents who wish to participate. My mother became very reliant on the medical/nursing staff during her stay. Sadly she passed away on 20th December at the age of 97. We found the
staff, from the manager down to the cleaners, all very polite, friendly and obliging. We, as a family, would definitely recommend Abbeycrest to anyone looking for a care home for themselves or a family member.

Right from the start, my two sons and I felt Abbeycrest was the perfect place for my wife to spend her remaining few days. All the staff were very professional but also so caring and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, visiting times were extremely flexible, and when visiting, we were together with
friends, we were always offered tea/coffee and cake.
Everybody who visited my wife said what a lovely place for her to be.
I have close friends who have had partners at Abbeycrest who have all had the same experience as me.
Even the phone call from the home to say my wife passed away was handled so caringly and was much appreciated. When my son and I collected my wife's clothes and belongings, the staff could not have been more helpful and empathetic.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Abbeycrest following my experience.

Mum was end-of-life care last month, and the staff were compassionate and caring and were so supportive of myself and my sister at such a sad time.
When Mum was able to access the amenities, she used to enjoy flower arranging and, most definitely, the film nights.

My wife was admitted to Abbeycrest in February with advanced vascular dementia. Between February 2022 and October, when she died, she was cared for with great kindness. I visited her nearly every day and was always welcomed by the staff and, when I asked for something to be done to make my wife more
comfortable, it was done quickly and with a smile. My wife had such severe mobility problems that she stayed mostly in her room. However, had she been able to participate, I know that there were many events for the enjoyment of residents. The one thing that was done for her, and which she much valued, was to have her hair done regularly. At the end of her life, she was treated with dignity and the home made sure that I and my children could be with her.

I had an important hospital procedure appointment so did not hesitate to make sure my husband was booked into Abbeycrest for a week. This being his second visit this year. The caring staff are extremely kind, welcoming and informative should information be required. The home has a warm, happy and cheerful
atmosphere. The ideal care/nursing home should respite care be needed. I will be booking a third visit for my husband later this year.

Overall happy with the care that my mother received especially as she had a temporary, unanticipated medical issue when she went in. Impressed with how quickly the local GP Surgery was engaged. The staff answered any questions that I had regarding her health and well-being. Was impressed how an issue
with my mother getting agitated about wishing to go home was dealt with in a caring and compassionate way. My only concern, which in no way reflects on Abbeycrest, was that my mother, whose condition isn't as advanced as that of the other residents that she was with, didn't get the social interaction with her peers that she needs - although the staff did their best to make up for this in terms of companionship. Overall my mother came home from her respite care happy, healthy and more chatty. Happy with the care that she received.

Respite care was excellent. A medical problem was identified (an infection before admission) and a local GP service was called in. They continued treatment and also identified other conditions and prescribed treatment which was successfully carried out by the Care Home staff. The respite care was beneficial
and well organised for example in making sure meals were taken and personal care needs attended to. There was perhaps less stimulation from interaction with other residents than hoped for possibly because their condition was more advanced.
Altogether a happy experience: leaving respite more communicative, more confident, relaxed, eating and sleeping better.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14, which has been reached with 49 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Sue

Sue Smart

Job Title: Home Manager

“As Home Manager I believe that our residents should receive the very best bespoke care and support they require to meet their needs, whilst making each day memorable.

I have been blessed to have a very successful career working in the health and social care sector with over 30 years of experience. I trained as a nurse in Hertfordshire and have maintained my registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, after qualifying I worked in A&E before stepping into the community in 2003 where I managed domiciliary care including complex care as clinical lead and then into a care home management.

It is important to me that my team feel valued and supported in their roles, as well as having the opportunity to develop so that our home can thrive and be a happy and beautiful home for everyone.

At Abbeycrest, we are one big family and everything we do is from the heart, treating the people living in our community as individuals understanding their choices, wishes and dreams for no other reason than to make a difference every day.”

I grew up locally and even went to school up the road, I moved away to undertake my nurse training and am pleased to be back in the local area. It is important to me and the team that Abbeycrest is part of the Sonning Common community. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, I love to travel and have been fortunate to visit many countries around the world.”
