Overview

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for The Albany Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 17 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Albany Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.399 for The Albany Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (100 Excellents x 5) + (74 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 193 Ratings = 4.399

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Albany Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 7.4 positive Reviews (37 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 8 Reviews ÷ 7.4 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Mum was staying at Albany Care Home for a while until her care package was being sorted out. During her time she spent here the care and the food we have been excellent, nothing is ever too much trouble. There's always activities going on and we can visit for as long as we like and are always made to feel welcome.
The only thing I could say is that maybe the room could be cleaned and hoovered more often.

My father was transferred to The Albany from the John Radcliffe hospital to one of their 'hub' beds as an interim stay before carers were in place at home. My mother, sister and I were so impressed with the wonderful surroundings, cleanliness and decor there. The food is great and very varied. But above all, the nursing and care staff were so lovely, caring and gentle with my father. They have a such a tough job but they were always smiling and nothing ever seemed too much trouble. My father felt safe and very well looked after for the duration of his stay (2.5 months). Although not close to home for us, we were glad that my father was at The Albany - knowing he was in great hands at The Albany.

My mother was transferred to the Albany in Headington for rehabilitation after a prolonged stay in two hospitals. The staff are very caring. All diets are catered for and food presented to look appealing, as well as being excellent. The home looks spotless and smells really fresh. The dining area looks like a very upmarket hotel, 2 conservatories and plenty of seating areas inside and out in the garden. Parking for visitors a bonus.

Was sent from hospital, Oxford. On my experience, lots of things could be better i.e. Time it takes to answer bell. Told if wearing pad, use it and would be cleaned when they could find the time.

Rebekah Saint, Marketing Administrator at The Albany Care Home responded to this review on 12 Feb 2018:

Thank you for taking the time to review us, we really appreciate hearing what you have to say about our home, we pride ourselves on our high standard of care and I am sorry you feel this has not been met. With regards to the time it takes to answer the bell there may, on occasion, be a short delay as the carers may be with other residents however, we continually try to reduce the waiting time with regular reviews on staffing levels taking into consideration the individual needs of the residents. As always we have an open door policy and should you find yourself in our home again we encourage you to raise any issues with our home manager.

Albany Care Home has a lovely atmosphere, warm and caring. The staff can't do enough to help and are very welcoming to residents and visitors.
The standard of cleanliness is extremely high with none of the usual smells that can be often prevalent in care homes.
The food in the dining room is of a high standard.

Excellent care and service. Very friendly care. Nothing appeared too much bother to help my mother adjust to the care home. Rooms were excellent and the drink area was extremely good and very clean. Meals looked good and there was plenty of food throughout the day. Thanks to all the staff for their help and support.

My aunt had a very unsettled 8 months in the hospital, then sent home for a very short period, and back in the hospital after another fall. Now she is in The Albany where she awaits package of care, all staff so very friendly, helpful, nothing is too much trouble and very well run. If you have a query, it is dealt with and answered quickly, there are always activities going on, sing songs, quiz, games, as for the food she loves it.

She has flourished since going into The Albany. Everywhere is always kept very clean, there is a hairdresser who goes in every week, there are quiet areas if you want to go and have a bit of privacy and a lovely bright conservatory. Tea/coffee is always on offer whatever the time of day. My aunt loves it so much she would love to stay, when I left last week, all the staff and residents were joining in to put up the Christmas tree and decorations, everyone was involved.
Am looking forward to the festive fun on offer for them this week.

Mum has been in The Albany Care Home since July 2016 and the home has given us this quality time with her.
Amazed by the care she has received, and experienced times she hasn't done for years.
However recently several members of staff have left for various different reasons.
The concerning matter for us relatives is that mum gets used to staff and they to her - so this can be detrimental to her well-being.

We have found the home staff very good.
The food is well-presented and varied.
My mother is clean, happy and not hungry.
She, as all, have a good varied entertainment to help keep their minds active.
My only concern is a urine smell as you enter the first-floor corridor.

Lynn Gray, Home Manager at The Albany Care Home responded to this review on 15 Mar 2017:

Thank you for your comments, we welcome all feedback that will help us continue to improve our care services.
With regards to the smell of urine, we had a particular issue with one of the bedrooms on this floor, but we are in the process of removing and replacing this carpet to avoid this issue in the future.
If there is anything you would like to discuss further, please contact customercare@brighterkind.com or pop into the home anytime. Many thanks, Lynn Gray Home
Manager.

Polite reception from a nurse who let me in and knew who I was which is great that visitors are remembered.
Greeted again in name by another member of staff!
Also advised where me grandfather was rather than looking for him.
Always updated on how my grandfather has been getting on by various members of the team.
I always find my grandfather's room and communal areas to be very clean and well presented.

My wife's placement at Albany is very appropriate. Her care plan is responsive to her care and support needs and evidence involvement with other agencies/healthcare professions.
I just wish there were more disabled persons in her age group.
There is my wife, plus one other resident who are both 65. All other residents are more than 12 years older than that, although my wife seems quite happy here most of the time. For the first three years she was here, I used to help with the other residents and organise activities, but I have been told I can no longer do so until I have been on a training course to become a volunteer.

Under new management, The Albany is now a much better run and happier ship than it was a year ago and as a result, there is a lower turnover of carers. However, they work long, hard hours and while they are always diligent, concerned and kind, they rarely have time to spend with the residents, especially those who are bed bound, as the scale of their job is so demanding. The nurses are highly qualified, experienced, friendly and excellent at managing the health and welfare of their patient's complex needs and react fast to emergencies. The cleanliness of the rooms is good. For those residents who want to participate, there is a wide range of activities run by an outstanding activities manager. The dining toom facilities have recently been refurbished and are always clean and well-maintained. The quality of the food is disappointingly institutional. There is a constant supply of beverages for residents and visitors who are always made to feel welcome. There is a good relationship with a local GP who makes visits to those in need. The manager has a very good understanding of the capacity of the home and the capabilities of the staff and is always willing to listen.

We are sorry to hear your concerns about the food and dining here at The Albany. At The Albany, we firmly believe that when you eat well, you live well too. This is a core part of our Brighterkind philosophy of care, centring on good nutrition and the importance of mealtimes as a social occasion. All of our food is prepared in-house and is extremely fresh.
We would love to invite you in for a meal with your relative if you are keen to do so. If there is anything you would like to discuss further, please contact customercare@brighterkind.com or pop into the home anytime. Many thanks, Lynn Gray Home

The Albany is extremely well run with a welcoming friendly atmosphere. The level of care is excellent; the staff, without exception, are professional but treat each resident as a person. They look after the needs of the whole person, not just their physical well- being. The Albany is a 'CARE HOME' but it is above all a 'home from home' for the residents.

From the moment we walk through the doors it was like home. The staff went out of their way to make us all comfortable. I would like to wish the Albany and staff all the best for the future.
Nothing seems to much for the staff or the manager.
I was made welcome by all staff as I walked through the doors to see my mother in law. My daughter and I were treated with respect from every one, if I had to give stars it would be 5 KEEP THE GREAT WORK GOING GUYS well done.
