Mum became a resident after struggling to stay independent. She is over 90 and has Alzheimer's. The staff at Acorn Court welcomed her, settled her in very quickly, and have been wonderful carers since. The activities organised at the home are outstanding and have given Mum a new lease of life. I have
quite a collection of photos showing Mum dancing and laughing! Mum is now quite unwell but I have the comfort of knowing that she is in excellent hands. I am so grateful to the staff and thank them with all my heart.

My parents have been residents in Acorn Court since March 2021 and both are very happy. My mother was released into the team's care from a period in hospital, with 24-hour nursing needs, limited mobility, and dementia, and my father decided to join her the same month, following his own dementia diagnosis.
Every team member I've met has been friendly, responsive, and kind - my parents have nothing but praise for the staff. Bedrooms and shared areas are clean and well maintained, food is well prepared, with plenty of choice. My parents enjoy the indoor creative activities and music. Fees seem reasonable, though we've not yet experienced any anniversary care plan review. Facilities are good, though during the pandemic (our only experience to date), communications can be challenging, especially out of office hours. My father has a mobile phone but unfortunately, network coverage is poor. We can communicate via email on his iPad though the WiFi/Broadband seems to struggle with video calls.

During the last twelve months, visiting has been limited and by appointment in accordance with Government Guidelines. That said I have been kept informed of any relevant information regarding my sister’s circumstances, ie health (doctors' visits and hospital appointments). The care home provides a variety
of daily activities and entertainment for all residents able to participate. Residents are encouraged to socialise in comfortable lounges/dining rooms. Throughout the year reception always looks amazing decorated accordingly, Easter, Remembrance Day, and Christmas time.

My father has been a resident since June this year which has been difficult with COVID restrictions but he has settled in well. He has Alzheimer’s so isn’t totally ‘with it’ all of the time but he is happy to stay at Acorn Court when I leave after a visit which is very comforting for the family. Well
done to all the staff caring for everyone during this difficult time.

A safe and caring environment for my mother's dementia care. Carers, nurses, and staff at reception are very friendly and very helpful. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and kept extremely clean. Comforting to know the residents are in safe hands.

I am extremely happy with the care my Mother is given. She always appears clean, smells lovely, and loves the staff. Some visits are very difficult as it depends on how Mum feels that day but the staff make all the difference to her and myself.

I appreciate that it must have been extremely difficult, in the course of the past two years, to manage a care home effectively. But my mum cannot care for herself and although I have mentioned this a number of times to staff and have had a meeting with the care home manager and staff, I do find that
Mum is not kept regularly clean in regards to:- dirty face (dirty nose, mouth) fingernails (dirty, long). At a high level things are not too bad, but I do believe she is not getting the detailed care she can reasonably expect.

The staff at times can be extremely rude especially the main receptionist. Also one of the nurses spoke to us in an inexcusable manner.
During the time my relative was there, they were hardly clean, dressed inappropriately, and at times not in their own clothes.
Some of my relative's clothes have
gone missing or were damaged in their laundry system also.
Even their care logs were not correct at times calling them another person in notes, saying they could walk, etc when they couldn’t.
Also, my relative was left out of a lot of activities they had on and seemed to be left in her room most days alone.
There is one positive to their home and that’s another staff member, who is sometimes front of house, who was always polite, smiling, and helpful who should really be front of house, rather than the other person, who never acknowledged you and was at times huffing and eye-rolling because you dare to ask a question.
When my relative left no one, except one of the nurses who escorted Mum out that day, who bought her down said goodbye. I’m just glad they are out of that place.

My mother has been a resident for nearly 2 years now. She found it difficult to settle at first but the team were a real help with making the transition from her home to Acorn Court. As Mum's dementia has progressed, the level of patience and care required by the team has increased. They are all wonderful
in knowing when and just how much support she needs and I cannot fault the amount and creativity of the activities provided allowing all the residents to be involved. Having the video call facility over the pandemic year has been a wonderful way of keeping in touch, even if Mum isn't too sure who she is talking to, and being able to view photos of their activities on their Facebook page has given me peace of mind. Mum is relaxed and enjoying all that is on offer - especially the music man. Thank you.

Acorn Court has been my Dad's home for nearly 4 years following a fall that left him physically immobile. He also has Parkinson's. My Mum joined him there 3 years ago. The care they receive is thoughtful and compassionate and takes account of the people they are and the interests they have. They would
not be alive today without the care they receive at Acorn Court.

Acorn Court wonderful, friendly - I think perfect in every way. My mother was there for her end of life care and I cannot fault a thing. We even had the wake - or celebration of mum's life as I prefer to call it - here! it was wonderful. All the staff are so friendly and they will do all they can to
help and support both families and residents alike. It was one of the hardest times of my life but they were all wonderful. The greatest part also, is my mum and dad had recently celebrated their Diamond (60th) wedding anniversary, and Mum is here and out of the hospital, allowed them to reconnect as a couple in so much that they had time, they ate together when Mum was able to. Mum had her hair done (1st time in 4 months as no option in hospital) and it lifted her immensely. I cannot put into words how grateful I am to everyone and I 100% recommend Acorn Court! Everyone working here is so precious and kind. Thank you ALL so so much for making such a horrible time so bearable.

This is such a compassionate care home. My mum has been welcomed with genuine affection and her needs met with kindness. The care staff made time to get to know her properly, having first known her as the wife of a former resident. Mum feels safe and nurtured. The professionalism and efficiency of the
home in every respect, whether it concerns relatives or the resident is beyond belief. Ten out of ten doesn't start to reflect the excellence here.

I hold Power of attorney for an elderly friend who sadly suffers from dementia. He is being looked after at Acorn Court. The staff are wonderful and demonstrate real and compassionate care for him. I cannot speak highly enough of this care home. There is a genuine atmosphere of happiness and professionalism.
My friend has settled in well and enjoys the attention and affection shown by all the staff.

Today is Valentines Day. I was invited to a celebration lunch with my husband. The table was laid with rose petals, name places and heart-shaped serviettes, soft background music played. Paula

Paula Deadman

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2023

Paula knew she wanted to become a nurse from the age of five when, during regular hospital visits to see her grandma, she found pleasure in delivering the water jugs and chatting to the other patients with the nurses on the ward. From then on, she knew one day she would become a nurse and that passion, to make a difference, never wavered.

Her early career saw Paula working as a pharmacy technician and in her mid-20s she made the move to return to her early love and studied to become a registered nurse.

Since then, she’s gained a wealth of experience, working as a staff nurse, sister and matron in hospitals and the community and then as a care home manager at a local nursing home. After joining our Acorn Court family as our director of nursing, Paula was then promoted to our home manager in 2024.

Mum to two sons, James and William, Paula married husband Adam in 2009 and completing their family are Elsie and Dottie, their two rescue greyhounds. Her love of baking cakes keeps Paula busy in her spare time when she particularly enjoys not only baking cakes but also decorating them into all sorts of wonderful creations!

Speaking about Acorn Court, Paula said: “Our amazing residents, their families and our team are why I love being here. Being part of our residents’ lives is such an honour and working as part of a loving team who are all there to make every day special for our residents is such a privilege.”

Ami

Ami Higgins

Ami’s journey in care began at just 15, volunteering at Acorn Court, where her mother was home manager. Inspired by her compassion and seeing the difference she made in the lives she touched, Ami knew she would follow a similar career path.


Over the past 14 years, Ami has grown from a carer to a Care Services Manager, embracing every role with love and dedication. Her commitment to resident well-being led to the creation of the award-winning ‘Little Acorns’ programme, fostering intergenerational connections. Ami is devoted to enhancing care services and empowering her team to be the best that they can be.


In her spare time, Ami loves to relax by gardening and spending time with her young family.
