When we first visited The Bernard Sunley Nursing Home, the manager and staff were all very welcoming, they showed us to the room where our friend would be moving into, this room was bright and airy. It was a nice size with an en suite. When our friend arrived at the home, she was welcomed with friendliness and care. The whole experience of her stay was really lovely and all members of the staff even the cleaners and maintenance man were happy and chatted with you. I would recommend this lovely home as it was perfect.

All the staff at The Bernard Sunley Nursing and Dementia Care Home, from the management team, the nursing staff, the carers and kitchen staff to all the professionals brought in for activities etc - were all exceptional. Both my mother-in-law and father-in-law were treated with dignity and were made to feel totally at home until the end of their lives. Thank you so much. My ratings say it all!

My dad was a resident in the Bernard Sunley Home for four years. He moved in to be with his wife, my stepmother who needed nursing care. From the outset, the staff were welcoming and most accommodating. Dad and Mam shared a bedroom and had a second room used as a sitting room so it was very much their home. When she became too ill to care for on the ground floor, Dad kept his room with access to the courtyard garden which became his solace, pride and joy. Again, he was supported by staff to tend his garden and share his tasty tomatoes! Dad gradually needed more help and this was kindly, skilfully and professionally given. The relationship between him and staff was wonderful.

I live in North Nottinghamshire, so am very grateful for the support I have been given with regular updates and involvement with care plans over the phone. From cleaners to carers, their provision has been excellent.

My father had been in hospital for seven weeks and was not in a good way.
The staff at The Bernard Sunley Nursing and Dementia Care Home turned him around and made him really comfortable.
Sadly he was only there a few months but I cannot fault the home at all, right from organising the release from the hospital and transport to the home, all the way through to the end of his life.
All the staff are so caring and helpful, we were able to visit at any time, the food was very good quality and doctors, chiropodists etc were always available.
They also helped us arrange a birthday party along with a huge cake which my father remembered for his remaining days.

I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

My 93-year-old mother was admitted to The Bernard Sunley Nursing and Dementia Care Home for care following a traumatic period of treatment in hospital for a fractured hip.
The staff at Bernard Sunley were brilliant. They immediately reacted to the gravity of the situation, liaising with the GP to implement this and then did everything they could to ensure my mother was kept comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt welcome and supported whenever we visited.
Sadly, my mother's time at Bernard Sunley was very short but we would just like to say thank you so much to the staff for your kindness during her last few weeks.

I have not commented on the activities simply because my mother was not well enough to participate.

My mum spent the last two months of her life at Bernard Sunley Care Home. From the day she moved in, to the day she died, she was cared for with love and dignity. Every member of staff from nurses, management, to carers, made her time as comfortable and pleasant as possible. She was happy here and loved her carers. They were positive and took time to get to know her and her likes and dislikes. I would recommend the home, highly.

Mum has been at the Bernard Sunley for four and a half years. Sadly, she died at the beginning of November. Thank you to all the staff who cared for her during her time here. Everyone was always welcoming and friendly and staff were comforting to me on the night she died and during her last week. Thank you for all the cups of tea and cake and to those staff that popped in to see Mum. It has been a pleasure to be a part of The Bernard Sunley family. It was reassuring for me to know that when she could no longer live in her own home she was being well cared for. All the staff were always happy to chat and welcomed me and any members of the family who visited, especially when I brought Mum's very young great-granddaughter into the home! Although Mum didn't understand who she was, Mum would chat away to her and became much more animated which was lovely to see.

The front office staff were excellent in responding to the organisation of respite care needs of my Uncle. The home is spotlessly clean and there seemed to be plenty of staff to cater for everyone. Rooms were spacious and there seemed to be an abundance of communal rooms for those residents who sought company.

My mother-in-law arrived for a week's respite following surgery. It is clear that The Bernard Sunley is very well-led. During her time there, her care was exemplary; it truly is a home-from-home. All the staff were wonderful, and myself and the family couldn't speak highly enough of them. The food was amazing and the care was even better. The team showed great compassion and were caring and respectful. We would thoroughly recommend The Bernard Sunley wholeheartedly.

Dad was admitted to Bernard Sunley during the Covid lockdown. We couldn't view and had to go on word of mouth and our gut feelings talking to the manager on the phone. Visiting was restricted to behind-glass visits. Dad appeared to be cared for and the staff gave us updates. Now we can visit freely, we can see the wonderful care Dad has received. The staff are so friendly, caring and making us so welcome. But above all, it is their devotion and positive attitudes that make The Bernard Sunley Dad's home. A home amongst friends, with a family feel.

My mother was admitted into the home directly from hospital. From day 1, it was clear that she would be well looked after. Staff are very pleasant, helpful, caring and understanding, taking time to talk to her and understand her. All staff on her floor knew her and were knowledgeable about her circumstances. The manager and reception were fully up to date with my mother and very quickly got to know relatives and visitors. Very well done and thank you for what you have done.

Appropriate care was provided for my Mother throughout her four and a half years at the home, through a period of progressive Dementia and declining physical health. There were always good proactive discussions when the level/nature of care needed to be adjusted. I had an excellent relationship communicating with all staff at the home.

Nursing homes are all about the staff - their attitude, commitment and love. Whilst there are always going to be the occasional wobbles, particularly during covid-19 outbreaks nationally and the necessary guidelines, the focus of the staff and the wellbeing, care and happiness of the residents is amazing.

Our lovely grandma passed whilst staying in Bernard Sunley. She was treated with dignity until the very end. We couldn’t have wished for her to be surrounded by kinder or more caring people - the residents there are very lucky to have the fabulous staff they have. The nurses were so sweet to our Grandy. They did everything they could and more to make sure she was comfortable and calm. She left this earth surrounded by love and that’s all you can ask for really.

I was impressed from my first encounter with the staff at Bernard Sunley. My father was discharged there straight from hospital and it was a very worrying time. Everyone, from the manager, the deputy manager and each and every member of the nursing and the full range of care staff did all that was possible to make his stay there comfortable. Visiting was made as easy as it could be by the staff on reception. Everyone was thoughtful, caring and professional. My family and I cannot thank them enough.

Bernard Sunley cared for my Grandmother for 8 years. Not once did we ever have cause for any concern. Everyone was fantastic and very caring, right up to the very end of her life in 2013. My mother always said that the Bernard Sunley would be the only home she would want to go to. Following a fall at the beginning of November and Alzheimer's, Mum ended up in the local hospital for 24 hours. We received a call from them, saying they did not have the staffing to look after Mum as she has a broken shoulder and with Alzheimer's, they were discharging her back to her home, requiring 24 hr care. 'Panic stations'! The only thing I could think of was Bernard Sunley! One call was all it took for the panic and heartache to disappear! The staff were brilliant and took complete control, dealing with the hospital. Within a few hours, Mum was in her own room surrounded by her own belongings, home from home. We can't thank them enough! The care since, has been exemplary.

Andy Cumper
Andy CumperJob Title:Care Home ManagerJoined: 2014

I first started with Bernard Sunley in 2014 as an Administrator and soon progressed to Office Manager – these roles allowed me to build trust and relationships with staff, residents and their families. In early 2018 I was promoted to Home Manager and it is my vision to build a home that is fully integrated in its community and to expand on relationships with local services, groups and organisations to enhance the welfare and opportunities for our residents.

Bernard Sunley a welcoming, friendly home where residents and families are encouraged to engage in all aspects of the home from activities to discussions on what they would like to see happening at the home. The atmosphere is relaxed and staff and residents form great relationships built on trust and care.

Quite simply the best thing about my job is the people. We take the time to get to know each resident who lives with us – their likes, dislikes, the lives they have lived and the sort of life they would like to continue to live in our home. To see a family happy and at ease knowing their relative is well looked after and happy is a great reward. But perhaps the biggest reward is being allowed to share a smile, a story, a memory, with some of our residents and knowing that they are happy to give that time to me.
