On the whole carers work very hard to create a caring environment and genuinely seem to care for the residents. However, they are frequently under time pressure from under staffing and sickness absence. This means they they may not be able to spent sufficient time with individual residents, especially
those who are not mobile, and who therefore can feel isolated.

Individual carers are mostly good, occasionally do not respond to residents who are speaking to them. Training in communication skills has been organised to hopefully this will improve. Some carers go the extra mile, and relate to the residents, others do not really listen and laugh when they are speaking.

Nursing is variable with failure to notice symptoms of infection and lack of knowledge of geriatric immune response (or lack of); one or two very good and sensitive, and listen to residents and family. There seems to be a fear of asking the GP, and are reactive rather than proactive with health issues unfortunately.

First class service, a place I would hope to go to when my time comes. The care they give to my wife is friendly, my wife likes a joke and has fun. Of course she would be happy at home with me, but that's impossible. It would be nice to see her out of bed for the summer.

My cousin has been well cared for generally. Her hearing aids are often problematic - she says that when she is washed in the mornings the aids are frequently not removed, so often have water in the tubes or when they are removed they are done roughly and tubes have fallen out. We have had to take them
to the hospital for repairs.

Over the last 2 months we have noticed a great improvement in my mothers communication skills. Since having daily activities she hardly disturbs her room at all. She seems very content there after 16 months there. The staff are very respectful of their dignity and very kind. All staff are very approachable,
if you have any queries.
Reply from Sibby Sawyer, General Manager at Barchester Wykeham House Care HomeThank you for your kind comments. There has been a strong drive within the team at Wykeham House to improve the social life of residents within the home especially on our Memory Lanes as well as engagement with the community in Horley. I am pleased that the result is a direct impact on your mother's communication skills. We will continue in this direction and your on going support is instrumental in all we are aiming to achieve

Family members were invited to have a Sunday roast with the family member who resides at Wykeham House. Wonderful occasion. Well organised. Lovely atmosphere. Food amazing. Great occasion and look forward to a get together.
Reply from Sibby Sawyer, General Manager at Barchester Wykeham House Care HomeIt was a real pleasure for me and my team to share a simple tradition such as a Sunday Roast with all the residents and their families. Something that all our residents would have at one time enjoyed at home with their families and loved ones. Thank you for joining us and supporting our activities programme.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.399)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.399) out of 10 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.537 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (128 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 188 Ratings = 4.537
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.862 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2. 15 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.2 = 0.987
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
