Mum appreciated the support given to her post-operatively. The food was excellent and staff very caring and friendly. (However, someone forgot to help with her shower I had been arranging) so needed to find another person.

We are so pleased Mum is here, the staff have been wonderful to her and continue to help her with her issues. Now that new management have been brought in we feel it can only get even better.

Only a couple of tiny issues:

Smell - whilst this is much better it could be further enhanced by more

deep cleaning and washing down of woodwork, nice smellies.

If residents are in their rooms, there should always be a knock on the door first - this has not been consistent.

We feel we can approach staff with any issues. Thank you.

Reply from Shirley Emilio, General Manager at Barchester Wykeham House Care HomeThank you very much for your feedback. We are continually looking at how we can improve our service. We have door hangers which are being used to indicate what peoples status may be as well as training to transmit the importance of our knock and wait policy before entering bedrooms.
Re the aroma in the home, this has been resolved with new products. Once again thank you.

My mother has been a resident of Wykeham House since April 2017. She has been very happy there and well looked after. She had a problem recently that she felt strongly enough about to want to complain to the manager. The manager of the care home dealt with it kindly, especially as my mother was rather
confused about what she told her. The issue was followed up and I was informed by telephone and email of the result. I was pleased with the sympathetic way the matter was handled and appreciate the sometimes difficult circumstances under which the staff work. The nursing and caring staff always seem to be cheerful and patient with the residents.

Mum was admitted to respite care following hospital. She was cared for excellently. Staff were welcoming, cheerful, helpful and efficient. The building was in good repair with only the smallest blemishes. The food was good and appreciated by an elderly lady with poor appetite following an illness. The
attractive presentation was able to inspire good eating. All in all a great stay.

When my mother first went into Wykeham House two and a half years ago she was given two weeks to a month to live as her weight was so low.
With the care of the home, my mother put on weight and is still with us two and a half years on.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, always ready to listen
to what you have to say and take on board any concerns you may have.
The home is always clean and I have never found mum unclean, she is bed bound and has never had a bed sore.
It is a very caring home and I would definitely recommend it.

Since the CQC report, much activity has taken place (for the better). Many changes have taken place on the management side. This brought many outside personnel walking about giving their views on what should be done; this has an upsetting mood on the residents, seeing them as strangers.

The whole

atmosphere changed, especially on the so called management side, no welcoming, smiling faces or greetings until the new manager came on the scene. The atmosphere changed all being with a smile and "Good morning" etc. The (I'm the boss) attitude over the past couple of months has gone, everyone is happy and talkative.

The care and attention given to my wife is second to none, although she is sometimes difficult, they persevere with her and get a result. I cannot find any faults in the paperwork etc; all up to date.

Much has been accomplished in the past few months. The new feature - 1st-floor memory lane (with garden feel) everyone speaks about as a good feature. Why? I took my wife out in front of the mural on the wall and mentioned the fact it is a nice scene, her reaction after a few moments was Richmond Park, it reactivated her memory of years ago spending time in Richmond Park. The place she recalled is now known as "Isabella Plantation".
So, I'm just one of many people who are glad to see and hear that the garden feature is staying, and with the new manager in the chair, management is going in the right direction too.

My Mum has been a resident at Wykeham House for just over a year. I can honestly say that the staff at Wykeham have made this very difficult time for our family bearable. They are so caring and patient. There has been a change in the management recently which has caused a few ripples with the staff
but all seems to be settling. I hope Barchester appreciates the staff they have at Wykeham.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.648)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.648) out of 10 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.648 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (195 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 261 Ratings = 4.648
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I hope I am still here at Wykeham House for many years to come. I look forward to continuing to work with Barchester to improve my knowledge and grow within my role as Head of Maintenance. I look forward to refurbishing our courtyard, upgrading our garden furniture and of course, I hope to continue fulfilling residents wishes. Resident safety is my priority, so every day I make sure our home is compliant and secure for them and our team.
