Reviews

9.4 Barchester Wykeham House Care Home has a Review Score of 9.4 (9.445)

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 33 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.445 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (201 Excellents x 5) + (157 Goods x 4) + (22 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 384 Ratings = 4.445

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 15.2 positive Reviews (76 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 18 Reviews ÷ 15.2 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I have just had an episode of respite care. If there was an award for outstanding care, Wykeham House would win.
The entire staff are so welcoming and caring, it would be impossible to single out anyone.
The food was very good and there is always a choice.
The activities team try so hard to keep everyone engaged. Please make sure you let the staff know they are highly valued.
I have decided this is where I wish to be when the time comes.

My mother has been a resident of Wykeham House since April 2017. She has been very happy there and well looked after. She had a problem recently that she felt strongly enough about to want to complain to the manager. The manager of the care home dealt with it kindly, especially as my mother was rather confused about what she told her. The issue was followed up and I was informed by telephone and email of the result. I was pleased with the sympathetic way the matter was handled and appreciate the sometimes difficult circumstances under which the staff work. The nursing and caring staff always seem to be cheerful and patient with the residents.

We are so pleased Mum is here, the staff have been wonderful to her and continue to help her with her issues. Now that new management have been brought in we feel it can only get even better.

Only a couple of tiny issues:

Smell - whilst this is much better it could be further enhanced by more deep cleaning and washing down of woodwork, nice smellies.

If residents are in their rooms, there should always be a knock on the door first - this has not been consistent.

We feel we can approach staff with any issues. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are continually looking at how we can improve our service. We have door hangers which are being used to indicate what peoples status may be as well as training to transmit the importance of our knock and wait policy before entering bedrooms.
Re the aroma in the home, this has been resolved with new products. Once again thank you.

Mum was admitted to respite care following hospital. She was cared for excellently. Staff were welcoming, cheerful, helpful and efficient. The building was in good repair with only the smallest blemishes. The food was good and appreciated by an elderly lady with poor appetite following an illness. The attractive presentation was able to inspire good eating. All in all a great stay.

Dear Chrissie, Thank you very much for your review, it is lovely to hear and that we were able to support your mum after being in the hospital. I will be sharing this with all the team.

When my mother first went into Wykeham House two and a half years ago she was given two weeks to a month to live as her weight was so low.
With the care of the home, my mother put on weight and is still with us two and a half years on.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, always ready to listen to what you have to say and take on board any concerns you may have.
The home is always clean and I have never found mum unclean, she is bed bound and has never had a bed sore.
It is a very caring home and I would definitely recommend it.

Since the CQC report, much activity has taken place (for the better). Many changes have taken place on the management side. This brought many outside personnel walking about giving their views on what should be done; this has an upsetting mood on the residents, seeing them as strangers.

The whole atmosphere changed, especially on the so called management side, no welcoming, smiling faces or greetings until the new manager came on the scene. The atmosphere changed all being with a smile and "Good morning" etc. The (I'm the boss) attitude over the past couple of months has gone, everyone is happy and talkative.

The care and attention given to my wife is second to none, although she is sometimes difficult, they persevere with her and get a result. I cannot find any faults in the paperwork etc; all up to date.

Much has been accomplished in the past few months. The new feature - 1st-floor memory lane (with garden feel) everyone speaks about as a good feature. Why? I took my wife out in front of the mural on the wall and mentioned the fact it is a nice scene, her reaction after a few moments was Richmond Park, it reactivated her memory of years ago spending time in Richmond Park. The place she recalled is now known as "Isabella Plantation".
So, I'm just one of many people who are glad to see and hear that the garden feature is staying, and with the new manager in the chair, management is going in the right direction too.

My Mum has been a resident at Wykeham House for just over a year. I can honestly say that the staff at Wykeham have made this very difficult time for our family bearable. They are so caring and patient. There has been a change in the management recently which has caused a few ripples with the staff but all seems to be settling. I hope Barchester appreciates the staff they have at Wykeham.

Staff are always so friendly, a nice space to come and see my Nan. The staff are always smiling and happy to help. The room is okay, a nice place for her to relax and have her things around her. Rooms could be a little bit more "homely". The beds don't seem that comfy.
Thank you though for having my Nan, she has really settled in well. Thanks to you all.

Dear Ralph, thank you for your feedback. Thank you for choosing us and we will continue to work hard to meet your mum's care needs and make her stay with us a happy fulfilling one.

When I viewed Wykeham, I was told that there are a lot of activities for the residents. When my mother started, I discovered there wasn't much daily activity and one of the activity coordinators had one day as a carer which left no one to do activities, or if there were, very little by someone else. I felt there could have been more time listening to music rather than watching the telly. My mother is used to more interaction with people which I feel she isn't getting at Wykeham.

Sibby Sawyer, General Manager at Barchester Wykeham House Care Home responded to this review on 12 Dec 2016:

Thank you for your feedback and critic. There are two staff members that make up the Activity Team in the home, and between them have 70 hours per week. In addition, there is another staff member that supports them two days a week. This means every day for 7 days of the week, there is always someone in the home who can lead and coordinate the activities in the home. We, however, need to address and work a bit more on where and how those activities are provided to ensure all four living areas in the home share, take part and enjoy the program that is in place. I will also be looking specifically at the interaction and engagement with other people that your mother needs, and will give you direct feedback on how we progress in meeting this for her.

I have always found the care my Aunt has received in these last five years as very good. There has been much improvement in the last 2 years since the new manager has taken over such as facilities, training, new staff, decor, activities and a lot of care to all residents to make everyone feel at home. Residents families are given a lot of respect. My Aunt's younger brother died recently and I was entering hospital that week and too ill to visit. The staff were extremely helpful and caring to my grieving Aunt until I was able to visit a week or so later. This was much appreciated. My Aunt will be 100 soon.

Thank you! Your comments are appreciated and will be shared with the team.

It is now five years since my friend had her stroke and had to make Barchester Wykeham House her home- to begin with, she was quite bright but over the years appeared to have lost her spirit. Recent months have shown massive improvements, this I believe is due to good management, a great occupational therapist and improved care and observation. I have only marked care as satisfactory because in some cases this still needs improvement- but is improving.

Thank you, Debbie, it was a pleasure. I hope you and the family are well, please visit anytime. Thank you for your kindness as well.

Food very good. Bed is a bit hard, position within the home not acceptable for someone who has all their faculties as was told the room would be upstairs and ended up on ground floor with more dementia related residents.
Staff very helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for me.

Thank you for your response and your very positive comments on food, the staff and their service. I am glad to see that in that you rated those areas excellent as well as care/support, that you were treated with dignity and the cleanliness of the home. I am sorry that we were not able to accommodate you in your room/area of choice for your short stay with us. Should you return for another period of stay in the future we will endeavour to meet your preference.

When visiting my mum the staff are always very friendly and welcoming and my mum seems very well cared for. I have nothing but admiration for the staff at Wykeham House.

Thank you for your positive comments. I am very proud of the team at Wykeham House and we will continue to work hard to make improvements in all aspects of our work

On the whole carers work very hard to create a caring environment and genuinely seem to care for the residents. However, they are frequently under time pressure from under staffing and sickness absence. This means they they may not be able to spent sufficient time with individual residents, especially those who are not mobile, and who therefore can feel isolated.

Individual carers are mostly good, occasionally do not respond to residents who are speaking to them. Training in communication skills has been organised to hopefully this will improve. Some carers go the extra mile, and relate to the residents, others do not really listen and laugh when they are speaking.

Nursing is variable with failure to notice symptoms of infection and lack of knowledge of geriatric immune response (or lack of); one or two very good and sensitive, and listen to residents and family. There seems to be a fear of asking the GP, and are reactive rather than proactive with health issues unfortunately.

Thank you for your feedback. Good and constructive critic is always welcome and appreciated. Your compliments will be shared with the team and your critic and suggestions used to address improvements for the home. Please feel free to see me in person to discuss how we can all work together for the benefit of those living in our home and anyone using the service

First class service, a place I would hope to go to when my time comes. The care they give to my wife is friendly, my wife likes a joke and has fun. Of course she would be happy at home with me, but that's impossible. It would be nice to see her out of bed for the summer.

My cousin has been well cared for generally. Her hearing aids are often problematic - she says that when she is washed in the mornings the aids are frequently not removed, so often have water in the tubes or when they are removed they are done roughly and tubes have fallen out. We have had to take them to the hospital for repairs.

Thank you Mrs JM. It was a pleasure having you stay with us for respite. I am glad you found the nurses and carers lovely and l hope you will come back whenever you need another break. Your compliments have been passed onto the staff.

Over the last 2 months we have noticed a great improvement in my mothers communication skills. Since having daily activities she hardly disturbs her room at all. She seems very content there after 16 months there. The staff are very respectful of their dignity and very kind. All staff are very approachable, if you have any queries.

Thank you for your kind comments. There has been a strong drive within the team at Wykeham House to improve the social life of residents within the home especially on our Memory Lanes as well as engagement with the community in Horley. I am pleased that the result is a direct impact on your mother's communication skills. We will continue in this direction and your on going support is instrumental in all we are aiming to achieve

Completely satisfied by care in this nursing home, staff from manager down are all superb in what they do, they seem to take client requests seriously and compassionately. Overall my family are delighted with the treatment my wife is getting.

It was a real pleasure for me and my team to share a simple tradition such as a Sunday Roast with all the residents and their families. Something that all our residents would have at one time enjoyed at home with their families and loved ones. Thank you for joining us and supporting our activities programme.

Since moving to Wykeham House just over 6 months ago my mother has really responded well to the care and attention provided. Her family all feel she is in safe hands because the entire staff have shown great care and respect for her as an individual.
