Since my parents came to live in Barchester Wykeham House Care Home in February 2024, it has given me and my family a calm and sense they are safe and looked after.
Today, a summer bash was lovely, residents and families joining together and having fun.
Amazing staff, especially the event organiser
and bubbly, smiley lady on reception (at weekends).

General visiting of a relative. -
The food at the fete was good but I do not feel that a budget of £6.60 a day is sufficient when I need to spend £10 a day on my own food. Good nutritious food is essential. We pay £7500 per month for care.
Reply from Feedback Team, The Feedback Team at Barchester Wykeham House Care HomeThanks for your review, we're sorry to learn you weren't happy with our menus. We've taken your feedback on board and shared it with the team, who have recently created a food committee that attends monthly meetings between our chef and residents to review all of our food offerings, and I'm pleased to share that the first meeting went well. The meetings enable the home to review what they offer and allow time for the residents to share their meal suggestions, and feedback on what they would like more/less of and make sure everyone's preferences are factored into the menus. Our budget is an average guide, but as the cost of food is high at the moment, we buy some food items in bulk from our suppliers which provides us with better prices than you would see in a shop and this is why the budget seems less than you would be able to cater personally. Our home team is on hand if you wish to share any suggestions, or comments or for any other support. Kind regards, Customer Feedback Team.

I recently had surgery and as I live on my own I didn't want to come home to an empty house so I booked myself into Wykeham House for a week.
I found it very comfortable and friendly with a family feel about it. All the carers were excellent and I did have a few minor problems which were dealt with
very speedily. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. It took away my anxiety of looking after myself.

This Christmas was lovely for my father, with much more care from the activities team who knew my father well when choosing gifts. The home looked beautiful with Christmas decorations. The year before was very poor. Since the new activity team has brought a lot to the home through the year who came
in March 2023, you can see how much the girls enjoy what happens.

In my experience, Wycombe House is a warm homely place, the staff are amazing, from the receptionists through to all the care staff, and the activity staff, who are very caring. Also, able to have a laugh and a good chat too! The food always looks nice, got to be the best home around!

My husband, who has Alzheimer's and Lewy Bodies Dementia has been at Wykeham House since May 2022.
The staff, from every department, are wonderful with him. He is treated with kindness, love and great respect.
All (whether working on his floor or not) know his name, will listen to his chatter no
matter how busy they are and, if the music gets his feet tapping, give him a little dance.
There are many activities which he is encouraged to join, regular visiting entertainers and trips out in the minibus.
The atmosphere is one of peace and calm.
I know he is safe and happy there and cannot praise everyone enough for the care that he is being given.

Every member of staff play their part in the care for the residents. Not only did they provide outstanding care for my grandmother, they looked after us too, especially on those difficult visits and during her end-of-life care. We are so pleased she spent her last three years of life in such a happy,
engaging and caring home.

My dad had been with Barchester Wykeham House Care Home for a few months. The friendliest and most warmest staff ever. They made him feel very welcome right from the start and he loved going out on the day trips.
When Dad passed away, I rushed to be with him and the peaceful beautiful surroundings
I encountered made everything so easy to deal with. Two staff were lying with him, holding his hands together with mood lighting and music. Just beautiful.
Thank you Wykeham House. It's been a pleasure.

Wykeham House is an excellent care facility where leadership is strong, and the care delivery to my father, living with dementia, was fantastic. Dad was admitted for palliative care, with three months to live; he lived three years and eleven months! We, as a family, were cared for by a dedicated, professional
team. It is hard to find the words to express our lasting gratitude and admiration to all the staff - a superb dementia facility that we highly recommend.

Very happy with our choice. Mum has settled fairly well. Some carers are a lot more favourable than others. Integration with activities has enabled her to be wheeled out of her room and mix with others. So happy that the nurses and carers have got her out of bed each day. Food is a problem as she is
a plain eater so needs assistance with eating and choices.

The sales department was excellent at selling the home and the facilities, but in reality, none of their promises held true!
My mum, 85, with a fractured back stayed at the home for 3 weeks for rehabilitation.
She was given one-half bath and 2 showers during that time, which were rushed and the dining
experience was no better with an empty restaurant.
The nurses/carers although some were nice were too busy to take care of any needs of Mum as they were too busy with other patients!
Breakfast at 9 am, lunch at 1 pm and supper at 5 pm, that was it! Any requests for food later were declined!
Despite the request for physiotherapy treatment, none happened!
There was a flu bug in the home and a stomach bug doing the rounds, and very few caters felt the need to wear masks when going from room to room!
At night times there was constant noise from alarms and nurse calls.
My mum also spent some weeks in an NHS home, she got more care and certainly more showers in those three weeks.

My mum, who is 98 years old, has been at Wykeham House since April this year. It was a massive change for her, but I have nothing but praise for how welcoming the staff was and how much care was taken to make her feel at home. She has some dementia, and their care has enabled me to enjoy being with
my mum and not have to worry about her well-being. I was worried at first, but all fears have been alleviated over the months, and my mum has been treated with dignity and kindness. She is happy and settled now, and although her memory and eyesight are not good, there have been lots of laughs and joy, which I am sure will continue. I cannot thank all the staff for the care and attention they give to my mum.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.648)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.648) out of 10 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.648 for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (195 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 261 Ratings = 4.648
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Wykeham House Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Head of Maintenance Joined: 2021

Hello, my name is Nick and I am the Head of Maintenance at Wykeham House. when the opportunity came up for me to work at Wykeham House I jumped at it. I have worked my way through the company from kitchen assistant to Maintenance. I always enjoy chatting with the residents, making sure they are comfortable and always leave them with a smile on their face. I moved to the maintenance department over 2 years ago and learnt how the building runs, as well as taking over the garden and making it a relaxing and pleasant place to sit with friends and families.

I hope I am still here at Wykeham House for many years to come. I look forward to continuing to work with Barchester to improve my knowledge and grow within my role as Head of Maintenance. I look forward to refurbishing our courtyard, upgrading our garden furniture and of course, I hope to continue fulfilling residents wishes. Resident safety is my priority, so every day I make sure our home is compliant and secure for them and our team.
