I arrived at Highgrove on 9th November 2024 following 3 weeks in hospital for hip surgery and a fractured spine. My room was bright and adequate. I would liked my bed sheets changed at least weekly!! Woken at 7am breakfast/cup of tea arrived at any time between 7.15-8.40am! Bathing/shower facilities
- excellent. Lunch and supper were disapoining, lacking in flavour and imagination. The Elvis afternoon enjoyable - buffet supper amazingly delicious. Physios generous with encouragement, the O.T in assessment and package care for my home discharge on 19th December. Without exception and under pressure I found all the staff excellent. Should I be unfortunate in the future to require nursing care, the observations aired would not preclude my returning to High Grove.
Reply from Paul Burns, Director at Victoria HighgroveThank you for your observations and I am sorry that there were some details that were not as you would hope. I am very surprised about the bed sheets since I do know this is done as a matter of course. We will however, endeavour to do better!

It would be nice to get out of your room and have a change of scene. The rooms comfortable and clean and I think the food could be made hotter and not cold or warm. The staff do their job and are always treated with respect.
Reply from Paul Burns, Director at Victoria HighgroveThank you for your comments, and I will certainly ensure the chef is made aware of your observation. We certainly don't wish the food to only be warm. I can only apologise.

My 86 year old Dad was in the Victoria, Highgrove Nursing Home from Jan 28th - Feb 12th inclusive. This was after he had been in the hospital for 7 weeks. He came here as a stepping stone to get him ready to get back to living independently.
The Highgrove was great for him. He had a large first-floor
bedroom at the rear with sea views. The whole property has a modern feel to it and is in a very good decorative order. The Staff were amazing with him and to us on our visits. The food was to a very good standard. The daily menus were well varied.
The Therapist Practitioner at the home was brilliant. She liaised with us throughout his stay and organised his discharge to our house. She even popped in yesterday to ours to check that all of the equipment heights, etc, were correct.
When visiting there is off road parking. We were also made very welcome and offered drinks. There is a nice Day/TV room on the lower ground floor with outlooks onto the Patio.
I would highly recommend the Highgrove.

The staff are darlings and everyone works together as a team. I was there for rehab and the therapy team are fabulous. The lounge is beautifully decorated. Everything is spotlessly clean. The nurses are geniuses at removing stitches.
It's totally let down by the food, which appears based round salt
and sugar. In comparison, I once spent 2 weeks in another home, where the food was excellent. At Highgrove salt-lick for replacing your electrolytes is called bacon and gammon. Since when is the egg in bacon and egg scrambled? A 'ham' sandwich was corned beef. The chicken pie was spoiled by salt. There are endless whips and mousses and cake. No fresh fruit. No milk. Bizarre 'sausage and mash': strange-tasting sausage the same colour inside and outside cut up on a bed of fake mash. A cold congealed ball of spaghetti with a smear of unpleasant sauce and toast labelled spaghetti on toast and not fit for consumption.
Reply from Paul Burns, Director at Victoria HighgroveI am so very sorry to read your feedback about the food at Highgrove. I must say we are not used to receiving such feedback and I am addressing your observations with both chefs. It is a terrible shame that you didn't seek to raise your concerns with our Manager who would have gladly sought to address your specific issues. As you will appreciate, alternative menu choices are available at all times and with bacon and egg you do not have to have scrambled eggs, we could have offered poached or fried for example. I further imagine that the staff made a mistake ordering you a corned beef sandwich when you wished for ham and I can only apologise. I will also address your overall concerns about salt and can assure you that the management and chefs are now very much aware of your thoughts. All of this will now be carefully monitored since we do not wish to receive such disappointing feedback and apologise for the disappointment this must have caused.

We have been very impressed by Victoria Highgrove and would recommend it to anyone looking for a nursing home for a relative. The staff are very professional and work extremely hard in sometimes difficult circumstances, clearly tailoring the care given, to match the needs of individual residents. This
applies to all staff including cleaners, carers, pts, physiotherapists, and nurses.
The building is well maintained and clearly decorated fairly recently. Our relative had their own TV and toilet. There was a choice of very good food available at mealtime so that there is something to suit everyone. The staff do an amazing job at Victoria Highgrove. Thank you!

I enjoyed staying at Victoria Highgrove very much. All the nurses, doctor, health care assistants and care home manager and all the staff were kind and helpful. I enjoyed most of the food, a good varied diet and lots of cups of tea. The place was clean and visitors were allowed to come at anytime. I
also was lucky to have a lovely view from my room of the sea.

My mother has been receiving convalescent care in the last month following a bad fall. During this time she has been treated with exceptional care, kindness and professionalism by each and every member of the care team, and in turn, they have offered me much support and guidance towards my mother's
recovery and future needs. Her room is comfortable and cleanliness is of a very high standard. The food at Highgrove is well worth a mention as it is of high quality; the chef is talented and produces daily menus that are nutritious, and flavoursome with surprising variation. I'm very grateful to all concerned for giving my mother the confidence and will to become stronger with a view to returning home.

My mother has been in your care since the 17th of June 2024 and cannot fault the facilities or the excellent care my mother has received. Mum is happy and comfortable. The staff are amazing and very caring in a joyful way. It truly is a pleasant facility and I honestly believe my mum would not still
be with us if it wasn't for the excellent care she receives in the home. Thank you.

The staff (all) our extremely caring and attentive. The rooms are kept clean and comfortable to a high standard. The senior members of staff have always been willing to listen to the needs of the residents with kindness and do their utmost to offer help, support and guidance. Along with encouragement
to work with other medical health personnel. Hence the continuous multi-team involvement which I personally couldn't fault. I have one regret and that is I didn't find Victoria Highgrove for my mother as well.

My time in Highgrove was excellent on every aspect. The care and support I received made it a very comfortable and content stay. A very pleasant room, more than enough food, a very nutritious menu. All the healthcare staff, doctors, nurses, physios, and occupational therapy, all gave me the confidence
to get better, not forgetting a well though out leisure time in the lounge. All in all, a great time and a nice cleaner.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.791)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.791) out of 10 for Victoria Highgrove is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 63 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 63 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.791 for Victoria Highgrove is calculated as follows: ( (592 Excellents x 5) + (112 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 722 Ratings = 4.791
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Victoria Highgrove is based on 63 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8, which has been reached with 63 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
