As this was our first visit and Mum has only been with you for a couple of weeks we feel we cannot give a full review. However, we were made welcome and impressed with the building, location and the staff were friendly. Mum seemed happy.

It is difficult to consider value for money when the cost of care is extraordinary for the average person to afford, but one must consider that residential care is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every week. I don't think there is anything else in life that represents such a low hourly charge for something
so valuable. I believe the Ashton House staff take good care of my mother and by association have given me continued peace from the difficulty of holding down a full-time job whilst being a carer. My ma has dementia and I feel her needs are met with dignity and kindness. My perception is that she is doing as well as possible with the condition she has. I had preconceptions and concerns about immaterial things when I first needed to look at dementia care homes for my ma. Any concerns I had left me very quickly once I had confidence that Ashton House delivers on the things that really matter about residential care, kindness and a good level of professionalism.

My mother was admitted to Ashton House for palliative care. For the week she was there, passing away on 17th October, she was treated with respect, kindness and empathy by all staff. My mother's family was also treated very kindly at all times. I was very happy for my mother to be at Ashton House as
I knew she was well looked after.

Do not send your loved one here, the standard of care is not good enough. We visited daily, so had a good insight as to how this place is run. Thankfully, we managed to move my dad before he passed away, we'll always be grateful for that. We have reported our concerns.
Reply from Gaj Ragunathan, Director at Ashton House Nursing & Residential HomeThank you for giving us the opportunity to see you in person to go through the concerns. Further to going through all the care records, having spoken to the hospice nurse who visits us weekly and the care home matron, nurses did follow the protocols in place and advice provided by the MDT. But didn't communicate proactively with the family, keeping the family informed with the clinical reason for each and every step they have taken surrounding your father's care.

My husband has been a resident at Ashton House since October 2019 and has been treated with nothing but kindness, dignity and respect. Even through the Covid experience, the staff and management did their utmost to let us have contact with our loved ones. Now, that all the restrictions are gone, the
care of both residents and their families is truly amazing. The residents are very well cared for, and the activities provided are outstanding. Thank you, everyone.

My dad spent 7 months in the Hazelwood Dementia Unit, until he passed away in July 2024.
We originally looked at Ashton for my dad back in February 2023. The registered manager was so helpful and informative at a time when we had the daunting task of trying to work out the best care for my dad. At
that stage, my dad's health took a bad turn so he remained under NHS care. But in November 2023, when circumstances changed again, I knew without looking anywhere else that Ashton House was the most appropriate place for my dad.
For the 7 months my dad was at the home, he was wonderfully cared for by the carers and nurses. The staff were compassionate, caring, diligent and friendly. All the staff whenever I visited had a welcome smile. I would visit on a weekly basis and my mum would go in daily; we were both welcomed and, for my mum in particular, the staff were so supportive. I am so grateful to Ashton House for caring for my dad.

What a deceptive, neglectful place. Not able to communicate as staff don't care. Pretend to be attentive but leave patients for hours. Not interested in helping, food is appalling. Requests for more palatable food were ignored. Not allowed liquid paracetamol so crushed bitter tablets in water and made
to take instead. Disgusted by the aggressive attitude of nursing staff, fight you on every issue raised. No attempt to give alternative food if complain. Lift "brakes down". The manager is aggressive, backs her staff against you. No in-between fresh drinks or snacks. Not allowed to get drinks yourself and no staff around to get them for you. Constant beeping noise, tells you it can't be turned down, beeps very loudly night and day. Don't care if disturbing patients. Attitude arrogant and challenging.
TV not working as not tuned in and won't work. I could go on and on. This place needs closing down and new management and employ non-biased staff. Do not subject your relative to this vile and deceptive home.
Reply from Gaj Ragunathan, Director at Ashton House Nursing & Residential HomeAt Ashton House, one of our specialisations is palliative care and we work very closely with our local hospice team to support residents being admitted to Ashton House from the community.
The resident was living on his own and his daughter was visiting day and night, sadly was on 'palliative care' and placement was done through CCG as his needs weren't being met at home. From the day of the admission, the daughter did not want the father to be moved to a nursing home. At the nursing home, we have protocols in place in line with NICE guidelines which must be followed, hence we can't always please the family. As part of the process, we completed a Mental Capacity Assessment and had a care home matron (from GP surgery) along with other MDTs (Multi Disciplinary Team) like SALT, TVN and the daughter. The daughter requested for a physio, dietitian and vascular referral, which the GP declined as the resident was actively dying. The social worker spoke to the daughter explaining the resident required professional nurses' attention.

1. Food is appalling. Requests for more palatable food were ignored – from the time of admission, the resident was only taking sips of fluid. SALT recommended a minced and moist diet but the daughter was not in agreement with the recommendation.
3. Not allowed liquid paracetamol so crushed bitter tablets in water and made to take instead – Resident was admitted with prescribed medication including Paracetamol effervescent. This is a soluble tablet and not a crushed tablet. All the medications were administered by nurses ONLY and in line with the protocol. No concerns were raised by the GP.
4. No attempt to give alternative food if you complain – The staff provided food as recommended by the SALT team. We are unable to facilitate the family wishes against professional recommendation.
5. Lift "breaks down"- We have 3 lifts working in our home, this year we had no concerns in regards to the lifts. The lifts are maintained quarterly by the lift provider. During the engineer's servicing visit ONLY lifts cannot be used.
6. No in-between fresh drinks or snacks. Not allowed to get drinks yourself and no staff around to get them for you - We have mid-morning tea served with milkshakes, fresh fruit baskets and biscuits. We also have mid-afternoon tea served with fresh fruit baskets and homemade cakes (sweet bites). We have drinks available in each room and the lounges. Teas and coffees are provided between the usual offering times.
7. Constant beeping noise, tells you it can't be turned down, beeps very loudly night and day – The daughter informed the nurse that the call bell noise is annoying, the nurse explained that we cannot turn it off as there are vulnerable residents in the room who will need help and they are calling for assistance.
8. TV not working as not tuned in and won't work - This issue has never been raised to any staff.

My mother was in the home for palliative care for 12 weeks before she passed. All of the staff at the home were friendly, compassionate, conscientious, caring and diligent for her and were equally amazing for the family too. We cannot thank the staff enough for everything that they did.
We would rate
the care provided as "outstanding."

All staff members and care assistants, domestics, team leaders, etc are all equally friendly, efficient and caring. The manager is highly principled in very
good standards of care and this is followed down to all staff members providing an excellent service!

My mum has been at Ashton House since September 2023. During her time there, and my visits to her, we have been treated with respect, kindness and dignity by all the team, who are always smiling and there is always a cheerful atmosphere. They really look after my mum, and despite her communication difficulties,
are very attentive and try to engage with her. She smiles a lot with them, so that is testament in itself and makes me happy knowing she is safe and happy. I am always made to feel very welcome when I visit. Thank you for looking after her so well.

My mother-in-law went to Ashton House last spring, and sadly she passed away on 6/1/24. All the staff at Ashton House were amazing. They really do care about their residents. All the staff are kind, patient, polite, respectful and loving. When I was first greeted by the manager, I knew immediately this
was the right place for her. The reception staff are great ambassadors for the house. Always smiling, discreet, kind and friendly.
Ashton House was always putting on events and encouraging its residents to join in.
I highly recommend this care home.

My father-in-law passed away here two days ago, after two months of end-of-life care. The home and staff were attentive and caring throughout. The home is clean, warm, and safe. It’s in a pleasant location adjoining a lovely park. A choice of food was always given, and special requests were granted.
I’d highly recommend this home, and wouldn’t hesitate to use it again. They let us stay overnight twice, to be with him in his final hours. Thank you to everyone at Ashton House.

I am grateful for all that Ashton House was able to provide for my father-in-law in the last months of his life. They rescued us from a tricky situation where he had been evicted from a much glossier retirement home. Ashton House demonstrated clearly that the most important aspect of care is quality
caregiving rather than interior design. The patience, kindness and professionalism of all the staff, shown to both us and him, was much appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Ashton House.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.621)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.621) out of 10 for Ashton House Nursing & Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.621 for Ashton House Nursing & Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (302 Excellents x 5) + (65 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (16 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 391 Ratings = 4.621
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ashton House Nursing & Residential Home is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 100 registered maximum number of service users is 20, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
