My review is general, over a period of several months, when I have visited my friend every week. The staff are always friendly and usually willing to engage in sorting out problems. However, there are consistent problems which indicate a less than satisfactory care environment. For example, when my
friend tells me he wants to go to the toilet the call button is not answered on many occasions, even when I have gone to the nurse's station to ask for assistance. The care staff are very nice but just walk into my friend's room without knocking. Maintenance takes a long time to be actioned for example repairing a failed door closure and fixing a picture on the wall.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Darlington CourtThank you for your review of our service at Darlington Court. We are pleased to hear that you find the staff friendly and willing to help. However, we are sorry and disappointed to hear that you have concerns around the care environment. We've investigated your concerns regarding maintenance and the faulty door. We can confirm that we did explain to a family member at the time that we were waiting for a part, as soon as the part became available the door was fixed. With regard to the picture, this was moved the day after the request was received. We completely understand the need for privacy and we have fed back to the team, reminding them of the importance of knocking before entering residents' rooms. Thanks again for your feedback. If you have any further concerns in future we'd very much like to meet with you in person and run through them thoroughly with you.

My father-in-law has been at Darlington Court for six months. We have been very happy with the care and support given to him during his time there. He joined in all of the activities and the staff support has been invaluable. He has now left to join his wife in her care home and hopefully will be as
happy. Many thanks to all of the staff at Darlington Court.

Amazing staff, can not praise them enough.
They were so helpful when I was moving my dad to Darlington Court. As a result, my dad settled in really well and has made a real improvement since he has been there.

Mum needed respite care and rehab after a bad bout of shingles which led to her being hospitalised. I and my brother are delighted with the friendly, professional, caring environment and staff who, without exception, handle Mum and other residents with care, patience and dignity in a safe environment.
The food is well prepared and creative for small appetites. Mum is settling in, making friends and engaging with the activities. We are very grateful to all concerned.

The choice of nursing home for a loved one is never easy but the staff at Darlington Court made Mum's transition very easy.
The level of care is very good and the facilities are excellent, the staff are particularly kind and helpful, nothing seems too much trouble.
Mum has never complained about
anything.
We recommend Darlington Court without hesitation.

Since my mother has been at Darlington Court she has received excellent care. The place has a lovely feel and Mum has been warmly accepted as one of the Darlington Court family. We couldn’t have wished for a better place, and Mum is being well looked after by the whole team. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone at Darlington Court for their continued hard work in helping my mum to feel more settled.
Thank you so much!

The staff team at the care home have been most helpful and caring, not only to my mother who is the resident but to the whole of our family when visiting. We have been made to feel comfortable and welcome, a member of staff is always on hand to talk to. They communicate well and understand this is a
new experience for the whole family reassuring us and keeping us updated.
The care home itself is always clean, light and airy creating a welcoming atmosphere.

We have to go away quite frequently and feel very comfortable leaving Mum in the hands of the staff at Darlington Court. She is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's but is still treated with dignity and compassion by the nurses and carers. They have tried to include her in various activities but she
becomes too distressed when leaving her room, so they have found alternative methods of stimulation and engagement. The recent Covid outbreak was handled professionally and with minimum disruption.
All the staff are friendly and approachable and have generally been able to answer any questions. The admission and financial policies were clearly explained and any issues were dealt with by the appropriate staff quickly.
Mum is usually clean and tidy when we visit and she feels safe in her room. We are full of admiration for the care workers at the home, who are doing a very difficult and vital job!

My mother is being very well looked after at Darlington Court. The staff do a good job and some of them go above and beyond to provide excellent care and support. Mum seems to be more and more settled in her new home as each month passes. We appreciate the various lounges and communal rooms where you
can spend time with your loved one in a pleasant, clean setting while having tea and coffee or even lunch together.

My dad moved into Darlington Court in May last year and I’m very happy with his care. The staff are lovely, they know him and are kind and considerate and helpful. He has a nice room which he’s happy with and he makes good use of the communal spaces as well. There is a daily schedule of activities and
I’m grateful that he gets considerably more stimulation and social interaction than before he moved in. I don’t live locally so it’s very reassuring to know he is well cared for. The home also uses an app to log activities he’s taken part in and they regularly post photos on their social media page so I can see what he’s been doing despite not being local to him. They also keep me informed of his health and any issues he has and do so promptly.

My friend was admitted to Darlington Court approximately a year ago. She was in quite a bad way, but having seen her over the last year, she has not only improved with her health but in her mental spirit as well. She can be quite difficult and stubborn, but the staff/carers treat her with respect and
dignity. The staff from reception and up are always welcoming and fun to meet. If I had a relative needing care, I would certainly recommend Darlington Court.

Our mum is very happy at Darlington Court. She came to Darlington Court after being at two other homes that did not meet her needs and had become distressed about being in an unfamiliar setting. My sister and I had also become very worried and upset about the whole situation. As soon as we got to Darlington
we were completely reassured and although Mum's dementia has progressed a lot, she has had the best treatment possible and we are very happy with her and every aspect of her care.

My father was in hospital and had become increasingly frail so his old care home did not feel they could take him back. We had to quickly find somewhere to take Dad that could provide dementia and nursing care. The staff at Darlington Court were extremely helpful and understanding and we organised his
discharge to the home in a matter of days. Unfortunately, due to Covid, he needed to isolate when he arrived so we were not able to visit however the staff soon realised he was on 'end of life' care and enabled both my sister and I to visit around our holidays. We were both there together when we were called to say that he was nearing the end of his days which was so important to us. Sadly Dad was only at Darlington Court for nine days so we were not able to give a review in more depth. However, what we saw was that the care he had seemed good and the staff were all kind to both Dad and us at a difficult time.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.727)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.727) out of 10 for Darlington Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.727 for Darlington Court is calculated as follows: ( (198 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 249 Ratings = 4.727
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Darlington Court is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 56 registered maximum number of service users is 11.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

As Home Manager, the most important part of my role is making sure residents receive safe, compassionate, high-quality care in a home where they feel comfortable, respected and valued.

Before joining the team at Darlington Court, I was a home manager for another large organisation. While there, I was able to help achieve a number of positive outcomes, including improving standards and developing a strong team. Joining Care UK felt like the right next step for me, as it is an established home with a strong team that genuinely makes a positive difference to residents and their families.

I believe that a good home manager should be approachable, resilient, organised and genuinely caring. I think you also need to be a good listener and to remember that residents are at the heart of everything we do.

I’m really proud of what we all do here, and it is always rewarding to see residents well cared for and happy, and to see colleagues work well together. Knowing that we have such a beneficial impact on people’s daily lives is something I value greatly, so when I was recognised as a Queen’s Nurse for my contribution to care, it meant so much to me.

For me, the best part of the day is spending time speaking with residents, their relatives and colleagues. I enjoy being visible and involved because it helps me understand what’s going on and learn what support people need so we can keep on improving.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and travelling. I also value personal development and learning new things that help me grow both personally and professionally.
