Our mum received very good care at Darlington Court for almost two years. The care team are kind and attentive and create a safe world for those, like Mum, who are living with the confusions of dementia. Carers were patient and looked after residents with good humour. The food always looked really appetising
and everywhere always looked clean and cared for. Pre-Covid there was a range of activities for residents both provided by the carers and outside entertainers. We only moved Mum so she could be with her sister who had sadly had a stroke. We are grateful to all at Darlington Court for taking care of Mum all through Covid, at a time when we could hardly see her, it was a comfort to know she was in good hands.

My mother received nursing care for three months while staying at Darlington Court Care Home. Aged 96 years, my mother had become extremely frail physically and she had become mentally damaged following suffering from a stroke in January 2021.
My mother was very happy with her time spent at Darlington
Court.
I found all the staff very helpful, giving professional care and extremely open to questions.

From being withdrawn and hardly talking a few months ago, Mum is now very responsive, chatty and happy due to the care and encouragement of all the staff.
She is eating far better and is appreciating all that the different staff members do for her, from making sure she is happy with the menu (different
allergies) to carefully brushing her hair. It's the little things that have made such a difference to her.
She often tells me, that nurse is lovely she does x, y, z.
It has been so hard on both residents and relatives this last year, but everyone here has tried to make things easier by video calls and, when allowed, visits.
Nothing seems like too much trouble, I am so pleased Mum is cared for here.
I would highly recommend it.

The last time I saw Mum was the day she arrived at Darlington Court, nearly four weeks ago. At that point she’d just spent three weeks in hospital and because of the effects of Alzheimer's disease, she was understandably confused and bewildered following the move to Darlington Court.
When we visited,
my wife and I could not believe how much Mum had improved in those four weeks; “transformed” as my wife put it!
She has clearly settled in very well and during our 30-minute visit was happy and relaxed, with no sign of the aggression we have witnessed at home in recent months.
Mum commented on how friendly everybody is – staff and residents alike – and this was apparent to us also. There was a lovely, happy atmosphere.
Mum is willingly joining in with the activities and is enjoying her food. Her hair also looked lovely.
We are grateful to all the team at Darlington Court for the wonderful care they are giving mum and for making such a difference to her quality of life.

Due to current restrictions, it is impossible to answer all questions. My friend's solicitor has Power of Attorney. However, she and I speak at least 3 times a day on the telephone. Life is not easy and we both have many problems. I know from what she tells me and from the attitude of the staff that
I speak to that she is well cared for. I have visited 3 times recently and the routine has been most efficient and the weather kind! She is (in my opinion) a fussy eater but she often tells me she has enjoyed a meal. This morning she is waiting for her hair to be washed and earlier in the week the podiatrist attended. She was very pleased with the result. I have no idea how much all this is costing her. Thank you all for being there during these difficult times.

Heartfelt thanks to the team at Darlington Court who always provide exemplary care for the residents. Special thanks to the carer who supports my mum with Skype and my first visit after 17-lockdown weeks - she shows genuine affection and care for my mum and always relays what I say accurately and with
good humour as Mum doesn't always hear me. Thank you!

Mother has been a resident now for nearly a year. The immediate change in her on settling in was astonishing, despite her resistance to move there, she ate better, was free from fear, isolation, no more risk of locking herself in or out. She enjoys being waited on, having her feet and hands attended
to, getting her hair done all in walking distance of her lovely big room, in which she has some of her own furniture, pictures on the wall and photographs and books. She gets her newspaper delivered every Sunday. Darlington staff are great, always welcoming, never too busy to assist, keep us informed, answer emails promptly and even enabled Mother to have a buffet lunch for a group she belonged to so they could award her a long service medal.
The building is clean and fresh, plenty of privacy and completely secure in an unobtrusive way. I am so relieved that she is safe, cared for and has company. The staff respect her wishes where possible.

I feel I'm not satisfied with my husband's care. I feel there is not enough encouragement given to his personal care. I have felt unwelcomed when sitting with my husband in the evening. I felt that I was in the way.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Darlington CourtThank you for taking the time to submit your feedback. We work hard at Darlington Court not only to make sure residents are given the best of care but also that the home is always warm and welcoming for any visitors, especially family members. I understand that the home manager has some time to speak with you directly about your worries and I am sure she will be able to allay your concerns and make sure you always feel comfortable in future, but of course please always feel free to speak to the home manager or a member of the senior care team at any time if there’s anything we can do to help.

Staff are caring, professional, compassionate and supportive in all they do. Activities for residents are wonderful, they have something happening nearly every day and we are encouraged to join in. The manager takes time to discuss issues and answers our questions.
Mum's room is always clean and tidy
and this is reflected in all other areas we use when outside in the garden. Staff constantly monitor residents to ensure they are comfortable, shaded from strong sun and provided with frequent fluids to drink.
Mum has been a resident for seven years and is very happy and appreciates all they do to help and care for her.

My mother moved into Darlington Court in August 2018. It is the best move Mum could have made. The care and attention to detail are second to none and the activities are suitable for all residents. I never have to worry about Mum because I trust the team 100%. I was disappointed to read the recent CQC
report. The inspectors are only in the home a number of hours and make their report based on a short visit, whereas I spend several hours every week in the home and would give the home an outstanding result.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.727)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.727) out of 10 for Darlington Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.727 for Darlington Court is calculated as follows: ( (198 Excellents x 5) + (40 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 249 Ratings = 4.727
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Darlington Court is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 56 registered maximum number of service users is 11.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

As Home Manager, the most important part of my role is making sure residents receive safe, compassionate, high-quality care in a home where they feel comfortable, respected and valued.

Before joining the team at Darlington Court, I was a home manager for another large organisation. While there, I was able to help achieve a number of positive outcomes, including improving standards and developing a strong team. Joining Care UK felt like the right next step for me, as it is an established home with a strong team that genuinely makes a positive difference to residents and their families.

I believe that a good home manager should be approachable, resilient, organised and genuinely caring. I think you also need to be a good listener and to remember that residents are at the heart of everything we do.

I’m really proud of what we all do here, and it is always rewarding to see residents well cared for and happy, and to see colleagues work well together. Knowing that we have such a beneficial impact on people’s daily lives is something I value greatly, so when I was recognised as a Queen’s Nurse for my contribution to care, it meant so much to me.

For me, the best part of the day is spending time speaking with residents, their relatives and colleagues. I enjoy being visible and involved because it helps me understand what’s going on and learn what support people need so we can keep on improving.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and travelling. I also value personal development and learning new things that help me grow both personally and professionally.
