Overview

The Review Score of 9.5 (maximum of 10) for St Georges Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 16 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Georges Court in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.487 for St Georges Court is calculated as follows: ( (102 Excellents x 5) + (77 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.487

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.987 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Georges Court is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 15.2 positive Reviews (76 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 15 Reviews ÷ 15.2 Target = 0.987

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.5 St Georges Court has a Review Score of 9.5 (9.474) from 16 Reviews

My mother requires full nursing care with particular care to skin and pressure areas. She always looks well cared for and comfortable. The staff are kind and gentle with her.

Our Mother was a resident for just over four years and was very happy at St Georges Court, the staff were always friendly and caring. Mum enjoyed the lively entertainment that was arranged by the home and also the outings. Mum celebrated her 100th birthday, and management and staff all wished her well with a party and lovely cake made by the chef. Mum was treated with kindness and respect in the last days of her life and that was extended to us as a family.

My family and I were very satisfied with the care provided to my mother who was in the dementia unit at St Georges Court for over 6 years. The excellent manager has been able to put together a superb team of carers who always carry out their work in a friendly and cheery way.

The home employs a full-time entertainments co-ordinator, who puts together a varied range of activities. The activities range from craft and reminiscence activities, gardening in the home's nice grounds to visits by singers/musicians and small animal educational specialists.

A lot of money has been spent by the home's owners in recent years in upgrading, modernising and decorating the home. The result being that the home is always bright and fresh.

The food is excellent, on occasions I ate with my mother and the quality of the food was always superb.

The home was recommended to us and I would recommend the home to others.

My mother was a resident at St George's for 4 years. She wasn't the easiest personality and suffered from dementia and OCD. My father was a top medic so my mother trusted no one and makes the job of caring for her very challenging indeed. Despite needing help being blind and disabled, she remained fiercely independent making the job of caring for her impossible. I'm full of admiration for the patience, care and support everyone gave her. They respected her wishes at all times.
It was down to her chief carer that my mother settled in when all she wanted was to return to Australia and look after herself. Over the time she was there, the management varied being excellent when she arrived and excellent when she died. Not only was the home run efficiently but the support I was given when things were distressing and difficult went beyond the call of duty. I will be forever grateful for making the last years of my mother's life as good as it could be. Thank you to everyone!

Sarah Nelson, Manager at St Georges Court responded to this review on 20 Apr 2018:

Thank you for your positive review - I will pass your comments onto the team and I am sure they will be very gratefully received. We have very fond memories of your Mum.

My father has been resident at St Georges for four years following a stroke which has resulted in him having nursing needs. Whilst you may not choose to place a parent into a care home we felt this was the best way to support him as we were unable to give him the appropriate care in a home setting and it provided an excellent location near the station and bus routes for regular family visits. We have been very happy with our decision during this time. Dad has a lovely room with en-suite and is made to feel part of the St Georges 'family'. Like any care home, there is staff turnover which can be unsettling but the staff with short and long service demonstrate a caring and welcoming approach to both Dad and the family. They are also sensitive to Dad's needs which is very important to us for his welfare and dignity.
A range of activities are provided each week to encourage resident interaction and participation and there is a lovely garden to relax in during the warm weather.

Sarah Nelson, Manager at St Georges Court responded to this review on 19 Apr 2018:

Thank you for this very positive review.
I am happy to say we now have a fully recruited team who are bonding together and creating good person centred relationships with the people living here at St Georges Court, which contributes to the effectiveness of the service.

My brother entered the care home after being diagnosed with dementia. At that time he had suffered a major loss of memory that had left him seriously confused, lacking confidence, frightened with an extremely low self-esteem. Since his stay, his confidence and demeanour has improved and he is happy and well cared for.
This was clear to me the first time I took him to a dental appointment. On returning to Russel Street he said "its St George's Court" in such a bright and cheerful manner that I knew he was happy that I had taken him "back home".
The management was also very helpful to me whilst I was trying to sort out my brother's financial affairs and never once hassled me regarding the situation which is more than I can say for another organisation.
The manager has also been extremely kind, professional and knowledgeable regarding the assistance she gave me whilst successfully applying for his attendance allowance mirroring what I see from all staff from reception to his floor.

Recommendations from three friends meant we had St George's in mind when my wife was found to be in need of dementia care. First impressions were good, residential care was offered and accepted and we have had absolutely no reason to change our minds. St George's Court, Cambridge, would almost certainly be rated as among the top 10 care homes in the UK.

On the death of our son, I found the staff who were looking after my ex-husband, gave him extra attention and time when he had his melt-downs and talked to him about our son. I found this helped him.
Also, management and staff even found time to see if I was OK. These small things to them made a big difference to my ex-husband and myself.
Thanks to all.

My experience after living here a few years is very positive in that I am fairly happy and still enjoy and wish to continue to enjoy life.
If there are difficulties, the staff are generally quick to sort things out if that is possible or do whatever they can to alleviate the problem. They can work no more miracles than I can but the relaxed, pleasant atmosphere is prevalent and helps a lot.

The environment is excellent. The food is suitable and well cooked. The managers are very competent and committed and many of the junior staff are equally good. The only weakness is the poor English (especially the pronunciation) of many (or most) of the foreign staff. There have been occasions when residents have fallen over in temporarily unsupervised public rooms.

My mother had a hard time settling into her new home, but the staff have made this move a lot easier. She loves every one of the staff members who always have a smile and good word to say to her. The atmosphere is always pleasant and as a visitor am always made to feel welcome. As a family, we are aware that she misses her home. This is the closest that we could find to home.

The staff of this care home quite simply care a lot about the residents - showing a huge amount of patience and understanding during some very testing times. The longer you get to know the staff the more you can understand the stress that they are under - long shifts which are very tiring especially.

Each and every member of staff, from the Manager to the domestic staff are always happy to see you - they make time to make you feel welcome like you are actually in the home of the individual (in my case my mum) you are visiting.

There is no doubt that in my mind that they are short staffed and the home will always need more maintenance than the staff and probably their budget can manage.

That said, they have given my mum a far better quality of life than I could possibly have done - she has had her moments of being difficult but you wouldn't know it from the reaction of the staff.

Quite simply, I believe they are really special.

Sarah Nelson, Registered Manager at St Georges Court responded to this review on 07 Mar 2018:

Thank you very much for this positive review.
We are happy to say we have recruited a huge amount of staff who have successfully commenced their employment at St Georges Court and have made a big difference to the lives of the people living here.

One of the nice things about St Georges Court in Cambridge is that the resident can have his or her own furniture and pictures in their room so there can be at least a small link with their former home. He or she can also eat in their room if they wish. On the other hand, residents are encouraged to enjoy the very varied choice of activities. These range from films, exercises, art, pottery, quizzes and games. It is certainly an advantage that the home is big enough to support a dedicated activities manager.

Finding local places to go out to is quite easy because a high street which has lots of eating places and shops is just at the end of the road. There is also the beautiful Botanic Gardens close enough to walk to (or wheelchair to). The gardens make a green and restful place to visit and even have warm greenhouses to retreat to on a cold day.
