Kirkley Manor Nursing Home is a nursing home by the sea, registered with the Care Quality Commission to treat complex care needs, which only qualified Nurses are allowed to provide. They employ their own team of fully trained and qualified nurses and carers, and never use agency staff. You can rest assured that they will meet your relative’s needs, whether it be a serious illness, physical disability, dementia, nursing care, or caring for them in the last stages of their life.

The home also has a full activities program delivered by dedicated trained staff and aims to have something for everyone. Whatever their level of ability, residents are supported to keep active in body and mind through enjoyable and stimulating beneficial pastimes, either individually or with others.

They are developing person-centred care practice. This means they focus on the person, not only their need. They listen and get to know each person's strengths, qualities, likes, dislikes, and their sense of humour, and as they and family members help them to understand their life story, you can be confident they will be supported to exercise as much choice and control over their life as possible.

They believe everyone is a unique individual, with unique talents, and that everyone deserves the same opportunity to live life to the full, so they don’t treat people differently based on their condition, especially dementia. You can be assured that your loved one will not be excluded, but rather supported to integrate and be involved with others in the life of the home.

They know that food and meals are important, so they employ fully trained in-house chefs who use fresh ingredients to produce a varied menu of home-cooked classic dishes, and from different cuisines, cooked and presented to meet individual dietary and nutritional needs.
You can relax knowing that your family member will safely enjoy tasty, attractive and nutritious meals.

My friend of over 70 years (he is now 88, and our grannies lived next door to each other) came into Kirkely Manor in a poor state mentally, emotionally and physically. Over the two years he has been there, he has regained his health and much of his memory and mental well-being. This has to be because
of the careful nursing back to health, but mostly, I believe to the individual care and friendship he has received from the staff. Bless you all!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback, so lovely to hear that your beloved one is in our good hands. That's why we are here.

I have visited Kirkley Manor on several occasions. My ex-husband is a patient in the home and I am much impressed by the care and kindness of the staff. The constant attention given makes them feel loved and wanted, and prevents them from feeling lonely.
The covid precautions are perfect for visitors
and patients, so a big thank you to you all.

Generally, Kirkley is ok. Mostly the staff are amazing but under so much pressure due to lack of colleagues. The food and cleanliness are satisfactory. The Kingswood staff, nurses and receptionist give 110% and look after mum well. More staff needed and they desperately need some new wheelchairs.
Reply from Sue McBroom, Home Manager at Kirkley Manor Nursing HomeThank you for your valued feedback, our staff do an amazing job. We now have some new wheelchairs to be utilised by families. We are always looking at staffing. We use a dependency tool that currently shows we are staffed appropriately and we are sorry your perception is different.

My dad has lost part of his leg due to amputation. He is quite set in his ways and he can be quite stubborn at times. The staff are now used to my dad and they always manage to look after him and his needs, always with a smile on their faces. They are so compassionate and kind - nothing is too much
trouble for them. A massive thank you to you all, as I know what pressure you are under.

My husband spent the last four months of his life at Kirkley. The staff gave him the best care, they were incredibly kind and considerate towards him, and us, his family. Nothing was too much trouble and most of all, the staff gave him time, to chat, to sort out his phone, his beard trimmer and TV.
At the end of his life this week, the staff were impressive, allowing my husband dignity in death and showing us understanding and compassion. We can't thank all the staff enough for his end of life care: he was content and it showed. A huge thank you.

Mum came in for end of life after a major stroke, unable to do anything. She is not eating solids, doing activities, feeding herself and is happy. Staff are friendly, attentive to Mum's needs, provide numerous activities and stimulation. She has thrived in the home and I am very pleased with all aspects.

Friend of a resident for four years. As her daughter and brother only visit her on rare occasions so as she was transferred for respite purposes in December and is now going to become a resident, will continue as a friend to do so and am very happy with the standard of care your staff provide.

My dad has been in Kirkley Manor since August 2019. Everyone cares for my father very well. The lady at front reception is so very helpful. The main problem is the food is not very good at all. We do not have to worry about my dad at all.

Kirkley Manor does not have kerb appeal but it's what happens inside that's important. All the staff make you feel welcome and are willing to find the right person to speak to you if you have a problem they can't help you with. As well as care needs, carers make time to talk to all the residents as
individuals and know their interests. Nursing staff are available if you need to talk to them, as is the management. Activities have a new programme. To keep families and residents up to date about what is happening, regular meetings are held with the manager.

Mum is now bedridden and not involved in activities so I not able to comment. The staff are caring and considerate and the cleanliness has improved during the last twelve months. Whilst it is understandable, Mum's personal hygiene standard seems to have dropped since she has become bedridden.

I am delighted at the way my mum's life has changed most of all. She looks much better and she seems calmer and if it's possible, happier. Thanks to all the staff who have made this happen - she is not just left in her room. She looks very comfortable in the lovely, comfortable chair that has been put
in her room.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.874)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.874) out of 10 for Kirkley Manor Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.874 for Kirkley Manor Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (266 Excellents x 5) + (34 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 302 Ratings = 4.874
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kirkley Manor Nursing Home is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 71 registered maximum number of service users is 14.2, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
