I am POA to my sister. She is 83 years old and diagnosed to have dementia. She was a self-funding resident until 12 march 2020. I and other family members could not praise them in any way. Her personal care was non-evident, the room was filthy and smelled. The care staff were badly supervised and the
management refused to admit to any negligence.
Her toenails were extremely long and because of this particular lack of care and she found it difficult to walk. She had a bloodied wound on her shin bone that had not been attended to or covered. She claimed that she hated the staff and the home and wanted to be moved.
I moved her from the home in order to safeguard her. She now resides at elsewhere in Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire. And she is now a changed better person and smells lovely again.

On the whole I am satisfied with the care and attention that is given to my mum. Obviously it was a very difficult decision to move Mum from home to Avocet Court but the staff at Harleigh House have been brilliant in helping both Mum and the rest of the family to adjust and have always gone out of their
way to make things easier.

My Mother was placed in Avocet Care Home after an accident resulting in a broken wrist, she had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's making it a particularly difficult time for the whole family. From the moment we walked in trough Powys door, they have been absolutely fantastic, nothing is too much
trouble and the care and attention the 'Duchess' has received has been second to none. She loves being there and has been entertained and well-fed every day. Great place, great staff and great atmosphere, thoroughly recommended.

My mother aged 101 years was fiercely independent, lived alone without help until a stroke in Jan 2020. Following a period in hospital, she became a resident in Avocet Care Home, Ipswich. Albeit her body was failing, her brain remained as sharp as ever, an avid reader who would always challenge and
question, always providing a considered opinion on matters. From day one she accepted Avocet as her home. She was so praiseworthy of all aspects of her care, it is also fair to say she gained a second wind, enjoying the many activities arranged, high teas, birthday parties, Valentine functions, outside entertainers and games, all to create interaction for the residents. During my many visits over 3/4 weeks, I witnessed not just good care for my mother but also to other residents. I had been employed in quality control and praise the home and staff for their professionalism, a great team. As family members visiting we were always made to feel welcome, families would also have the opportunity to dine in. The reassurance of such a good home provides such a peace of mind. Thank you all at Avocet.

From November, my mum has been a resident at Avocet Court. Although my mum and us a family were nervous due to the unknown and new experience. However, we have found that there was no reason for any concerns. I feel as though the staffing levels should be more at certain periods.
Reply from Rebecca Watkins, General Manager at Avocet Court Care HomeThank you for your review and we are delighted to hear that Mum has settled. Our staffing levels are very generous though this may not appear to be the case at times when staff are delivering care behind closed doors.

We have found the care very good. The regular staff are always kind, cheerful and loving towards my father. This means a lot to us. We would like to see more regular staff - it is apparent that agency staff have to be used. It is very disappointing when long term staff leave after being told they have
to move from Harleck House.
It's noted that there are more activities which my father really enjoys.
All this helps to make this difficult journey so much easier.
A big heartfelt thank you.

Avocet Care Home is one of the best care homes in Ipswich. The care my relative received was second to none. Not only that the staff care was exceptional. I found the management extremely approachable and had an open door policy. No matter how busy the staff and management are they always make time
for us.
We were very anxious about our relative having to go into a home not to mention the guilt we felt about having to take such a decision. However the management and staff alleviated all our concerns and Avocet is a home from home.
My relative loves residing there and we have peace of mind knowing that not only are their nursing needs being met but also their emotional and environmental needs.
I can honestly say I would have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone. It is the best care home for miles.

I just want to thank the staff on Cilgerran for everything they've done for my late husband. My husband was a resident at Avocet Court for a number of years before we had to make the very hard decision to relocate to be nearer our family. I relocated first and my husband stayed at Avocet until I found
a suitable place for him to move to. During this hard time, the staff ensured my husband was taken care of and they kept me informed of everything as they knew how hard it was for us both being apart and this made it a little more easy to be apart from each other. I wish all the girls (as my husband would call them) all the best for the future.

My husband was admitted to Powys for palliative care. Unfortunately, he deteriorated very quickly. The staff ensured he was comfortable and pain-free at all times. They provided exceptional care for him in his last few days which brings great comfort to me. I also want to thank the staff as they not
only cared for my husband but they supported me every step of the way. I can’t thank Avocet enough for giving my husband a good death.

Worried at first about leaving him but after just a few days it's perfect, 100%.
Staff are so kind and someone there all the time, they just have to ask for anything and somebody gets it for him. I cannot fault anything or anybody.
I cannot praise this care home enough.

My dad was admitted to Harlech in April 2019 after a difficult decision. Since then the care and kindness that all of the staff have shown to my dad and all of our family has been overwhelming. My mother spent the last three months of her life at this Athena care home and she was treated with dignity and respect by the staff, the palliative care she received was exceptional. The staff are very caring and professional. She was always comfortable and pain-free, especially during her final days.
The staff were always very kind towards me and my family and ready to explain any procedures that they would be doing for her. Her room was always fresh and clean. She didn't have a big appetite and her food was nourishing to make her eat as well.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.735)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.735) out of 10 for Avocet Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 61 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 60 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.735 for Avocet Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (547 Excellents x 5) + (141 Goods x 4) + (24 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 712 Ratings = 4.735
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Avocet Court Care Home is based on 60 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 153 registered maximum number of service users is 30.6, which has been reached with 60 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
