My father has Dementia and was diagnosed during Covid. I supported Dad with independent living for as long as I could, but I wish I had found them earlier. The Check House is a wonderful environment for my father and one where I find myself humbled by the level of support and care they provide for him.
Activities are always on offer, so he has an opportunity for quiet times or mixed community times.
As the sole carer for Dad, I can't recomend them highly enough. The whole team led by the manager are brilliant at what they do. There is no better place for Dad locally.

My mother has been living at The Check House for more than ten years. From the outset, the staff have been wonderfully kind and caring. They're professional but friendly. Care for my mum has made The Check House a real home for her and has also been deeply reassuring to me and the rest of the family.
I can only recommend The Check House very highly. The accommodation and support they offer is really wonderful and greatly appreciated.

I cannot praise or recommend The Check House highly enough! My mother was a resident for a year until she passed away and both the staff and level of care were second to none. I live in the USA and nothing was too much trouble to keep me in contact with Mum, by either phone or video call and updated
me whenever necessary. I always felt it was like an extended family, with the professional excellence added.

Check House has cared for my parents since 2019. The staff are extremely caring and the residents are lucky to have engaging activities, gorgeous food and trips out. I have always been kept fully informed of their progress. After losing my dad, my mum was comforted and helped to understand what had
happened.
They felt they were on holiday whilst there!
Now after my mym has passed, everyone has been very thoughtful and sympathetic.
I believe the care they received here has enabled them to live their best end of life.

My mother was cared for at The Check House for about three years. She had dementia and was always treated with kindness by the staff. The food was amazingly good and at times my mother believed that she was staying in a rather nice hotel. My mother died recently and the staff were respectful and supportive.
Dementia is a terrible and at times distressing illness for the person and their family but The Check House handle it in a caring and professional way.

Both of my parents were residents at The Check House. My father passed away in April 2022 and my mother in July 2022. Both passed away with dignity and amazing end-of-life care at The Check House. The staff at The Check House are amazing and were always attentive to both my parent's needs.

The staff at Check House were all outstanding, the care for mum was exceptional and the care for the families was second to none. Welcoming, warm and homely. Palliative care was amazing even down to pureed food in moulds which looked like proper food. The aftercare was so touching, flowers and candles
put around the room the morning that she passed and they made Mum look so cosy after she had. Amazing grace was playing on the speaker as she was carried out and nurses and carers lined the corridor. Check House made a very hard time in my life so much easier for me. I would put them at outstanding.

My husband has been a resident for over three and a half years. He has been so well cared for, not only physically, but emotionally. Always treated with respect, dignity and warmth. I have always felt he was surrounded with affection and humour by the staff and I am so very grateful for that. Also,
the loving courtesy shown to myself and my family.

My dad has been a resident for three and a half years. From the moment he was welcomed into the community at The Check House we have not had a moments worry about the standard of care he was receiving. From the management to the maintenance staff everyone is part of the caring team/family, and this
shows in the atmosphere at The Check House. At times I was in the home 24hrs a day and saw that the good care was consistent, night and day. Once dad became bed-bound, enrichment was bought to his room, and excellent, respectful and appropriate care continued behind closed doors. The staff became like an extended family to us. We are so grateful.

We moved our Mum here after a terrible experience at a previous home. We were so nervous as she has advanced dementia and Parkinson's and we were worried about how the move would impact on her wellbeing. However, it has been an absolute dream, to see her looking so well cared for, she is clean, happy,
and stimulated. Activities on all the time. The carers are really great, you can see they really want to make a difference and understand the challenges of supporting someone with dementia. The setting is amazing and I love that there are lots of different areas for Mum to sit in as she is immobile, all very stimulating and a very happy and loving atmosphere when you visit.

My wife lived with vascular dementia and resided in the Check House from January to March 2022. During her stay, she was treated with kindness, compassion and respect. All members of staff were very helpful and understanding, during this difficult time. Sadly, my wife passed away during her stay at

My father was at The Check House for over four years. During that time, he was treated with dignity and respect. As a family, we were welcome and supported. Covid was a very difficult time for all, but we were kept informed regularly of Dad's health and wellbeing. His last few weeks were very special,
and we cannot thank the staff enough for their care and support. Thank you.

Mum was admitted to the Check House for the last 2 years of her life and I'm glad it was where I chose for her - it was great! The food is lovely (I ate there a few times) and was of high quality without being fussy, using fresh local ingredients, wherever possible. The staff were helpful and caring,
always treating Mum with compassion and respect. The views and garden are lovely, with residents able to enjoy the terrace and its sea views in the warmer weather. The staff/resident ratio was good, with an interesting and varied programme of activities, including sightseeing trips in the care home van, during the pandemic to tour the countryside and take in sea views. Safety protocols re Covid-19 were well organised and the nursing staff were on the ball with ailments. Mum was particularly fond of the "Daily Sparkle" colour pamphlet produced daily for the residents. A WhatsApp group keeps relatives up to date with pictures of activities etc. Video calls were available via Skype.

My husband was diagnosed with complex needs and challenging behaviour. He was always cared for with warmth and compassion and even at his most difficult, he was always shown kindness and understanding. The staff are the most caring, dedicated people I have ever met and treated my husband with dignity,
respect and a lot of humour. They supported me when he was at the end of his life and I was able to stay with him. My husband was at Check House for six months and I would like to thank the manager and staff for creating a safe haven for him to live in.

The combination of an exceptional activities programme within this pet-friendly accommodation eased the transition to care-home living enormously, for my mother. The location with such wonderful grounds and views added to the environment. Of course, all of this would have been wasted if it was not supported
across the entire team working there. Professionalism, compassion, responsibility for the residents' wellbeing and needs shone through consistently. As my mother moved towards the last rung of her long ladder of life, it was enormously comforting to know that she was surrounded by people offering such love, care and comfort. With all the added difficulties of the Covid pandemic, nothing more could have been wished for.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.821)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.821) out of 10 for The Check House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.821 for The Check House is calculated as follows: ( (194 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 234 Ratings = 4.821
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Check House is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
