Both of my parents were residents at The Check House. My father passed away in April 2022 and my mother in July 2022. Both passed away with dignity and amazing end-of-life care at The Check House. The staff at The Check House are amazing and were always attentive to both my parent's needs.

The staff at Check House were all outstanding, the care for mum was exceptional and the care for the families was second to none. Welcoming, warm and homely. Palliative care was amazing even down to pureed food in moulds which looked like proper food. The aftercare was so touching, flowers and candles
put around the room the morning that she passed and they made Mum look so cosy after she had. Amazing grace was playing on the speaker as she was carried out and nurses and carers lined the corridor. Check House made a very hard time in my life so much easier for me. I would put them at outstanding.

My dad has been a resident for three and a half years. From the moment he was welcomed into the community at The Check House we have not had a moments worry about the standard of care he was receiving. From the management to the maintenance staff everyone is part of the caring team/family, and this
shows in the atmosphere at The Check House. At times I was in the home 24hrs a day and saw that the good care was consistent, night and day. Once dad became bed-bound, enrichment was bought to his room, and excellent, respectful and appropriate care continued behind closed doors. The staff became like an extended family to us. We are so grateful.

We moved our Mum here after a terrible experience at a previous home. We were so nervous as she has advanced dementia and Parkinson's and we were worried about how the move would impact on her wellbeing. However, it has been an absolute dream, to see her looking so well cared for, she is clean, happy,
and stimulated. Activities on all the time. The carers are really great, you can see they really want to make a difference and understand the challenges of supporting someone with dementia. The setting is amazing and I love that there are lots of different areas for Mum to sit in as she is immobile, all very stimulating and a very happy and loving atmosphere when you visit.

Mum was admitted to the Check House for the last 2 years of her life and I'm glad it was where I chose for her - it was great! The food is lovely (I ate there a few times) and was of high quality without being fussy, using fresh local ingredients, wherever possible. The staff were helpful and caring,
always treating Mum with compassion and respect. The views and garden are lovely, with residents able to enjoy the terrace and its sea views in the warmer weather. The staff/resident ratio was good, with an interesting and varied programme of activities, including sightseeing trips in the care home van, during the pandemic to tour the countryside and take in sea views. Safety protocols re Covid-19 were well organised and the nursing staff were on the ball with ailments. Mum was particularly fond of the "Daily Sparkle" colour pamphlet produced daily for the residents. A WhatsApp group keeps relatives up to date with pictures of activities etc. Video calls were available via Skype.

My husband was diagnosed with complex needs and challenging behaviour. He was always cared for with warmth and compassion and even at his most difficult, he was always shown kindness and understanding. The staff are the most caring, dedicated people I have ever met and treated my husband with dignity,
respect and a lot of humour. They supported me when he was at the end of his life and I was able to stay with him. My husband was at Check House for six months and I would like to thank the manager and staff for creating a safe haven for him to live in.

The combination of an exceptional activities programme within this pet-friendly accommodation eased the transition to care-home living enormously, for my mother. The location with such wonderful grounds and views added to the environment. Of course, all of this would have been wasted if it was not supported
across the entire team working there. Professionalism, compassion, responsibility for the residents' wellbeing and needs shone through consistently. As my mother moved towards the last rung of her long ladder of life, it was enormously comforting to know that she was surrounded by people offering such love, care and comfort. With all the added difficulties of the Covid pandemic, nothing more could have been wished for.

We had to make the difficult decision to admit Dad to residential care after years of caring for him at home, it was hard for us but the professional, caring, and compassionate staff worked hard to make it easier for us and for Dad. Dad spent only three months at Check House and all of the staff at
every level went above and beyond to care for him and he was treated with dignity and respect at all times. Dad loved the food at Check House, he loved the sunny terrace with the incredible sea view which he was able to access independently and he particularly loved the frequent trips out in the minibus or the car, he had always been active and loved being able to get out and about and to see familiar places right up until two days before he died. We will be eternally grateful that we found Check House, Dad was beautifully cared for and we were incredibly supported through his last 36 hours as we sat with him.

Check House is exceptional. The managers, nurses, support workers, kitchen and maintenance staff, administrators, cleaners and laundry staff are the most compassionate, considerate, empathetic and caring people that we have ever met. Dad presented with quite challenging behaviour, which was always handled
effortlessly and with a wonderful sense of humour. He was treated with dignity, courtesy and respect at all times. During Dad’s final days, staff went above and beyond to not only take the best possible care of him, but to also support the whole family. The dedicated staff team is probably one of the most loyal and mutually supportive that I have ever met and even when the home was locked down to visitors, we never worried as we knew that Dad was safe and well cared for. We consider ourselves very fortunate that Dad was able to spend the last few years of his life in such a wonderful place, surrounded by amazing people who had grown very fond of him and cared for him as they would their own family.

My mother spent what turned out to be the final four months of her life at The Check House, from February 2021. It was an enormous relief for us to know that she was safe and looked after and in beautiful surroundings. Her room overlooked the sea and she was able to walk out into the garden with her
stick and a carer to admire the stunning coastline and beautiful flowers. The food was delicious. Her bedroom and bathroom were kept spotlessly clean. Carers made time to get to know her and she took part in a range of activities, from tea tasting and fossil identifying in her room, to playing skittles in the corridor, to hunting for chocolate eggs out on the terrace. When she became terminally ill, she was able to remain at The Check House and the nursing care was excellent. For the final weeks, my brother and I were made so welcome there, and the care Mum (and we) received was always professional and kind. Thank you.

Mum went to Check House from hospital to spend her last days. All the staff were unfailing kind and compassionate. I was allowed Covid-safe access to Mum and spent more time with her in her last few days than the whole of 2020 lockdown. He heath was managed sensitively and lovingly. I can't praise Check
House too highly.

Karen Real

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2000

Karen is the Registered Manager at The Check House Nursing Home and she has been with the Group for over 20 years. She was a Senior Care Assistant for many years, becoming a Deputy Manager in 2015 and then Registered Manager in 2018.


Karen is committed to leading Check House in the provision of the highest possible standards of care.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Joined: 2009

Heather McCrea has been a Deputy Manager at The Check House Nursing Home since 2019. Heather joined Check House as a Care Assistant in 2009, becoming a Senior Care Assistant and then a Deputy Manager.


Heather is dedicated and passionate, playing a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the Home.

Marivic Pamaylaon is Medication Coordinator at The Check House Care Home, having joined back in 2005. Marivic joined as a Care Assistant was promoted to Medication Coordinator in 2020. Marivic oversees the safe management of medication, working closely with the Lead Nurse to deliver outstanding care for all of our residents.
