We had to make the difficult decision to admit Dad to residential care after years of caring for him at home, it was hard for us but the professional, caring, and compassionate staff worked hard to make it easier for us and for Dad. Dad spent only three months at Check House and all of the staff at
every level went above and beyond to care for him and he was treated with dignity and respect at all times. Dad loved the food at Check House, he loved the sunny terrace with the incredible sea view which he was able to access independently and he particularly loved the frequent trips out in the minibus or the car, he had always been active and loved being able to get out and about and to see familiar places right up until two days before he died. We will be eternally grateful that we found Check House, Dad was beautifully cared for and we were incredibly supported through his last 36 hours as we sat with him.

Check House is exceptional. The managers, nurses, support workers, kitchen and maintenance staff, administrators, cleaners and laundry staff are the most compassionate, considerate, empathetic and caring people that we have ever met. Dad presented with quite challenging behaviour, which was always handled
effortlessly and with a wonderful sense of humour. He was treated with dignity, courtesy and respect at all times. During Dad’s final days, staff went above and beyond to not only take the best possible care of him, but to also support the whole family. The dedicated staff team is probably one of the most loyal and mutually supportive that I have ever met and even when the home was locked down to visitors, we never worried as we knew that Dad was safe and well cared for. We consider ourselves very fortunate that Dad was able to spend the last few years of his life in such a wonderful place, surrounded by amazing people who had grown very fond of him and cared for him as they would their own family.

My mother spent what turned out to be the final four months of her life at The Check House, from February 2021. It was an enormous relief for us to know that she was safe and looked after and in beautiful surroundings. Her room overlooked the sea and she was able to walk out into the garden with her
stick and a carer to admire the stunning coastline and beautiful flowers. The food was delicious. Her bedroom and bathroom were kept spotlessly clean. Carers made time to get to know her and she took part in a range of activities, from tea tasting and fossil identifying in her room, to playing skittles in the corridor, to hunting for chocolate eggs out on the terrace. When she became terminally ill, she was able to remain at The Check House and the nursing care was excellent. For the final weeks, my brother and I were made so welcome there, and the care Mum (and we) received was always professional and kind. Thank you.

The Check House have cared for my mother extremely well. They have kept in contact with us to let us know if there were any changes in my mother's condition. My mother's room had lovely views across the lawn to the sea. She always told us how kind the staff were to her.

Mum went to Check House from hospital to spend her last days. All the staff were unfailing kind and compassionate. I was allowed Covid-safe access to Mum and spent more time with her in her last few days than the whole of 2020 lockdown. He heath was managed sensitively and lovingly. I can't praise Check
House too highly.

My widowed father moved to Check House after becoming more anxious and lonely at home. He was apprehensive but entered a bright, spacious environment where lots of activities, kindness, respect, and friendship. The staff were open and welcoming and always kept us well informed. The medical attention
was excellent. After three years my nearly 94-year-old father died. We weren't there but we know he was amongst friends. We never regretted moving him there.

The Check House is an amazing care home. My dad has been treated with the utmost respect and dignity from his first admission a year ago until his current end of life care. All of the staff are friendly and engage fully with the residents. There are always interesting and varied activities. The food
is excellent. My dad has felt safe and happy here. A wonderful place to live and visit.

During the four years my uncle was resident at Check House, I was impressed by the professionalism of all staff and the high quality of care provided. Sometimes, difficult behaviour was handled with ease.
Living 250 miles away, it was important to me to be confident that all was well between my 3
times a year visits. This confidence was absolute.
I think it would be hard to find a better run home anywhere in the country.

As dad's health declined we knew he needed help with his daily needs. We live in America and could only see him a few times a year.
The Check House took good care of him during his last year. They were kind and caring and we felt very comfortable with him in their care.
His private room was comfortable
and appropriate for him.
The level of communication with me was quite adequate. I found the entire team very helpful and informative. No hesitation in recommending The Check House.

My mother stayed at Check House for a week after having a major operation. The care and attention was excellent provided by professional and careers. Nothing was too to much trouble. Food was of excellent quality and nicely served. My mother was well cared for and would stay again. The facilities were
of an excellent standard and her room was cleaned daily. She would definitely be happy to stay again.

My mother lived at Check House for 7 years and, immediately after arriving, enjoyed better general health. She enjoyed taking part in the activities and trips. Latterly she became less able and confined to a chair and requiring help to get up. There was always plenty of staff available and they went
out of their way to involve Mum (who was hard of hearing). We were kept informed of health concerns and the family was able to openly discuss the care plan with the management. When it became obvious that Mum was dying, the family were able to be with her, and the night team were so kind to Mum and ourselves. They could not do enough to keep us comfortable and even provided a couple of beds to get some sleep. Mum died in a good place, without distress, being looked after by a terrific team. The family is so grateful.

After a long stay in hospital after breaking her legs, my mum was sent home but needed rehabilitation. She went to The Check House and they were amazing. All the staff were kind, caring and their support and encouragement meant she gained weight, improved her general health and found her zest for life
again. Her level of mobility improved which allowed her to return home. We were always warmly welcomed and mum was sad to leave. Mum's care and support was excellent. Thank you.

My sister was discharged from hospital on 31/12/18 but could not walk up the stairs or manage, so we looked at The Check House and booked her in on 3rd January 2019. She left on 7th May 2019. They have helped her to get back on her feet. She has put all the weight she lost in the hospital. They are
so caring and could not have done more.

The Check House is an "Outstanding" (CQC) Care and Nursing home who specialise in dementia. The culture of the home is open, friendly, warm, welcoming, organised and safe.
The manager and all staff are kind and compassionate towards everyone and have warm, caring relationships with them.
The care
provided is personalised by staff who are highly skilled, know the patients well, their lives, what matters to them and care for them as individuals.
Meals are of superb quality and superior to those one would find in many expensive restaurants and hotels.
The Check House has a variety of social activities and encourage personal interests.
Even though many residents are cognitively impaired, they are supported to express their views and make their own decisions about all aspects of their life and what is important to them.
As a relative who lives quite a distance away, all these factors and more besides I know my father is safe, well cared for, and content within this living environment.

Alzheimer's had already set in when my Aunt moved to The Check House, almost seven years ago. She had a beautiful room with glorious views over the gardens to the sea beyond. She was cared for incredibly well throughout her stay. Her progressive decline meant she needed more and more care which was
always given with dignity and a smile. She died a week ago, with her last days being peaceful and calm as she gently slipped away. This has been an amazing experience for us of care for the elderly.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.821)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.821) out of 10 for The Check House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.821 for The Check House is calculated as follows: ( (194 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 234 Ratings = 4.821
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Check House is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
