With an excellent reputation for the high standard of care, the long-serving team at Furzehatt are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents. Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, they also offer respite care breaks.

There are so many activities to enjoy, from baking, yoga, animal therapy and music sessions, to gardening, indoor bowls, church services, games, a book club and crafts.

The community is embraced into life in the home, with regular volunteers enjoying activities too, as well as local school children and college students. The home also has a piano for music sessions.

This summer the team completely revamped the gardens ‘Ground Force’ style! The makeover looks beautiful, with two water features, a tortoise garden, home to Malcolm and Murtle and a new herb and vegetable garden.

The residents have enjoyed growing their own herbs and vegetables, which the chef used in the kitchen, giving them such a sense of achievement.

And the home-cooked cuisine is a real highlight, with everything from roast dinners with all the trimmings to fish and chip Fridays, and home-baking for afternoon tea.

The team champion their residents to have a very active role to play in how their home is run. There are resident ambassadors, who do everything from interviewing potential staff, to showing new residents and their loved ones around their home.

There are so many homely spaces to relax with loved ones, who are welcome at any time, from welcoming lounges and quiet spaces, to a conservatory overlooking the gardens. There is also a hair salon, for regular appointments with a mobile hairdresser. And a chiropodist also visits monthly.

Furzehatt also has a private family and friends Facebook page, with regular photos, videos and updates on what the residents have been enjoying doing.

During the last few weeks of mums life, there was nothing that wasn’t done for her, she received excellent care. Up to the day she passed she was lifted and dressed, every day sat in her chair for my visits. Going back to bed when she tired. Every need she had was taken care of really efficiently.
Previous
to this she really enjoyed participating as best she could in all the activities. Even during the awful couple of years, we’ve all experienced she always seemed happy when we saw her and always said they are all lovely to me. The home is very much like our extended family and we appreciated and thought the world of the send-off at the home they gave her on the day we said goodbye to mum. As a family we highly recommend Furzehatt.

The room needs updating, the nursing staff are very caring. Management is slow on the uptake of things especially the individual needs of patients. Reception staff on one occasion were very rude, other staff are excellent with not only my mum but also the family. They make sure the needs of all of us
were being met and were very accommodating, realising it was a very emotional time for us. Particular staff were amazing to my mum but also my dad.

Whilst my mother was in the last days of her life, she was treated with so much care, dignity and love. All of the staff were amazing and supportive of us as a family. We could not have wished for a better home for our Mum. We were made to feel welcome any time of the day in her final days. Would highly
recommend this wonderful team of people at Furzehatt.

The care provided for my sister over the past two years has been excellent. She had dementia and has been treated so kindly, passing away on 19/1/22. We have been treated with help and kindness since she passed.

I was really impressed and so grateful for the high-quality care that was given to my dear Auntie throughout the seven months she spent in the Furzehatt Residential and Nursing Home. All of the staff were extremely professional and so helpful during the Covid restriction times. They enabled me to phone
and speak to the nurses for regular updates on how she was doing. The nurses would also take the Home’s mobile phone and hold it for me to speak to her directly. It was heartbreaking not being able to go inside and hug my auntie but I was especially indebted to the lovely nurse, who showed such personal loving care and provided my closest link to her. Later, I was able to make two face-to-face (masked) visits and found the premises to be clean; the meals provided to be of good quality; and all of the staff that I saw to be efficient, friendly, caring and helpful. I would not hesitate in highly recommending this wonderful Nursing Home.

Mum was never helped out of bed. In two months she spent just two hours out of bed dressed. She spent many hours laying in her own urine. The home relies on agency staff each and every day to provide the bare minimum of staffing levels. Her bedroom door didn't close when the fire alarm went off. Dirty
cups and cutlery given to Mum to use. The cleaning is very poor. The homes lift was out of service, broken, for the whole of the two months Mum was there. The nurse never attended when we asked her to as Mum was unwell. The toilet in Mum's room was used as a cupboard. Her dustbin was never emptied. The manager is very dismissive and unhelpful and all in all the home is not fit for purpose. Couldn't get Mum out of that home quick enough. It's abysmal. A complaint has been lodged with CQC because we are so concerned with the residents who remain, and we have advised the council. I cannot go into too much detail on here but I have photographic evidence of a whole lot more.

The care and compassion shown to my father during his stay was exemplary and all the staff caring for him showed immense compassion which never waivered. He felt so cared for that he decided to stay until his end amongst those he trusted to look after him well. The staff supported the family right through
the difficult end and afterwards. The home could do with some physical updating but the care is above all key to a happy stay.

I must thank staff for providing mum with care and kindness during this terrible year. I must also thank them for their patience with me as I battled the NHS for funding for mum. Mum feels as secure as anyone with her complex needs can feel at Furzhatt.

Travelled from Surrey to visit my mother. First time at the care home and hadn’t seen her for 9 months. The booking procedure was straight forward as was the testing process at the home. Had a very enjoyable 30-minute visit in the conservatory. Staff who managed this visit were very helpful and friendly.
Mother was happy with the home and had settled in well. She kept commenting about the friendliness of the staff.
Due to visit again in a few weeks and waiting for more details from the home about their revised visit policy following 17 May. Hoping that more of my household can visit as I know she will be delighted to see her grandchildren.
I’ve graded many categories as satisfactory as this was my first visit and I only saw the conservatory and garden.

This year has been an exceptionally difficult year for everyone, but I don't know what either myself or my mother would have done without the incredible care, dedication and support of all the staff at Furzehatt. During a year when it hasn't been possible to have normal visits with our loved ones, the
staff have continually gone the extra mile to ensure that both the residents and their families were able to keep in touch by whatever means were possible. I can't thank them enough for everything.

Since my nan has been in Furzehatt, I have always been so welcomed by all the lovely staff who do an amazing job at looking after my nan - especially during what has been such a challenging time. Basically year from hell, especially Dad. A handful of the staff treated dad with dignity and respect. We will be eternally grateful, please follow your careers. Others rude, intimidating so commonplace. They do it in front of you on the portal. Every question or worry is taken as a criticism and over
time a wall proceeded to appear between them and us. Managers hide away in offices, never met them and senior staff give an answer or make a decision for fear of being shot down by them. In September we were so worried we contacted a social worker for help and advice. She went in, did a spot check, pointed out concerns. Been waiting since Sept for a zoom meeting with all parties to talk through dads best interests. Dad went into the hospital for 10 days in November. The day before discharge home wouldn't accept him back. Rather than face criticism, threw him out in the middle of a world pandemic. Shocking!

COVID has changed the way in which the care homes can be visited. Staff have gone above and beyond to make the safe garden and window visits available. When we were not able to visit I know my granny is in safe hands and is receiving excellent care. She is happy, healthy and part of a large second family.
Thank you to everyone, carers, management, cleaners, maintenance the cook and catering staff and the volunteers.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.409)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.409) out of 10 for Furzehatt Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 31 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.409 for Furzehatt Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (238 Excellents x 5) + (71 Goods x 4) + (28 Satisfactorys x 3) + (13 Poors x 2) + (12 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 362 Ratings = 4.409
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Furzehatt Residential and Nursing Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I work with my team to assist and care for our residents, to ensure their health and wellbeing needs are met. I have a very varied role and no day is ever the same.

I enjoy spending as much time with our residents as I possibly can and seeing them smile and enjoy their time with us, is so heart-warming.
