The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for The Aldbury is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 24 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Aldbury in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.746 for The Aldbury is calculated as follows: ( (221 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 287 Ratings = 4.746

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Aldbury is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 11 positive Reviews (55 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 20 Reviews ÷ 11 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Thank you for the care of my Mum over the years that she was a resident at The Aldbury. I could not have wished for anything better. Your care extended to all the relatives and we were always so welcomed and often enjoyed the entertainments with the residents. When it came to the end, everything was done with great dignity. I can't say thank you enough to all the team at The Aldbury.

The Aldbury is remarkable on every aspect needed by its residents. Regardless of expense. The care given could not be matched at home by family care. Even GP doctors are on tap 24/7. All aspects of required care are well taken care of. There are more staff than residents. Visitors are allowed 24/7 at any hour without notice. I visit my wife at The Aldbury every afternoon 24/7. I am very much part of my wife's daily routine. I would be very happy to personally be a resident.

There has been a real change in mum, from what she was like at home she seems less agitated and happy. The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful. Mum likes the carers and does focus on certain people.
Staff have also supported my dad.

The Aldbury has been outstanding from the moment we walked in. Both mum and the family have been shown care and compassion. Any questions have always been answered. The staff have been very supportive, both trained and carers. The carers have been brilliant all the way. The best interests of the resident have been the utmost importance.

There is an excellent quality of care at The Aldbury. The approach to care is proactive and tailored to the individual. I really like the four house groups and how the home is structured a big family and cosy environment. The food is excellent, my mother can be quite a fussy eater and the meals are tailored to her needs. The chef visited us when she arrived to discuss her needs.

The Aldbury care home is excellent for my husband. He has settled down much better than I thought he would all the staff are excellent with him. Accommodation and food are excellent. I can visit him anytime, and the staff look after and comfort him when I leave as it's upsetting for both of us. I wish he could come home, but The Aldbury care home is the next best home for him. I wish he could stay as he is happy and well-looked after.

Completely satisfied with everything except the very high fees of £5,500 per 4 weeks plus extras and except staffing. Sometimes there are staffing difficulties (not enough to cover mealtimes - some residents in rooms for meals (one to one) and some in day room) sometimes no staff in day room.

Elaine Farrer, Director of Operations at The Aldbury responded to this review on 13 Jul 2016:

"Thank you for your comments about the care at The Aldbury.
As an independent and family–run group determined to set the highest standards in all aspects of care for the elderly, our hard-working team will be particularly pleased to see that you are "completely satisfied with everything." The Aldbury is a dedicated care home for people living with dementia and, in some cases, a person with dementia may be entitled to receive NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding. I understand that in this case, CHC funding was initially granted but ended following a review. Please be assured that our fees reflect the cost of providing highly personalised care and are in line with our sector. Regarding staffing at The Aldbury, our staffing levels are acknowledged as being among the best in the care sector and there have been no staff shortages at the home. Thank you, again, for your review and please feel free to speak to the Home Manager if there are any other matters you wish to raise."

I would like to express my thanks to the care home manager of The Aldbury for all her help and support with CHC assessment for my mum. Not all care homes have that knowledge and support. Her time, skill and knowledge has helped immensely in this daunting task. Just knowing that someone else is with you along this path, to help fight for what you feel is right for your loved one is a comfort. No matter what the outcome is .... I have admiration for The Aldbury.

The Aldbury is always very clean and welcoming, We are always welcomed with smiles by all members of staff we see. My dad is always clean, well dressed and looking happy. He is always very well cared for, I have never felt cause to worry about my dad while in the care of the staff at The Aldbury. Dad is given meals and snacks regularly something I know he enjoys. On a side note my young children have always been made to feel completely welcome and are free to come and see their granddad whenever they like. The staff all make a fuss of them and The Aldbury put on family activities which can involve both my dad and his grandchildren.

My mother moved into The Aldbury Care Home for respite care for four weeks in an emergency situation when my father was admitted to hospital with a terminal illness. The family were extremely stressed at the time.
My mother had never even considered living in a care home. The staff were helpful and supportive, arranging urgent assessment and admission to meet our needs. They helped us deal with all the distress associated with admitting an elderly relative in a gentle, caring and friendly way.
Everyone from the manager down, went out of their way to make us feel 'at home' and we felt welcome to visit unannounced, at any time of the day or night. It was a very positive experience.

My mum is well cared for. She enjoys the activities which are very stimulating. She likes joining in with things but finds the giant scrabble too difficult to follow. She enjoys the food, she especially likes the trips out and even gave swimming a try recently but found the water a bit cold. She is generally happy and contented.

Have just been to visit my mum with my father and daughter - dad was able to have his hair cut which was lovely for him to be fussed over. Mum was in bed but was clean and had obviously had her hair brushed and looked comfortable and when mentioned she needed changing it was done instantly.
Everyone is always really friendly and helpful to all of us and nothing is too much trouble for them. They make a fuss of my dad too, which he loves!!!

My husband has severe dementia, he attends day care 3 times a week, he is well looked after, fed and given drinks. The staff also bath him each day as I am unable to now. The staff try to include him in activities but this is normally unsuccessful as he in uncooperative. he goes to The Aldbury willingly each time and appears to enjoy it very much, he does not have the ability to talk now so I have to go by his moods. I/we visit mum at least once a week and have been very impressed by the high standard of care. I have witnessed several specific incidents where carers have been very, very quick to attend to any disruptive behaviours. There is a lot of care to preserve the dignity of the residents and generally good communication to let relatives know if there are any particular incidents or concerns.

My father spent his final weeks of his life at The Aldbury, as a family it was a very significant step moving into residential care for both him and my mother, however it was made as easy as possible with the help and support from staff. My father had no verbal communication, however every effort was made to accommodate this including a staff member devising a simple communication tool. Initially there were a few little difficulties but these were resolved with discussion with the family to seek a way forward in a constructive and sympathetic way. My father spent his last birthday and Christmas at the home, we valued very much the opportunity to enjoy a private family birthday meal in the coffee shop a treasured memory for us all and his final day we cannot thank staff enough for their compassionate support and the peaceful environment provided for him to slip away.

My dad was a resident at The Aldbury from November 2013 to October 2015 when he passed away. Dad was admitted initially as an urgent case to provide respite care for my mum, we hadn't had time to do any research, but it quickly became clear we had got the best home possible for dad. All the carers are completely dedicated and provide a personal service, bespoke to the individuals, caring and compassionate. This applies to everyone at the home, managers, nurses, cooks, cleaners and receptionists, nothing is too much trouble. Every resident is treated as an individual. Similar care was displayed to my mum when she visited. Dad was very content and happy and we are very grateful he spent his last months here.

My brother-in-law moved to The Aldbury in July after being in two other nursing homes. From the start the dedication of all the staff was clearly evident and he settled in very quickly. Nothing is too much trouble, each person is treated as an individual and their needs are met with respect ensuring their dignity at all times. My brother-in-law can be difficult at times but all the staff deal with this in a very professional way, diffusing the situation by showing him they care and making him feel special. At the other homes he stayed in his room for most of the time but since being at The Aldbury he asks to go in the lounge with the other residents and has been out on minibus trips. The activities each day are excellent and we are encouraged to join in when visiting.
Before when leaving him we used to worry about the care he was receiving but since moving him to The Aldbury we are quite happy to go home knowing that he is well cared for, clean and as happy as his illness will let him be. We have got to know some of the other residents and considering the nature of dementia there is always a happy atmosphere in the home what ever time of day we visit.
On a personal note I would like to thank the staff for the support given to me and my husband. We are always made to feel welcome from the time we sign in at the reception desk to the time we leave and we would recommend this home to anyone.
