My father has been a resident of the dementia nursing care side of West Abbey Care Home for four months. Having been to two previous very good care homes, they had high standards to meet. I am very happy to report that we have been very impressed. The home is immaculately clean at all times. The staff
are always patient, caring and personable, both with us visiting and the residents. My dad has very limited verbal communication now, but all the staff seem to have learnt a lot about my father's interests and his life prior. They genuinely know and care about him. He moved here due to his declining health/ advancing dementia, and they have kept up with his growing needs very well indeed. We visit regularly, and I confidently recommend the home.

The unit is beautifully cleaned and everything looks well cared for. Dad is well-presented and looks happy. The staff are kind and professional. We are so grateful for Dad's care.

Both my Mum and Dad had their last days in West Abbey Care Home. I can't thank the staff enough for their kindness, love and care which was excellent. Not only is the facility so clean but everyone showed genuine heart and care in their work. I'm so grateful. Both my parents passed peacefully and comfortably
into their eternal homes.

My father who has Alzheimer's recently moved into West Abbey Care Home when my mother was suddenly hospitalised, 2 weeks later they managed to accommodate her too. Sadly this was only for 6 days. During that time the staff have dealt with them both with sensitivity and kindness, looking after them in
any way possible to support them both. They're continuing to support Dad as he gives and tries to understand what has happened now. I'm so grateful to the whole team for their gentle professionalism and kindness.

My dad stayed at West Abbey for two weeks to allow hubby and I to have a holiday. Every single carer, cleaner and admin worker were fab, so patient! I emailed frequently and they always replied with updates on Dad and his daily activities. We were very happy with my dad's care.

Mum and dad came to Barchester West Abbey Care Home in 2015. They were both in the Lyde unit which was always warm and welcoming from the moment you walked through the door in reception to the senior nurse and all the carers on the unit. West Abbey offered to make a double room for them. This was a
huge factor in continuing to give them the best quality of life possible. Dad died two years later. They all knew us by name and they too were warm and compassionate with a touch on the arm, sometimes a hug. Dementia care is extremely demanding of the carers: our experience of them on Lyde was superb and we appreciated their skills and compassion increasingly as we got to know them over the months and years.
Mum was moved upstairs to the main unit for her end-of-life care, which was warm and appropriate; she died in September 2022. The rooms and attached toilets were always clean and tidy. Communication has always been first-rate. The manager, receptionist and administrator have always been available. The food has always been good.

Dad has been made very comfortable in "memory lane" with an air mattress, and special attention paid to a necrotic patch on his heel. Developed at another care home, this is now responding to good nursing, and new skin is growing. Staff are wonderful, very accommodating, attentive etc.

My stay was for respite purposes. The care and support I received from the team were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, with a willingness to please. There were a few shortfalls regarding the accommodation, which took a while to put right. However, this did not spoil my stay. I would certainly

We came to the care home for a week's respite. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the care was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. They went above and beyond what was required of them. Although we didn't get involved in the activities, we could see there was

My mother is a recent resident of the home and whilst she is still not joining in as I would like, she is in her words "very content". For my part, she is clean, tidy, well-fed and in a comfortable environment. The staff without fail are kind and gentle. Her room looks out to the garden which pleases
my mum a great deal. The precautions taken against covid are excellent and nothing has been too much trouble.

I would sadly not recommend West Abbey. The staff do care, they try their best but inadequate training and awareness of the medical needs of my mother-in-law have been below what I would expect of a care home working with patients/clients, with typical needs of dementia patients. They just seem to get
something wrong every time we visit. It is rarely a positive experience, whether it be clean hair and hands, (simple stuff), good seating and positioning, recording accurately conversations about medical intervention, or making visiting easy and hassle-free. Disappointing and feeling guilty is how we feel.

I find the activities excellent. Staff are so caring and will do their level best to look after your needs. From my home I have been able to bring furniture and books, ornaments also plants from the garden. All in all a wonderful place to stay to end your life.

Mum enjoys her life at West Abbey. She feels safe and well looked after. From the moment you meet the staff at the front desk, you feel welcome. The carers are very hardworking and friendly. The activities team are brilliant. The food is very good and the kitchen team are all very friendly and approachable.

My name is Gordon and I am the General Manager at the lovely West Abbey Care Home


I have been a qualified nurse since 1997 and have worked and managed in both the Health Service, and private health care.


I passionately believe that a smile can change a day, and seeing our residents and relatives smile and laugh is my driving force. Making every day the best day for residents and relatives is incredibly important to me.


I count myself very lucky indeed to lead a team at West Abbey who I know are equally as committed to making a difference to the lives of those who live with us as I am, and I am proud to have them all on the journey with me.


When I am not at West Abbey; I am probably to be found working on one of my allotments, where I grow a multitude of flowers and vegetables, if I am not there, I will be maintaining my classic car and getting oily, much to the annoyance of my wife Claire.


I live not far away, in Dorset and I feel blessed to be living in the beautiful West Country and able to work at such a fantastic facility as West Abbey.

Hi, I'm Kevin. I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1987, before moving to Canada to work for 2 years. Upon returning I worked in the NHS for several years before starting my own practice.


I specialise in musculoskeletal conditions and care of the elderly and I have taught courses to physiotherapists all over the world.


I have been working with West Abbey since 2006.
