I came to visit my relative and was shouted at by one of your male nurses in a very unprofessional manner. He said have you seen your relative to which I replied yes, he replied drink your tea, leave it at that and go. He then returned to the visitors in seconds and shouted "I will give you 30 seconds", and then 30 seconds for a patient who was end of life. Disgusting and very unprofessional.

I cannot recommend this care home enough. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the staff who showed genuine care and compassion for the residents. The facilities are brilliant, clean and beautifully maintained. The residents are all well taken care of and seem genuinely happy and content. The activities and programs offered are diverse and engaging, keeping everyone active and stimulated. The meals are delicious and nutritious and there are always options available for any dietary needs. Overall, this care home goes above and beyond in every aspect, providing a safe and nurturing environment for its residents. Five stars all the way!

Our daughter has been a resident at Barchester West Abbey Care Home for twenty-five years. During that time, we have been more than happy with every aspect of the home. The staff (from cleaners, carers, nurses - everyone!) are friendly, caring and welcoming and make us feel like we are family. A wonderful home.

Wow, where do I start? Recently had a relative stay on a short stay and from the moment I made contact with the team I felt at ease and knew I would be confident in the care that my mother needed. The management team were always available to answer any questions I had and added great reassurance throughout our stay. The manager and her team were absolutely wonderful as were all the staff really. From the kitchen staff to the care team everyone was friendly, smiley and happy to assist and made a huge impact on our family during our stay. A team who are an absolute credit to the care industry. Well done West Abbey, Mum will be back!

I was worried about bringing in my husband, who has vascular dementia, to a home for the first time but my mind was soon put to rest when I watched him a few days later. Happily engaging with other staff members and residents and joining in the activity.

There is such a wonderful, warm atmosphere there. I would have no hesitation in using this home again.

Mum was admitted at short notice, so had no time to get used to the idea of moving into a care home. She was warmly welcomed on arrival nine weeks ago and has settled in really well. The staff are friendly, caring professionals and she is treated with respect at all times. Despite having dementia Mum has become more confident in herself and is engaging in a full range of activities. She has made friends and is much more like her old self. Smiling all the time. Thank you for making this difficult transition from home to care home, a smooth and stress-free process for both of us.

When I entered Barchester West Abbey Care Home for the first time I immediately had a good feeling about it. The home was spacious, clean and well presented. All the staff (including non-medical staff) were friendly and professional. My brother was a difficult resident to care for, partly because he had complex needs (some of which had arisen because of inadequate care in a previous home and from NHS hospitals in a different area, not connected with Barchester or Yeovil). He eventually needed palliative care.
A huge thank you to West Abbey for admitting my brother who was in an appalling condition. During his final 2 months, West Abbey provided high quality care and kindness and very good food. We were also impressed by the range of weekly activities for those who chose to participate.

We are also grateful to West Abbey for the way they maintained close communication with us, his family, and for the sensitivity they demonstrated in managing the whole experience.

My father has been a resident of the dementia nursing care side of West Abbey Care Home for four months. Having been to two previous very good care homes, they had high standards to meet. I am very happy to report that we have been very impressed. The home is immaculately clean at all times. The staff are always patient, caring and personable, both with us visiting and the residents. My dad has very limited verbal communication now, but all the staff seem to have learnt a lot about my father's interests and his life prior. They genuinely know and care about him. He moved here due to his declining health/ advancing dementia, and they have kept up with his growing needs very well indeed. We visit regularly, and I confidently recommend the home.

My father who has Alzheimer's recently moved into West Abbey Care Home when my mother was suddenly hospitalised, 2 weeks later they managed to accommodate her too. Sadly this was only for 6 days. During that time the staff have dealt with them both with sensitivity and kindness, looking after them in any way possible to support them both. They're continuing to support Dad as he gives and tries to understand what has happened now. I'm so grateful to the whole team for their gentle professionalism and kindness.

Mum and dad came to Barchester West Abbey Care Home in 2015. They were both in the Lyde unit which was always warm and welcoming from the moment you walked through the door in reception to the senior nurse and all the carers on the unit. West Abbey offered to make a double room for them. This was a huge factor in continuing to give them the best quality of life possible. Dad died two years later. They all knew us by name and they too were warm and compassionate with a touch on the arm, sometimes a hug. Dementia care is extremely demanding of the carers: our experience of them on Lyde was superb and we appreciated their skills and compassion increasingly as we got to know them over the months and years.

Mum was moved upstairs to the main unit for her end-of-life care, which was warm and appropriate; she died in September 2022. The rooms and attached toilets were always clean and tidy. Communication has always been first-rate. The manager, receptionist and administrator have always been available. The food has always been good.

Dad has been made very comfortable in "memory lane" with an air mattress, and special attention paid to a necrotic patch on his heel. Developed at another care home, this is now responding to good nursing, and new skin is growing. Staff are wonderful, very accommodating, attentive etc.

Hello, my name is David, and I am the General Manager at West Abbey.

I have over 12 years’ experience in the care sector in England, working across both nursing and residential settings, with a strong focus on dementia care, including complex dementia and high-acuity nursing needs. Throughout my career, I have developed a clear focus on quality, team development, and creating positive and person-centred environments. One of my key focuses is creating a real sense of community within the home, where people feel valued, respected, and truly at home.
